Iphone 4s Battery life WORSE with upgrade. Anyone else seeing same?

I upgraded my new iPhone 4s today and now my battery life is so much worse. I can literally watch it drain by the minute. Is anyone else experiencing this?

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.0.1

Jason,

I believe the email fix also worked on the iPhone 4.

And it was not just MS Exchange it was also email related to whatever Apple called their online service before it became iCloud.

I also the way I did the DFU, restore as new and then manually add back my email ends up being the same thing you did with a few more steps... and we all know that MORE is better, well at least it takes longer. Ugh!

Mrs Shakey,

Did you do a retore from a backup after setting up as new? If so that maybe a problem. I have read several post that suggest not doing a restore from a backup because you may drag back the problem buried in the "Backup".

I restored as a new phone and then manually re-entered things like my email and regained my apps by doing a sync.

As Jason posted he just deleted his MS exchange email accounts and manually re-entered them and fixed the problem. I remember several people doing nothing but that with success even back on the iPhone 4.

Anyway I hope you did a restore from a back up so I can suggest you do the restore as new and manually enter back your email and personal settings. If you didn't do a restore from a backup after a restore as new... well sound like Genious Bar time. Ouch!

PS - I sure wouldn't any Over The Air restores or updates. That procedure is far too new for my taste.

Turned off PUSH of my Outlook Exchange email and put to Manual and that has "fixed" the excessive battery drain issue, now only lost 3% of battery in 1.5 hours and usage minutes much more consistent with the time I am actually doing something with the phone.

From release date of 4S (October 14th) to November 11, using OS 5.0 I had the same email accounts being served from the same servers and no where near these battery issues. Pre 5.0.1 I could go all day, email, text, take calls and get home 14 to 15 hours later and still hae 50% battery life, but plug in overnight to avoid running out the next day. The only other perhaps notable point that that I also need to keep "MobileIron" app running under my company policy to access the exchnage servers; That was also installed and configured the same pre 5.0.1, maybe it is not compatible with the updates.

Hopefully this can get sorted - as push of work email is really what I need, especially when clients (who pay my bills so I can pay for this phone) need to reach me.

Lenvo65,

You might want to try what "Jason" said fixed his problem with Battery consumption. He removed MS Exchange and re-installed it - his problem solved.

Again I think a restore as a "New Phone" accomplishes re-installing your email or you can just do the email like "Jason" (in an earlier post) did.

Turning of push is most likely just a cover-up for the real problem which appears to be something in the mail applications code getting hit during the update process. Like I said previously this mail/battery problem was very common in the iPhone -4- era also.

Remember push is the code that gives you an advantage over polling because the phone doesn't have to do anything while waiting for a push message to come in, that is, not anything it wouldn't normally be doing while waiting for an incoming phone call. That said if the code has taken a hit during the update turning push off may stop the code that is behaving in an "Out of Control" manner.

If this all sounds fishy to you, please do a search for this problem on the iPhone -4- and you will find the EXACT same Battery/Email relationship and cures which were the "Re-intall of your email account" and/or restore "As a New Phone". To the best of my recollection either one and sometimes both would invariably fix the problem.

"Just saying" ;-) I would try what "Jason" did and delete MS Messenger and re-install it if you don't feel like going full out restore as "New".

I suggest this to you only because when this happened with the iPhone -4- Apple never came out with a fix, at least not in public. But thanks to some of these forums the cure became widely known.

PS - Don't quote me but I also seem to remember that apple support would tell you the same "Delete and Re-Install your email thing (in the iPhone -4- era) over the phone. Besides if you wait for Apple to come to you with a solution you may have to use your phone in "Cripple" mode for some time to come.

This whole "restore as new" fix has reached urban legend status. Almost equal in popularity to the "clean install" option in Mac OS X whereby you wipe your system clean and start from scratch instead of simply updating your OS. I believe both options are great at getting you to lose your data while neither does anything to resolve the issues. Anyone contemplating this option should remember that photos stored locally on your iPhone and not backed up to iPhoto or Photo Stream will not be available for syncing after you "restore as new". If you have any photos that you want to save, sync or back them up before setting up as new. It's an easy step to forget.

Nov 14, 2011 4:55 PM in response to AZREOspecialist

AZERO,

Are you saying that neither the "Mail" or "As New" did not work for you?

And yes I and others should warn about the potential to wipe out "Photos" if you forget to back them up. Actually I am not sure what happens with MS Exchange mail either. Hey Jason, come to my rescue here.

And yes I have lost those sort of things while re-installing an OS, in my case Windows. But IMHO sometimes when an OS gets screwed up it if nothing else it is a whole lot faster than trying to figure out what in the OS has become corrupted if doable at all. Beside, tell me something that is better than a clean install of a year or two old OS and don't say sex even if it might be true.

In reference to MS Exchange, I didn't lose anything, since it runs off a county server and all the contacts were on the server. The one's I added, I had done from a desktop, so they were still there also. Any contacts that are in your contact list on the phone will still be there also. Just to be on the safe side, I did delete all the email accounts, including icloud, then added them just by going back into "settings", "mail.." "add account". I have the regular iphone 4, so I don't know if its exactly the same for 4s or not.

Nov 14, 2011 9:43 PM in response to debrafrommclean

I contacted Apple to report directly to them that I believed that the drain on the battery is an ActiveSync issue. During the week day the battery just clicks down as e-mail flows in and out of my e-mail box but on the weekend when mail flow slows down so does the battery drain. True on iPhone 4, 4S, 3S. It is a real problem and 5.01 did not even come close to resolving the problem and cripling the phone to solve the problem is not a sutable fix.
