Battery life/iOS 5.0.1

Am I the only person who downloaded 5.0.1 and received a brand new timer in the upper right hand corner of my device? It went down two percent just while typing this.

iPhone 4, Windows XP

What??? Well within Apple specs? 8 hours talk time or 200 hours stand-by. 200 hours is over 8 days!!!

Honestly, my IPhone 3 or 4 would never have gotten that on their best day, but they both lasted 3-4 times as long as the Iphone 4s.

But I'm getting less than 8 hours checking email a couple of times and stock prices once or twice--no calls. I unplugged the phone this morning at 6:30AM and by 1:30pm battery was down to 15%. This leads me to believe that the phone is using the battery in stand-by similiar to the rate of a phone call.

Look, I bought this phone for its features, and for the only fix to be "don't use some of the features" is just ridiculous.

Apple promised me 200+ hours of standby, and there was no fine print saying anything like "200+ hours of standby is only for users who don't use all of the features of this phone."

That's like saying we get X amount of time when using the camera, except you can't record anything with the camera or else you get Y amount of hours.

I want to be able to use my phone like I used my iPhone 4, and have the same awesome battery life.

No one here has had any kind of helpful advice, so I am going to (eventually, when work permits) schedule a genius meeting, and from there, either have them fix this and my other problem, or I am going to file some kid of false advertisement suit. You simply CANNOT advertise 200+ hours of standby and end up giving only 8 hours MAX of standby.

Ridiculous.

In the amount of time it took to read through all the post on this discussion (approx. 20 min), and not using my iPhone 4 except to check battery life, the battery went from 37% to 28%. A 9% drop in battery life and not even touching my phone is crazy. No wifi connection, email sent to manual, and I won't go into the complete list of things that I am not allowing my phone to do. When I was using the ios 5.0.0 upgrade my phone was working better than ever and I actually enjoyed the new updates that came alone the 5.0.0 upgrade, but then I decided to give the iCloud upgrade to 5.0.1 a try and since my battery is dying quicker than ever. Over the past 3 nights my phone is averaging exactly a 40% drop in battery life. This is crazy for a phone that is just sitting on a shelp. I want 5.0.0 back or an upgrade to 5.0.2 now.

It seems that, although there is a legitimate issue with some phones, there may be some confusion about how battery life is supposed to function under ideal conditions.

  • Talk time: Up to 8 hours on 3G, up to 14 hours on 2G (GSM) - equal to 12.5% and 7.14% per hour, respectively
  • Standby time: Up to 200 hours - equal to 0.5% per hour
  • Internet use: Up to 6 hours on 3G, up to 9 hours on Wi-Fi - equal to 16.6% and 11.1% per hour, respectively
  • Video playback: Up to 10 hours - equal to 10% per hour
  • Audio playback: Up to 40 hours - equal to 2.5% per hour

None of these estimates are meant to be read in conjunction with one another. Meaning, you don't get 8 hrs of 3G calling, PLUS 200 hrs of standby time, PLUS blah blah blah. These numbers represent the maximum amount of time you could expect to get for each task, if that ONE task was performed for the full battery life of the phone (under ideal testing conditions, which are described on the Apple website).

With mixed use, including calls, wifi browsing, email, texting, etc, the best I have been able to do is 39 hrs standby with 11 hrs of mixed-use included (standby time includes ALL the time the phone has been on, or used). This works out to an average of 2.54% per hour. Given the percentages above for each task per hour, I think my phone is well within Apple specifications (for mixed use).

I finally have the battery issue under control. I have done a number of tweaks any of which may have worked. The one that made the most Difference is resetting network settings. Go to Settings than General than look for Reset at the bottom. Then select reset menu settings. This has made the most difference for me.

Other tweaks I did were to location settings and email bit they did not do very much. I have wifi and Bluetooth on always.

I have the same problem! I never had any issues with my Iphone in the last year on the old operating system. I started to notice that the charge was a little worse with the new operating system, but now it horrible with the latest update! I fully charged my phone, and just by sending maybe 50 texts and using one app, my battery life was down to 10% in three hours. Please fix this!!!

For things that "just work" I dread each and every update to IOS because invariably it just doesn't, requiring you to go through hours of trial and error resets, restore, set up as new, restore from back-up etc etc etc hoping to finf the essential combination that will rectify problems caused by Appple's latest botched release.

5.0.1. is by far the worst I have experienced. At least with other updates, if the phone was affected, the battery depletion would take some time. This time around it seems to be that leaving my wifi on (3GS - sorry the advances with the 4 and 4S have not convinced me of the value of upgrade) will drain the battery completely. Went from 66% on standby last night to completely dead by this morning.

I suppose I could leave everything switched off (sorry Apple, didn't realise you couldn't actually USE all these features and connectivity) and wait for 5.0.2 (that's assuming THAT fixes it!!!!!) but I'd rather get the phone stable again. So, it'll be back to, restore as new and restore from back-up after to try and fix the latest dog's breakfast served up by Apple. Thankfully I didn't update the iPad 2!!!!

Great, as if I hadn't got better things to do!!!!!
