5.0.1 update--even worse battery life

After upgrading to 5.0.1 my iPhone is draining the battery even faster! Anyone else seeing this problem?

Well, I will eat my own words.

I just got off the phone with Nate from Apple who was genuinely interested in finding out the issue with the device and resolving the problem. He read my post here and gave me a call.

Right now, I have a battery monitoring profile installed. Hopefully this will provide the information they are looking for.

Thanks for your help Nate!

"Nate" is not who needs to make that quality commitment. it is the CEO - very loudly, very directly, very thoroughly and very quickly. With each hour and day he does not do this he makes it harder on himself and the company. They are in a panic internally given all the recent bad news and the fact that the new "fixed" software breaks older devices. Again this is not a technology problem. It is a cultural one.

Well, I have resolved to spend no more of my valuable time on this issue...ENOUGH! If this is indeed a software related issue then please get it right.

Apple,

I have used an iphone since 2009 and until this recent update on my shiny new 64gb 4s, I have been satisfied. I consider myself a heavy smartphone user but only for surfing and email etc. I would say that due to my job which is primarily out and about, it is an essential tool.

I'm no longer going to stop using features that require me to reset my settings each time I wish to avail myself of the technology.

If my iPhone 4s continues to need a complete charge after only 4+ hours of 3G surfing...this will be my last iPhone, at least until your performance returns to the standard which I have come to rely on. I could exchange it, I could return it. But I love it enough that I will put up with my sucky battery life and purchase an external battery.

If the iPhone 5 is released next year and it looks incredible and does everything short of adjusting my refrigerator so that my chilled beer is perfect, I will still use this 4s (assuming it lasts as your others have) or an alternative until I am sure the battery will get me through my day. My 3Gs did.

And as for my library of over 500 paid apps as well as my iTunes music? They will be there and waiting when my faith in your product returns.

Sincerely,

Al Mayo

Wozniak just said (on CNBC) Apple has figured out how to deal with and treat consumers.

He is dodging the issue. Nver mentioned the recent problems. Like the "hold if differently" comment from Jobs these kinds of statements are a VERY BAD sign. Ignoring the obvious and comments like the one Jobs made are exactly how not to handle this. Trust - along with quality, elegance and simplicity is what Apple sells. Tkae out the trust leg and the others crumble.

Apple seems they dont want to admit/realize that the absence of the "Enable 3G" is one of the main culprits behind these battery drains. The iphone 4s is constantly changing bands trying to get the best signal possible. All this switching back and forth consumes battery life. Experienced this first hand in an area where ony 2G was available. My battery life was almost identical to that of my iphone 4. Why this option was removed is beyond me. Perhaps it has to do with the new radio chip but whatever the reason this is unacceptable. Even on earlier phones below the 3g option it said " May load data faster but it may also decrease battery life". Apple in an efford to have one single sku for the 4s may have ended up screwing everything. I get it one sku is convenient for them as well as for the customer but please make sure it works before realising to mass market. I am fairly certain that the return of the 3G switch will be accompanied by the much-desired longer battery life

Same here. Battery life was pretty bad before the update, MUCH WORSE afterward (drains while sitting on your desk doing nothing, about 5% per hour). Two of my friends experienced this same problem after upgrading, two others did not. So ... this is obviously a hardware issue, a failure of quality among different production lots, no doubt. Since these bricks are manufactured in China, I don't know hy any of us are surprised.

I don't have an Iphone just an Ipod touch (current gen) and an Ipad 1 both updated to 5.0 and then 5.01 the update to 5.0 caused a minor decrease in battery life for the ipod touch the update to 5.01 caused a major hit to battery life on it , neither update seems to have affected the Ipad 1's battery life but boy are those multitasking gestures welcome .

Just another reply with the same issue but for my wife's iPhone 4. We both have them but I am using the Verizon version (she is on AT&T). I installed 5.0.1 minutes after it was released and she waited until yesterday. On 5.0.0 she as having no problems but now she's seeing 5%/hour doing nothing as well. Mine seems to be working fine.

Hope Apple figures it out soon.

Dave is absolutely right ... this problem is more than just iPhone 4, it is (in my case) the exact same situation on my 3GS.

Since I first posted on this two hours ago, I charged my phone to 100% and then took it off the charger. I only used it to (a) read a handful of emails, (b) turn on the screen to check the battery % a few times, and (c) take a look at my settings. In all, my using the phone a total of 10 minutes. Plus, WiFi, iCloud, etc are turned off.

What was very odd is, when looking at Usage under Settings, it currently says it's been 1 hour and 58 minutes of usage and 1 hour and 58 minutes of standby. I don't recall those numbers ever matching before. So, does the "fix" we all downloaded from Apple cause our phones to think they are being used non-stop?

Nov 14, 2011 10:45 AM in response to art_in_motion

Ok, I have 3GS, 4 and 4s iphones. All of them updated to 5.01.

3GS and 4 running Vodafone as carrier.

4S running TIM as carrier.

Only 4S, after upgrading to 5.01, shows battery draining problem (at an incredible rate, believe me!)

Both 3GS and 4 show really acceptable battery usage.

Hope it helps Apple engineers investigating the problem and get a fix asap. Erase all content and settings (and setup like a new iphone) did not solve the problem.

I have to recharge 4S at least twice a day to be able to go home at night with 15% battery!

It's a really ugly situation. I suggest giving it the maximum priority!
