Jan 9, 2012 9:09 AM in response to davidchby Saint Podoreo, davidch -- folowed steps 1-3 now in the process of step 4 (fully discharging). I'm hopeful your steps will work. Question: after performing all of the steps -- can I turn system location services back on?
many thanks.

Jan 9, 2012 9:20 AM in response to Saint Podoreoby rubberteeth,I'd like to know the same thing.
I followed davidch's steps and for now it seems to have done the trick. I took it off the charger after a full discharge and recharge this morning around 7:15. I used apps and safari for about 8-10 minutes plus made several phone calls and nearly three hours later it's reading 99%.
I discovered an odd thing before I reset and discharged/charged. I noticed that the phone was not using my home wifi but 3G. I couldn't find my home network in the settings and when I tried to add it as soon as I tried to enter the passphrase it would kick me out to the wifi page again.
After the reset I tried adding my network but it still would not connect. I tried the passphrase multiple times to be sure it was right. My other wifi devices are still connecting with the network though.
I wondered if before the reset the poor battery life was due to the wifi radio constantly trying to connect to the network becuase all during the time I was at home yesterday the battery was dropping 10% per hour but I left home for an hour or two and it only dropped 1-2%.
For now I've got the wifi turned off. Could I have a wifi hardware issue?

Jan 12, 2012 11:00 PM in response to art_in_motionby Burkeg04,I just got m 4S In December and my battery won't make it 4 hours it seems... ***? Is there a fix for this. I mean, I get turning stuff off and everything but if you disable everything then what's the point in having the phone? Isn't the reason we all bought iPhones is for all the functionality and usability? *** Apple? Any suggestions or tips?

Jan 12, 2012 11:28 PM in response to Burkeg04by jlucpicard,Burkeg04,
What cured my problem was to turn off the iCloud items, except for the Find My iPhone functionality. I understand your frustration about having to turn functionality off, and I share it. However, Apple is working on that issue. Until an update is released, you can fully discharge your phone (until it turns itself off). Then, when you're able to fully recharge it uninterrupted (do not unplug the charger until the phone reaches 100%). You should get your battery to last much longer.

Jan 13, 2012 1:46 PM in response to art_in_motionby Benny Blades,I tried davidch advice/steps and it for sure is helping my battery life. In a few hours, it will be 24 hours since the steps and full charge, I'm at 70%. Not bad I guess considering before I was well under 20% after full charge and using the iPhone4.
I also turned off iCoud items excpet find my phone.
Thanks for the great support here!

Jan 14, 2012 6:05 AM in response to art_in_motionby Nice To Meet Ya,For me a big difference when in the Netherlands using T-Mobile or KPN as a provider.
With T-Mobile we're loosing 15-20% overnight with a fully charged battery. With KPN only 3%.
The question what is the network of T-Mobile doing? I'm glad we are not using T-Mobile anymore.

Jan 14, 2012 10:07 AM in response to art_in_motionby Benny Blades,I just wanted some confirmation about turning everying off in iCloud other than find my phone. If everything is OFF (example Contacts) and I enter a few new contacts on my iPhone4, then the next time I turn contacts ON in iCloud they will sync up?

Jan 14, 2012 10:07 AM in response to davidchby Saint Podoreo, davidch's fix worked for me. I'm dropping about .5-1% with moderate/normal use. After full discharge and recharge overnight, turned location services back on for camera, siri, maps, weather.
Thanks davidch!

Jan 15, 2012 8:59 PM in response to davidchby vincentc92,Hey David,
I have an Iphone 4 and ya I think the update decreased my battery life as well. I so far am draining the battery after completing the other steps you have listed, and wonder after I leave it plugged in overnight, should I do a hard reset as well?

Jan 16, 2012 4:56 AM in response to art_in_motionby DazColl,Hi,
I have an iPhone 4 and have had no issue with my battery life until the weekend when I did a full restore to IOS 5.0.1
Prior to this I had upgraded to IOS 5.0.0 and done a restore from from an IOS 4 backup without any issues. 2 weeks ago I did an over-the-air update to 5.0.1 and still had no battery life issues. (I tend to leave WiFi on, have 3 email accounts - exchange, gmail, hotmail - with push enabled, and various apps running, as well as location services on.) I was getting well over 24 hours on a full charge with moderate use.
However the over-the-air update had killed a couple of my apps, so i thought i'd give the phone a full restore to see if that helped.
I did the restore to 5.0.1 and restored the backup i'd taken of the iphone on the 5.0.1 over-the-air version.
The good news was that the affected apps now worked again.
However I noticed an immediate problem with my battery life - it started using 20%-25% an hour! (The back of the phone was also slightly warm all of the time...)
I tried various methods to fix this issue to no avail:- Reset Network Settings - Reset All Settings - A full discharge of the battery followed by a full charge - Turned off Auto Time Zone / Location iAds - turned off auto brightness and turned down the brightness to less than 50%.
All those methods failed to stop the 25% per hour usage.
The last thing I tried seems to have worked. I deleted my 3 email accounts, did a full reset and have now restored my email accounts. My phone is running at about 2% per hour since this morning when I restored the email accounts and is looking back to normal.
I'm not sure why everything was fine in 5.0.1 after an over-the-air update, but a full restore caused the battery drain issue, but fingers crossed, it's all ok at the minute.
Hope that helps anybody else with similar problems.
By the way, for a complete list of 'tips' to try for this issue see:
