It's not limited to new 4S phones. My iPhone 4 experienced that same issue twice with today being the latest. The phone was in my pocket for about 2 hours and lost over 90 percent. The battery was so warm you could feel it through the case. This is an iOS 5 issue.

That's right it's certainly an IOS 5 issue.  I'm not sure how these voodoo fixes are making people think their battery life is that much better.  Sure if you disable every worthwhile feature of the phone and keep it in your pocket the battery will definitely last longer but I can guarantee you that if you're on 3G using an mp3 cable plugged into your car stereo and surf the web and play games all at the same time you will not get more than 4 hours out of a full charge.  Sure if I barely use my phone and it's features my charge would and has lasted days.  Yet for the frequent user these Voodoo tips have almost no effect at all.

iOS 5.0.1 is a battery consuming ios version, it uses a lot of services on a minute to minute basis.

    1. Data Usage. If icloud is turned on with all the toggles on, it uses data everytime evry single app is used, even if the phone app is used, for some reason, it keeps sending the log data to the icloud server linked to my account.

    2. Location. I dont know if a lot of people hav an issue with this, but everytime my location services are turned on, my phone consumes way too much batter, on the other hand, when i turn them off when they aren't required, i do end up saving a noticable amount of battery

    3. Jailbreaking. Is your iphone jailbroken ? if yes then let me tell you its the most battery consuming thing you have done to your phone.

In my case, I turned off all location services and wi-fi, then reset the phone. So far, it is back to normal.

Apple can and will fix it Goran.. It is not with all phones my dad has an iPhone 4 which is on 5.0.1 and it lasts 2-3days easy and he has everything turned on blutooth/wifi/ location services at all times.. There is not much difference between the iPhone 4 and 4s other then Siri/Camera/and the processor(which has been tested to not noticrabley consume more battery).. I do believe apple will fix it.. Unless worse case scenario there is a hardware issue.

I'd imagine your dad minimal user.  As are all of these people who can fix their issue when the battery is draining in standby.  But for those people like me who don't have an issue with their battery draining on Stand by yet have major battery drain when using the phone there is no fix for us and never will be.  It seems as if IOS 5 uses too much hardware voltage to run much like the 3G when IOS4 arrived.  It's pretty plain that the iPhone 4's hardware is best matched with IOS4 which is sad because ios5 is so neat.

Compared to me he is a light user, but he does use his phone a lot words with friends/surfing/texting/blutooth earphone always on.. He gets 7-8 hours of usage over 2 days.. I can't even get 6 hours of usage out of one day..:(... And as I said he has EVERY feature turned on.

I have gone through the hoops to reset and tweak all settings a few weeks ago and now back to super drain on the battery. If you use this smart phone as a smart phone, it ***** the life right out of your battery. Apple, this is ridiculous. Seems that whenever there is a new phone on the market, weird things start happening to the old model after the software update. Hmmmmmm......that would seem to make a lot of people frustrated enough to buy a new phone.

Wow I never thought of it that way but you're 100% right.  This is an intended result of the 4s being released however the sad part is the fact that the 4s has the same kind of battery life.

If you double click the home button you'll see all the open apps. Long press one of them and then click the red minus that appears in the corner. Click that on all of them to completely close all the running apps. On the ipad you can do the same thing by double clicking the home button or dragging 4 or 5 fingers up. I have an iPad 2 running ios 5.0.1 and I have not experienced any battery problems since the update. Big thanks to the people at the genius bar at the Apple Store in Waterside shops in Naples, Florida.

    Hi Dan,

I've been bouncing from city to city this past week or so and haven't had a lot of time to test, but from what I can determine it isn't push mail that's getting me on the exchange account it's only the calendar. I can run push without the constant cycling if I disable the tie to my exchange calendar.

I'm going to do another full restore today to see if it will update me to the latest build of iOS 5.0.1 as i'm still one build behind. Then I'll test again to see if wiping an bebuilding the account works for me as you've indicated it has for you.

Thanks for your comm to date.

Dear davidch or anyone that can help with restoring my phone. Thank you for your advice on restoring.

    davidch wrote:

aplCla55ic... you can restore as "new" or restore from "backup (iTunes or iCloud)". restore as new sets phone back to default after which you will need to re-setup and sync all data from some source on your pc or mac like the first time. this includes mail, address book, calendar, music, etc.  anything that you created on the phone that has not been re-synced back to the relative pc or mac application at some point will be lost and need to be re added on the phone. Note, that pictures taken on the phone are very frequently not sync back.

another more common option is to restore from backup. This restores everything back exactly the way it was at you last backup and is much more convient for most people. however, restoring from backups especially between different model phone and/or different iOS version can result in corrupt low level settings causing various problems like app instability, poor battery life, etc. if you decide to restore this way as most do, you can typically resolve those issues following my process below, step by step and in order. good luck!

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

2 a. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

2 b. If you do not get the complete new setup screen with language setup and setup as new phone or restore from iTune/iCloud backup, be sure to go back to #1 and reset all settings again (it should happen the second time)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd (settings -> location services -> system services)

    4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!

I followed each step and it seems like the battery is being used to much and other quirks that I was trying to resolve by restoring the phone are still present. Is it possible that it may take more than one attempt to restore the entire phone. I noticed you said it may take more than one attempt to get the setup screen to show up, but wondered if the same could be true with the rest of the restore process? Thanks again any help is appreciated.
