"Unable to verify account information" trying to use Hotmail on iPhone 4 with iOS5

Is anybody else having the same problem?


I'm using an iOS5 iPhone 4 and trying to use Hotmail. I enter my password and everything correctly and it keeps coming up with the "unable to verify account information" message. I've reset my network settings but that didn't help, either. Does anybody know a solution to this? I'd really appreciate any assistance.

Have you tried removing the account from your iPhone and then readding it?

Delete the email, readd it but this time instead of selecting Hotmail select microsoft exchange, enter all the information and at the bottom where it says discription change it from exchange to hotmail and press next. It will try to verify and then the same screen will appear except this time it will ask for a server, in the server box put m.hotmail.com. See if that works

I tried all the various suggestions, including the windows help items. None worked, even after the 5.0.1 ios update. I verified I could still log into hotmail directly from safari on the iphone. Finally I deleted the account yet again, changed my password from the hotmail pc site (using iphone), and tried adding the account (chose hotmail) and NOW IT WORKS. Not sure if this will help anyone else. I had tried it before and had't worked. I did remove an special character from my password, maybe that was it??

Probably all of you have solved the problem by now but I add my experience for future reference.

I had changed my password for security reasons and used only numbers and lower case letters for the new password.

No special characters and no upper case letters. After that I had no accsess and received the same message.

The password had 18 characters. After wasting hours for the solution I just created a new password with fewer characters (10) also without upper case letters and no special characters.

That was it! Everything works fine. Maybe ios5 has a... difficulty with the number of characters used.

Hard to believe but i have seen many unbelievable things from Apple. Hope it helps.

Found the solution.


It seems as if when you actually CREATE or CHANGE your password from hotmail, there's a limit of 16 characters for your password


When logging in via browser I'd guess that hotmail truncates your password down to these 16 characters, but trying to log in via an extern application this wont happend.




Just enter your password using "only 16" characters and it will work!



(Srsly, maximum of 16 characters in a hotmail password? How can people still use this ****)

I am also having the same problem - unable to set up hotmail on my phone - keeps saying unable to verify hotmail account.

Have tried all of the above mentioned things - and still no joy!


Oddly - it was working fine and just stopped a few days ago. Can still get into hotmail fine via safari - but driving me crazy how it's not working through mail icon.


Any suggestions I would be soooo grateful! Thanks.
