Why do apple earphones sound bad on Mac pro?

I own a 2009 quad-core Mac pro and I just recently noticed that when I plug in Apple earphones that came with my iPhone 4S, the sound quality export is exceptionally poor compared to the export when they're connected to the iPhone 4S. It's as if the sound is cloudy and unclear. Does anyone have the slightest clue why this is so and if there is a fix? Thank you.

Does it sound the same with other audio outputs, i.e., internal speaker, external speakers ?

If not maybe it's an impedence mismatch between the iPhone earphones and what's required for the mac pro (just guessing here). Try some other earphones or speakers for compaison.
