I cannot apply the MacBook Pro EFI update 2.5, and now the SMC update. The updater tells me they are available, but after restarting, I see they have not been applied, and the updater agrees, and tells me they are still available.
When the computer restarts, I'm supposed to see progress bar duting the update? If so, that never comes up.

Sorry, typo - it's EFI 2.3, SMC 1.5. Neither of them apply on my MacBook Bro
That may be true, depending on which MBP model you have. But is the Software Update application telling you they're available for your machine? If it is, they should install on it.
Yes, it's telling me they are available. And it starts the update process, then restarts the computer. That's where, in the past, I have seen the progress bar during booting, indicating that the firmware is being updated, but it never happens this time. I have also verified that the EFI update is available for this model, etc., MacBook Pro.
The firmware update is in your Utilites folder. Launch it from there to install it.
Could you be a little more specific? I haven't been able to find it.
I have the same problem with EFI 2.5 update from yesterday.

Power cord is plugged in, but does not help
Read somewere it could have something todo with SSD drives

Does this has todo with SSD drives?
I have an original MBP 2010-13" normal hdd, same problem. EFI 2.5 doesn't install, automatically nor manually. Strange. I tried safe mode, no succes. In the LOG appears 'install succesful' but checking the Boot ROM version it's still the old one. Software update keeps nagging me about this update. Strange.
The problem appears in /var/log/install.log. Search for 'EFI' in this file. You will find the errors. In my case the EFI partition (?) was missing, the only solution was to do a complete clean reinstall, removing every (bootcamp) partition and start all over again from scratch. Things go faster when using a spare harddisk, swap it with your default one, install Lion 10.7.3 and update the EFI. Then swap back your SDD or default HDD.
Edit: and as always: make sure you have a current Time Machine backup. Also don't forget to backup your Bootcamp partitions seperately if installed.
