Where are downloads stored?

Where are downloads stored on an iPad2? Downloaded a PDF file ,opened it but can't figure out where downloads such as these are stored for later retrieval. On an iMac, I can choose a folder to save to or save to the desktop. Thanks

iPad 2, iOS 5.0.1

There is no central file store in an iOS device as there is in Mac OS X. Documents are stored within the relevant app. What did you use to download this PDF?

Unless you copied it (via 'open in') to another app then it won't be stored on the iPad e.g. if you opened it in Safari then it is only in Safari's cache and won't be accessible.

If you download the iBooks app to the iPad then you should be able to use 'open in' to copy the PDF to the that - just open the PDF in Safari, tap on it, and you should get 'open in iBooks' appear at the top. Similarly in Mail you should be able to 'open in' PDF attachments to the iBooks app. They should then copy to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases
