iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now and have had much better sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

Hi all, just posting for some advice regarding a system restore.

It seems as though most people have had success after doing a system restore and setting up as a new phone (when I updates to 5.0.1 I needed to restore but chose iCloud backup instead). I am reluctant to lose too much info, so could someone advise me as to what kind of data would be lost a d what could be recovered from the cloud (not via restore but from my old phone)? I know things like apps and music would have to resynced but that's not a problem.

Thanks

Before doing a system restore, try the steps below. Corrupt system level settings created by an iOS 5 bug in the original release that caused battery recalibration issues, etc. Just installing the update does not fix the issue in most cases (sometime it initially can be worse). You need to clear out those settings and recalibate the battery. For those still having the "standby battery drain" issue follow the procedure below in order. It does fix the problem in most cases.

Go through these steps to address the battery after updating to iOS 5.0.1:

1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

2. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose "setup as new phone" (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail photos, will still be there). At this point, Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd

4. Fully discharge battery (till it shuts off with the spinning wheel)

5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases. It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple. Good Luck!

Ok guys. I haven't been using my phone at all today to monitor the standby drain.

I unplugged rit at 7:08 this morning.

Stats are (as of 10:40 am):

Battery: 90%

Usage: 20 minuets

Standby: 3 hours, 31 minuets

What are your thoughts?

it is definitely a little bit lower the norm, but not too terrible. my current stats:

Battery: 95%

Usage: 18 min

Stanby: 5hrs, 22 min

so i have 5% more battery and 2 hrs more standby. you might just won't to take it in and have apple look at it in your case. you may just have a bad battery

Hi there,

I have an iPhone 4S 16Gb Black,

I was loosing about 5-6% battery per hour, in standby.

I did the reset process you explained, and things seemed to be better (still 100% after 1 hour in standby), but then I went outside and my battery started to loose about 10% per hour (still in standby mode)...

I did a new reset today, so tomorrow I'll able to tell you if something change....

For now, I'm thinking that the real issue is with 3G connectivity...

Any suggestion?

P.s: Gps timezone and iAD = OFF

Bluetooth = OFF

iCloud = ON

Notification = ON (just a few, and Facebook notifications are ON, but not working.... but this is another problem =)

Push = ON

Mail = 4 accounts, all in fetch mode.

You need to go through the whole process, step by step including complete drain and full recharge:

from my experience i think its the 3g, because when im at home where there always a full bar in my signal, i'm loosing a 1% percent every 3 hrs on a standby mode, all notification are off, wifi=off, siri=on, location=off, but when im at the office where my signal tend to fluctuate every so often im loosing about 4% percent every hour with the same status on standby mode, why did they disable the button for 3g on and off unlike iphone 4 it has an option if you want to use 3g or not, hoping they will bring back the option for 3g usage

I have a 16G 4S. I did not upgrade to 5.01 after reading some of the issues. I have pretty much everything turned on but iAds and time zone check. I evem have bluetooth on all the time to have it available when getting in the car. At night the phone is in "airplane" mode to avoid any noise from incoming mails, messages etc. but it is in stand-bye as it is used as my alarm clock. I have never drained the battery completely (maybe I should?) and I am showing right now 82% after 1 hr 16 min of usage and 15 hrs 35 min of stand by. This seems fine to me but I am also not expecting a multi functional phone's battery to last more than 2 days max between charges. I will not update to 5.01 but hold back until I see what is next.

Hey,

I followed your steps a few days ago and now I think the battery is working better. At 22% I have 5hour 30mins of usage and 20hour22mins of standby.

I know it still requires a daily charge, but living in fear of losing battery is not the way to enjoy your new phone. Keep that in mind guys 🙂

BTW, anyone who can help me... I have set my Push notifications under Mail, Contacts, Calendars to off and have also set individual mail accounts to fetch hourly. However, I am still receiving e-mails constanting through my g-mail and exchange. Do you know why this is?

your battery looks relativey normal for that amount of usage and standby. push notifications is constant and will "override" the fetch setting if the email server supports push. since exchange and gmail both support push your fetch setting will be ignored. if you want it to only use your fetch time, you will need to turn push off.
