iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now and have had much better sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

Despoten all good intentions from the posters here, didn't help me a lot.

Before 5.0.1 all was fine, good do 2.5 days without any problems. After 5.0.1 no longer than 12 hours and all batterypower is gone. I know it's NOT hardware related as my phone worked fine!

I'll wait for 5.0.2

If that doesnt give a solution I'm off to another OS. (I'll give WP a try, after android and iPhone) too bad, as I much liked my 4s on 5.0.

This can be done wirelessly right? I saw another poster on another forum mention this having to be done over itunes (ie being plugged in) and just want to make sure. Also, does doing a hard reset (power button + home button until phone turns off) do anything for the battery?

the 5.0.1 update can be done wirelessly. just go to settings -> general -> software update and install update (its recommended to plug in first).

hard reset using the buttons as desribed in your post and or perfroming "reset all settings" in the settings apps -> general -> reset sub folder is the same thing. i typically recommend the menu mehod just because it is more straightforward w/o needing to explain the holding buttons arrrangement. you woud still need to fully drain and then recharge battery as my steps above explain... goood luck

after updating to iOS 5.0.1 did you try my step by step process:

1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

2. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd

4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

Thank you sir, hopefully I won't need it! And by plug in, you just mean into a power outlet and not itunes I assume, right? Thanks again for the tip!!

yes, power outlet (iTunes not required anymore) is recommended. you can do it without being plugged in, but just be sure you have a lot a battery. you don't want your battery to die during an update.

my battery performance has improved following these steps but still not as good as my old 3Gs. I turned off push for my exchange account and only synch when I open it or on demand and the battery life is much improved. it is WAY better now.

there seems to be an issue with push using more battery power than in my old phone, hopefully that will be fixed or improved...

cheers

I don't think disabling time zone in system services is required anymore. I found that just disabling Set Automatically in date and time prevents the time zone from using gps. I think you get more battery drain by disabling those system services because they might be generating error logs for not finding the location because you disable their permission.

So try it and tell me if you notice a difference in battery life. Enable Setting Time Zone and disable Set Automically in date and time for a day. I'm curious to see your results.

Continuing from my original post on page 11, after following the advice from davidch.

Overnight battery drain was originally around 20% is now only 3% which is about the same on my 3GS which I've had for about 2 years and the battery life is still just about as good as when i bought it.

I had 12% remaining today..with:

Usage: 6 hours, 15 minutes
Standby: 22 hours 12 minutes.

I consider this to be very good and thanks davidch for the advice! I leave location services off and only turn on 3g when I need to use it. Most of my usage is iPod, E-Mails, Websurfing, 15 minute facetime, about 3 dozen texts, camera apps such as instagram and in iPhone editing plus a bunch of calls.
