iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now and have had much better sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

Its fine to reset again if need be but is there a reason you think you need to? Wont hurt anything to do so though.

Hi again....Is it bad to reset all settings again, and restore from icould account? But before this, I had done your method and got excellent battery life. Addtionally, I had synced and backed up to icould before i did the second reset of all settings.

Did you setup as new or restore the backup you had before you restored in iTunes? Best fix is restore, setup as new, then sync iTunes to get your contacts back etc.

However if you restored firmware (via iTunes) then restored a backup you can try the "reset all settings" option Davidch outlined. That will sometimes solve the issue after you restore the corruption from a backup. Keeps your data intact as well

i recommend you try my process below with your iPod touch 4th generation. you mention upgrading to iOS 5. if you have not updated to 5.0.1, be sure to do that first. then follow my process step by step and in order.

1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

2 a. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

2 b. If you do not get the complete new setup screen with language setup and setup as new phone or restore from iTune/iCloud backup, be sure to go back to #1 and reset all settings again (it should happen the second time)

3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd (settings -> location services -> system services)

4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases. It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple. Good Luck!

HI davidch

just wanted to ask a question. I spoke to Sprint and they could not tell me so i figured i would come on the forum and ask you..

I recently moved. and the area i live in seems to cause my iPhone to roam. WHen i leave my house and drive a little bit out then i am fine. I am back on 3G Sprint. I believe the roaming is causing my battery to drain severly. I notice now that i cannot get a full day out of my iPhone anymore like a use to. I would get 24 hrs+ on some days. Yesterday I only for about 12 hrs of battery. Here are some of my stats from yesterday. My phones bounces back and forth all day from a really weak sprint signal to the "extended" coverage signal.

Last night, I charged my phone overnight and this is what is looked like after i took it off the charger for a little bit. I did not use it hardly at all. just to check the time every now and again.

Is there anything i can do to help my battery out at all? Moving back to my old place isnt an option lol but maybe something in the settings.. should i do a full drain and settings reset? please help me! Thanks!

That battery life is sort of normal if the drain is a result of the switching. Sprint network is not that good and as a result they roam on Verizon's network to keep you connected. Mainly in areas with no Sprint signal, which is mainly in doors and some parts of the US.

This happens on all their phones. Some show roaming and others Extended. If you don't want it to happen just goto General then Network then turn of Voice roaming. You won't connect any more and only stay on Sprints network. Anyway I recommend you try the settings reset following the steps in this thread. Then do a Network Reset.

Good Luck

Ram130,

Did a full restore and reset all my settings after the restore again just to make sure I followed the steps properly. Still having poor battery life. Right now I have 66% battery and about 5 hrs standby I think. It's still searching for service eventhough I turned off voice and roaming data feature. Idk what else to do. Any suggestions?

Not sure how exactly on Sprint, but maybe you can update your PRL to the most current. I believe the sprint code is ##873283#. I am Verizon user not Sprint so I cannot confirm this. I would suspect that turning off voice roaming would make it worse because it only looks for home network then and wont switch to the stronger "extended" network.

I've read your very helpful information on how to possibly resolve the battery draining issue caused by Apple's 5.0.1 software update. I have had my i4 phone for 18 months and have loved it, until about two days ago when it began to dramatically lose battery power. I hadn't changed my usage in any way, but the battery is losing around 5% per hour on standby alone. I called the Apple helpline who asked me to tell them my latest software update which is version 5.0.1 (9A405). I update by syncing my phone to my Mac laptop

(OS X 10.5.8)

She told me pretty much what you said in your recent 'even worse battery life' answer to aplCla55ic.

In other words I have to restore my phone to default. I argued that as Apple had caused this catastrophic failure of my phone THEY should put it right. I don't know enough about phones and computers to feel confident in trying to resolve the problem. I may make it a lot worse. I've also read on this site that many people who restored their settings still experienced the continuing battery problem. The helpline also told me that if I wanted them to resolve the issue I would be charged - I think she said £42. I almost exploded!

So Apple sends software to my phone which virtually disables it, and then tells me they want money to fix it Isn't this known as BLACKMAIL by any other name?

I've trawled through a fair amount of the misery people are experiencing with this same problem, and I see a lot of anger and frustration. But I don't see Apple holding up their hands and taking responsibility. Is it possible that they are currently frantically beavering away in an attempt to resolve this problem, or can their reputation and future sales withstand this disgrace? Like many other posts I have read I will not ever be buying another Apple product.
