iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now and have had much better sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

For anyone new to the thread be sure to go through these steps to address the battery after updating to iOS 5.0.1:

1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

2 a. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

2 b. If you do not get the complete new setup screen with language setup and setup as new phone or restore from iTune/iCloud backup, be sure to go back to #1 and reset all settings again (it should happen the second time)

3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd (settings -> location services -> system services)

4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases. It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple. Good Luck!

hey everyone...

i apologize for not being very active the last several weeks. i got a bad case of fifths disease that was pretty rough. the last week i have busy catching up with work and spent the last few days out of town at a business workshop... i am also trying to monitor this and a couple of the other related threads to try to help out so be patient with me if don't get back to you right away... i also have a wife and kids . i don't work for apple but am very familiar with their products and many competing products in the phone and computing industry. i do work in the mobile computing business and have long background in mechancial engineering, system programming and system support and i will do what i can to help. i started the thread primarily because many of the other threads on the apple support forum became too much of a "complain session" and would like to keep this one from becoming that, so let's please do what we can to stay positive. i have looked at the problem fairly hard and tried several different tests and my recommended process and settings seem to work in most cases. just follow carefully everything step by step in the first few posts and detail process above and i am fairly confident now it will resolve the issue for most users with the standby drain issue. if it doesn't, i recommend taking it to an apple store or authorized provider for further review.

Hi David,

I've owned a iP4S for a month and it came with 9A406. At the 2 week mark I began experiencing severe battery drain overnight. I did steps 1 and 2 (not knowning about this thread) and my phone now behaves like it used to. All system services are running also.

I don't understand why the phone suddenly began acting up. Whatever happened will probably happen again.

Hi David

I have the exact same problem with my 4S and would like to try your work around.

But now my question: If I do a complete reset choosing "new phone" in setup, what will iTunes then do when I connect the phone and there is still my "old" phone registered?

Thanks a lot for your answer.

Marcus

marcus,

choosing "setup as new phone" after doing a "reset all settings" does not exactly set it up as a completely new phone (which i agree is a little confusing). it merely sets the basic settings back to default. this inlcudes wallpaper, brightness level, network settings, etc. it should still connect to your iTunes as it did before...

Does this work for iPod Touch 4g? I just got a new one 2 weeks ago and i lose 20-25 percent in 1 hour!!! 😟 no background apps, brightness low, no email or icloud, no notifications etc. yet it still dies so fast D: So would this work for iPod Touch 4g?

although i have not tried one myself, this should also work for an iPod touch 4G upgraded to 5.0.1. it should also work for both iPad versions and any version for the iPhone back to the the 3GS that will run iOS 5.0.1... 🙂

Hello everybody,

My iphone 4s has already been 5.0.1 (9A406)

I did both reset all settings and network settings.

and i have fully discharged and charged overnight about 3 times.

This history below shows what i have done with my iphone 4s

Usage: 3hrs , 30 minutes : I opened Wifi about 2 hours for facebook app, but 3g always turn off.

Standby: 21hrs,51 minutes

Battery Life : 56%

I close all location service except Find my iPhone,

At the notification Center, I open Weather Widget, Phone,Messages,Calendar,Facebook,Reminders, Mail.

Anyway it doesn't use a lot of energy because I just opened wifi.

I just wonder is it okay for battery life in average?

About 3G, when i open it, every 2 minutes decreases 1% of battery.

Is it normal because it drains my battery so bad?

Thank you very much everyone. 🙂
