iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now and have had much better sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

Yes battery life improved so far but I haven't used it that long yet.

I noticed after the IOS 5.1 update that my phone would lose at least 20% of the battery life overnight doing nothing and connected to my home wifi. I reset the Network setting last night, charged the phone to 100% before going to bed and it was still at 99% battery this morning which is what it used to be.

I'm down to 80% today but have used 3g and wifi data and a couple apps this morning. Time will tell if this fixed it completely but it was quick and easy to do.

Hello David,

Months ago, I tried your procedure to improve battery life on my iPhone and it worked very well. Now that 5.1 is out, would appreciate your thoughts. From the last experience, I'm somewhat reluctant to upgrade without confirming that battery life isn't going to be an issue again.

Do you have any thoughts on whether battery life is an issue with 5.1?

Regards

Sanjay

sanjay from toronto,

I installed iOS 5.1 update on all our iDevices (2 iPhone 4S, 1 iPhone 3GS, iPad 2) at my house and am seeing similar results as I did with iOS 5.0.1 overall. However, I tried not doing my process on devices after the upgrade and the devices seemed to have worse battery... especially my wifes. Next, I "reset all settings", recalibrated the battery and things got mostly better. But it wasn't till I turned back of the system location services (Timezone, iAd) that everything seems back to before. I have been using them for a couple of weeks now and didn't want to commit until I felt sure. Again, I recommend upgrading to 5.1, resetting all settings, recalibrate the battery (full discharge, full recharge) and turn off location system services iAd and Timezone. 🙂

My battery life went down noticeably after I updated to IOS 5.1 also.

Here what worked for me:

After reading other users suggestions in this Thread and others, I decided to do the easiest first.

I went into >Settings >General >Reset >ResetNetwork Settings

I had to reconnect my Wifi but other than that it was simple and so far battery life has improved.

If that had not work I would have tried the Reset All Setting next as mention earlier in this Thread.

As standard practice I always let my battery drain down once to about 10% each month and fully recharge.

iforumuser,

"reset network settings" can work any many circumstances combined with recalibrating the battery. this originally worked for me early (as witnessed in the first few pages of the thread). however, for some folks, it did require a "reset all settings", so after a while i just recommended a "reset all settings" since it incompasses the "network settings reset". recalibarting battery once a month is also a good recommendation and mentioned in one of apple's battery tech tips (i think). 😎

king al1,

according to spec and assuming you split your data usage evenly on wifi/3g. standby 27/200 -> 13.5%, wifi usage .5/9 -> 5.6%, 3g usage 5/6.5 (mix 1/4talk and 3/4data) -> .so 13.5 + 5.6 + 76.9 = 96%. so, this would estimate that you should have 4% left over. since you said you had 1%, it would be underperforming 3%, but that is really close and could easily be lost in the estimates.

Hi David. You may remember me from posting a while ago while this thread was new. I'm still actually having battery problems. I've had problems in iOS 5, 5.0.1, and now in 5.1. I'm not sure what to do. This week it really upset m e.

I decided to leave it off during school (and I usually leave it on). I turned it off after school ended (it was at 100%, and it took about 15 mins to get home while I used it. When I got home, I was astonished. It was at 92% :| In 15 minuents!

The second thing was, when I got home from school on Tuesday, The battery was about 46% with about two hours of usage.

I was fed up with this, and I tried everything I could think of, including your methods a while ago. I decided yesterday to completley restore the phone and set it up as new. I ddin't want things to come to that, but I decided, that hopefully it would be worth it, because everyone I've seen online who's restored their phone as new have seen improvements.I did that, and I think there's a minor improvement, but not as much as I would have liked.

Current Stats:

Battery: 50%

Usage: 2 hours, 42 minuets

Standby: 9 hours, 29 minuets

It seems to be better than before, but not as much as I expected. If I double the usage and standby times, it doesn't reach 6 hours of usage OR one day of standby, and I think it should be able to reach one of those times.

What do you think?

Hi everyone,

I want to update everyone on my battery status... After downloading and installing the iOS 5.1 update, my battery life got worse. My battery life was better with 5.01 update after using David's tip. I tried using David's tip again after 5.1 was installed and no luck. My coworker told me that he did a full restore on his phone and it improved his battery life greatly. I tried out what he did and added it in with David's tip and sure enough the battery life improved! A few days ago I got about 7 hours of usage and 19 hours of standby. On the current charge, I am getting even better results! I am currently at:

Usage: 4 hours, 14 minutes

Standby: 1 Day, 7 hours

Battery: 29%

After last full recharge, I was at 100% for about 6 hours of standby and 17 minutes of usage. I was shocked! Here is what I recommend doing:

1. Backup your iPhone to iCloud (make sure you select everything you want to backup)

2. Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content and Settings (This will fully wipe out your iPhone back to factory settings)

3. Set up your iPhone like you just bought it. Go through your settings and choose "Restore from iCloud backup"

4. Wait until your phone is done backing up from iCloud. (This may take quite a bit of time especially if you have a lot of photos and videos on your phone.)

This is where some of David's tips comes into play...

5. Once your phone is fully restored from iCloud, play games, watch videos, or use as normal until you fully drain your battery. Do this UNTIL your phone fully shuts off by itself.

6. Plug in your iPhone to fully charge until 100% and unplug.

7. Use the phone as you normally would and let it drain again until phone fully shuts off by itself.

8. Plug in your iPhone to fully charge until 100% and unplug.

9. Enjoy your improved battery life!

Note: You will have to re-enter your WIFI info. You might have to sync your iPhone to iTunes for some of your apps after the iCloud backup is done reinstalling on your iPhone. I would fully drain your battery and recharge to 100% at least 2 times after the restore. After that, it is recommended to do the drain and recharge once a month.

Good luck everyone! 🙂

For anyone new to the thread be sure to go through these steps to address the battery issues after updating to iOS 5.0.1 or 5.1:

1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

2 a. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

2 b. If you do not get the complete new setup screen with language setup and setup as new phone or restore from iTune/iCloud backup, be sure to go back to #1 and reset all settings again (it should happen the second time)

3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd (settings -> location services -> system services)

4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases. It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple. Good Luck!

I reset the settings in my iPhone 4S and it's working perfectly now! 😎

Previously the battery would only last a few hours, but now it can last days at a time!

I used "Reset All Settings" and "Reset Network Settings". I did not "Erase All Content and Settings". I did not need to run the battery down to zero and then trickle charge it. Simply resetting the settings did the trick.

Cheers!

Davidch

Thanks for your tips. Ive tried and noticed better battery drainage when I'm on wifi. However, when connected to 3G the battery still drain pretty quickly. Is that normal in your experience? Or should the drainage be the same? I've even turned off wifi to see if that was effecting the situation perhaps because the phone was hunting for wifi but it does not seem to be the difference. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello David.

I purchased my 4S back in November 2011 and was receiving great battery life such as the following:

at 11% battery

usage: 6 hours, 15 minutes

standby: 2 days, 14 hours

I updated to the 5.1 version after reading your post to 'sanjayfromtoronto'. Since the update, I have noticed significant difference in my battery life. I am not using my iPhone any differently since I purchased it-except for adding a couple of new apps which I rarely use.

Currently I am receiving stats like the following:

Now, when my phone is at 11% battery,

usage: 4 hours, 19 minutes

standby: 1 days, 13 hours

13% battery

usage: 3 hours, 37 min

standby: 1 day 18 hours

4% battery

usage: 4 hours, 1 min

standby: 2 days, 5 hours

I have employed your reset procedure SEVERAL times, but that does not seem to make a difference in battery performance?

Any suggestions?

Thanks.
