Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

You guys think your battery life is bad?

My Settings reset doesn't seem to have worked at all. I think my battery is terrible right now Here's my usage throughout the day:

    Battery        Usage        Standby

    96%            18 min        25 m

    92%            28 m          58 m

    84%            41 m          2h, 22m

    79%            51m           3h, 30m

    72%           1h, 1m       5h, 25m

    70%           1h, 7m       5h, 56m

    68%           1h, 10m     7h 10 m

    55%           1h, 44m      7h, 59m

    51%           2h, 6m       8h, 36m

    50%           2h, 11m     8h, 43m

    48%            2h 15 m    8 h 52m

    45%           2h, 31m     9h, 18m

    37%           3h, 14m     10h, 6m

I'm very disappointed, this is nothing compared to what other people got with their batteries after the reset. Should I reset the Settings again? What do I do?

I suggest a full restore without restoring your backup, just re sync...Try it! If not, let us know.

Could I try resetting the Settings again first?

Go ahead. If it still doesn't work try these right after:

    * Disable calendar notifications.

    * If the above doesn't work, delete your mail, calendar acc,etc.. accounts,.Then perform a hard reset, and re add the accounts again.

*Disable Time Zone, in system services under Location Services.

    Good luck.

I use Gmail for email, and iCloud for everything else (Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Bookmarks, Notes, Documents and Data, Find my iPhone). If I delete everything, and re add everything again, there won't be duplicates, right?

Yes that's correct. I use gmail as well but via the "other" accounts section. Once you re add the accounts then your mail should re appear.

One more thing, make sure you don't have "calendar" enabled for for both gmail and icloud. Disable one, preferably iCloud..

Ok, I'll try doing this before I reset the Settings again

hey... i am back.  busy day at work today and did not get chance to log in.  sorry to hear it did not work so well for you so far, but it does seem very successful for many as i expected.  i can never hurt to try to reset your all settings again.  the mail changes will remain.  you will need to go back and turn of the system location services though (i.e. timezone, iAd).  everything else i leave on. i am currently only using mail and reminders with iCloud and i also have a business imap mail account.  be sure to fully drain and fully recharge after.  i am on my fourth day now and it still working very good.  i am at 71% remaining with 1.5 hrs usage and over 16 hrs standby.  remember the fix primarily addresses a standby drain, imho.  heavy usage can still pull on it, just as any iPhone i have owned.  if this does not work this time i would suggest completely wiping you phone as new, setup as new phone, sync add you data (i.e. mail, contacts, apps, media, etc).  you may just have a bad battery or hardware which does occur from time to time.

Yikes. I too was suffering from this battery glitch even after upgrading to 5.0.1

As of right now I am at 80%

    Usage details are

    Usage: 1 hours 25 min

    Standby: 6 hours, 10 mins

it was litterly loosing a percentage every 5 min prior. once I upgraded to 5.0.1, I did a restore as a new phone, and reinstalled everything.. little time consuming, but it's a LOT better than before.

White factory unlocked iPhone 4S 64 gb with Rogers.

Ok. All I need to do is reset the Settings again, then completley drain, then recharge, right?

Also, what do you think of my battery life today? I posted it on an earlier post on page 8. It doesn't seem good to me at all.

it does not look like it fixed the standby drain (i can take my off the charger now and after the first few hrs if i don't use it, it is still 100% sometimes)... corrrect, reset all settings, turn off any system location services you may want to, completely drain and recharge.  i really hope this works for you this time

Me too! I hope I won't have to restore my phone...

I guess this is a bit ironic. When I first got my iPhone 4S, I was upgrading from my iPhone 3G. I wasn't sure if I should've restored from the back up or not. I didn't want to manually transfer all my content over, but I also didn't want to take a chance with the data from my iPhone 3G possibly affecting my iPhone 4S. I hope that's not what is happening.

If I do take my phone to the Apple Store, which I hope I won't have to, what should I tell them?

I've done all the things suggested in this topic thread. I've been playing around on my phone with a constant stream of text, phone calls and some app downloading — roughly about 18 minutes out of the 25 minutes since the phone hit 100 percent. It dropped 1 percent.

I'll monitor this, but last night when I was sleeping, it went 1 percent per 1 standby hour. So, I think the battery is just fine now. But the advice has been helpful.
