Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

    Hello David.

I purchased my 4S back in November 2011 and was receiving great battery life such as the following:

    at 11% battery

    usage: 6 hours, 15 minutes

    standby: 2 days, 14 hours

I updated to the 5.1 version after reading your post to 'sanjayfromtoronto'. Since the update, I have noticed significant difference in my battery life. I am not using my iPhone any differently since I purchased it-except for adding  a couple of new apps which I rarely use.

Currently I am receiving stats like the following:

Now, when my phone is at 11% battery,

    usage: 4 hours, 19 minutes

    standby: 1 days, 13 hours

    13% battery

    usage: 3 hours, 37 min

    standby: 1 day 18 hours

    4% battery

    usage: 4 hours, 1 min

    standby: 2 days, 5 hours

I have employed your reset procedure SEVERAL times, but that does not seem to make a difference in battery performance?

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

I re-read your post again and something struck me that didn't before.  During my resets, 'Location Services" were disabled, but the "System Services"- location based iAds and Time Zone were still ON" within Location Services.

Would this make a difference even though Location Services itself was disabled?

    Thanks.

Hii, I bought 4s and I get a bit improvement when I upgrade to 5.1 now I charged once a day again.. It's a bit shame that my brother use samsung galaxy s2 which is much cheaper than 4s, and charge almost every 3 days.. It feels like I use ordinary phone..

And while I write this down I already loss 6%, wifi, no 3g, no other apps except safari..

Apple, take a serious action, before you lose your buyers' trust..

Thanks for the instructions.  It cured the problem with my husband's new iPad, which was a big frustration.

    Hello David.

Since I hit upon the problem mentioned in my last post, my battery's performance is back to the way it originally performed when I first purchased my 4S.

    Currently at 1%

usage:  6 hours and 20 minutes

standby:  3 days and 0 hours

    Back to Happy!

    Hello ram130,

I turn off everything that is not necessary for me like "push", 3G (i'm generally in a wi-fi zone), background apps, location services, etc.  BUT I do keep Siri (raise to speak) on at all time.

With the last charge cycle (my previous post at 1% battery), I made/received about 20 calls averaging about 1 minute/call, text messaging throughout the day, listened to roughly 30 minutes of music total, browsed Safari, did some Google searches, used some productivity apps and checked emails throughout the day, watched some YouTube and video podcasts stuff, I sometimes play about 10 minutes of Temple Run (NOT a gamer at all), but I can't remember if I played it during the last charge cycle, and I only used 3G when I'm not in a wi-fi area.

    This is my general routine.

Sounds good but how much hours would you get with 3G switch enabled all the time? Even while on wifi? Can you test that today ?

    Thanks

    Hello ram130

I can't test that today. I have a significant amount of battery left before a complete drain, so you won't receive an accurate assessment of my battery performance.

That is probably better tested when I start with a full charge of 100% battery.

hello davidch, i've tried your suggestion to reset all settings, but it seems it doesn't change my phone battery life. i wanna ask you, how can you get 0.5-1% decrease per hour? do you have your celular data on?

my battery status is like following:

when no cellular data and no wifi : 0,5%-1%/hour

airplane mode : less than 0,5%/hour

when wifi on and cellular data off : 2-3%/hour

wifi off and cellular data on : 5-6%/hour

is it normal? i've tried this all in standby mode. I bought this phone feb28th with bundled xl (indonesia), at that time, even when my wifi off and cellular data on, it could last 1,5 days. then i change it into another provider (im3), here comes the trouble, it last only 20 hours of stand by time. so is this provider have something connection with my phone?

    Regards,

    Peter

    Well guys...

    I'm on 5.1

Tried the restore, set up as new iPhone, and every other trick.

Yesterday I charged to 100% before bed, turned off all apps,

And went into airplane mode... Unplugged and this morning:

    72%!!!

    Standby only

    Ugh

So I just reset network setting.

If not better tomorrow morning, I'm going to genius bar.

Just got this 4s 2 months ago!

    Used to be great!

    Advice?

    Drew

have you installed any new apps lately? I installed 2 weather apps that caused my phone drain very heavily. I had to perform a restore to get my phone back to normal.. and i still dont know if its fully back to normal. I have to wait until its gone through 1 full charge and discharge. Or if youve downloaded a lot of apps and uninstalled them, sometimes that will happen. Im not sure why but its what happened to me

    hello davidch,

for a while my 4s was getting GREAT battery but this past few days ive noticed something going on.. I downloaded some weather apps (weather+ AND weather live).. come to find out that those apps were both causing my phone battery to drain... i didnt use them at the same time but i tested both of them. I wasnt sure if it was just 1 of those apps or both but it was both. I was barely getting a days worth of battery on 1 charge. The most i got was about 16 hrs standy but my usage was somewhere in the 6-7 hr mark. all on wifi.

So i took the apps off and charged my phone back up to 100%. I didnt let my battery fully drain. I believe i started the charge up at about 34%. I was told its not good to let the iphone battery go all the way down to zero and shut off all the time.. maybe 2x a month at the most, and every other charge up should be at 35%, is that true?

right now my battery stats are as follows:

    photo(2).PNG

i've only used it for 42 mins altogther, not for 42 mins constantly. Also, I had weather location on but i turned it off because i wasnt sure if that was causing my battery to drain. Please let me knw. Thanks!

Okay, so last time I did a reset, drain, then full charge this is what I got when it died:

    -Usage: 7hours, 46 minutes

    -Standby: 1 day 18 hours, 48 mintues.

Usage is pretty much all safari on wifi, couple of texts, and facebook

    What do you think?

For anyone new to the thread be sure to go through these steps to address the battery issues after updating to iOS 5.0.1 or 5.1:

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

2 a. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

2 b. If you do not get the complete new setup screen with language setup and setup as new phone or restore from iTune/iCloud backup, be sure to go back to #1 and reset all settings again (it should happen the second time)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd (settings -> location services -> system services)

    4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!
