Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

Hi all, just adding my two cents worth,

5.0.1 seems about the same as 5.0 for me. I did do a rest all settings after getting the phone and I think I'm getting pretty close to what Apple says usage will be.

With most of the time on wifi apart from about 5 hours on 3g here's what I've done - a number of short calls, half a dozen text messages sent and received, read and received about a dozen emails, location based reminders current for about 3 hours, around 2 hours online and using twitter and Facebook, played games for about half an hour, and about half an hour playing with settings and Siri - my usage is:

    Standby time = 1 day, 12 hours

    Usage time = 4 hours, 50 minutes

    Battery left = 39%

    FYI

    My seetings are:

Mail: iCloud and Gmail accounts both set to 15 minute fetch

iCloud: mail, reminders, contacts, calendars, notes, documents, photo stream

Notifications: phone, messages, reminders, calendar, cnbc, mail, twitter, find friends

Location: maps, siri, weather, reminders, twitter

Sytem services: all off but Mobile Network Search is on.

Will let you know the final result when battery drains.

I did a restore and set it up as a new phone. I am now waiting for it to drain, but personally i think i am getting better battery life than before.  here are my stats so far:

    Usage: 2 hours 3 minutes

    Standby: 12 hours 21 minutes

Battery is currently at 67%.  I think that seems normal...anyone think otherwise?

I will let you know the end results once i get below 20%

That sounds about right.  I am currently at 60% after 13 hrs of standby and 2 hrs, 40 min data usage

I have updated to 5.0.1 but did not execute a reset of the settings.

Looking at the statistics now, I have 34% left with 2hours 40 usage and 1 Day 11 hours standby. Not sure, but I guess this is normal operation, isn't it?

I do not have experience with it, since this is my first iPhone...

I have the iPhone 4 . Updated to iOS 5.01 ten minutes ago. Battery at 100%. In the time it has taken me to write this post on my phone my battery is now at 95%. Not good.

Try the reset, it does seem to make some difference.

At 39% remaining I had gone 1 day, 12 hours on stand by with a usage of 4 hours, 49 minutes.

Currently I have 8% remaining with 2 days, 30 minutes on stand by and a usage of 6 hours, 30 minutes.

Try allowing your battery completely out. To the point the shuts of on it's own, then give it a full recharge.

I did it last night and this morning my phone has been of the charger for 20 minutes at least and I'm just now at 99% on moderate use (facebook, twitter, safari). Hopefully it stays this way all day!

Does this work for iOS 5.0.1 in 3GS?

I did the same according to your instruction but I did not have an option to to setup as a new phone. After my phone reboots, the message shows 'Phone Restored' then prompt me to go through the normal phone setup.

Okay, here's the bottom line before heading to bed and leaving to recharge overnight.

    Battery remaining = 1%

Standby time = 2 days, 2 hours and 15 minutes

    Usage time = 7 hours

All in all I'm pretty happy with that and see, to be getting what the specs say as far as usage goes.

I noticed that a 10 minute call today used 2%, that would equal about 500 minutes to use 100% which comes out at just over 8 hours - pretty much what apple say to expect.

    Hope everyone else gets sorted.

If I reset my Settings, what exactly will this reset? Will I have to redo all my iCloud settings?

    sflomenb,

"resetting all settings" sets only the basic sytem level settings back to default. this includes desktop wall paper, network, screen brightness, etc. all your data, apps, mail and iCloud should remain the same and not be unaffected. after reboot and going through setup (re-choosing lang, wifi, enable location, etc) choose "setup new phone", NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes backup. also be sure to fully discharge and fully recharge battery.

    Hi,

do you have an exchange email acount on your 4S?

I use an exchange for work on my ipad 2 and my 4s. After 5.0.1 my ipad2 drained in 8 hors to 62% which it never did before with same settings.

My wife has a 4s as well and she and I took our phones off the charger at the same time yesterday morning. After 5 hours and only 32 minutes usage on mine the battery was down to 48%. Hers was down to 92% and she had probably 15 apps running in the back including skype.

Since I already got my 4s replaced twice i really think it has something to do with settings, exchange or iCloud or I just happen to get a faulty battery 3 times....

Do I absolutley have to restore as a new phone? Or will just resetting the Settings suffice?

If I were to do everything that you said, how long would all of this take?
