Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

I suggest you try a full restore after doing a back up, but set up as a new phone and don't add anything. Test your phone for 8 hours and see if the drain is the same, if it is then you have a hardware problem again. If not, restore your back up, if the problem continues after that then it's something in your backup thats transferring.

    Try that sflomenb.

it nevers hurts to do a rest-all and battery re-calibration... maybe 3rd time is a charm ;). i looked back at your stats again and do have pretty good amt usage time. what happens when you leave the phone in standby for several hrs w/o any usage.  Do you get much drain?

I think I get a lot of standby drain. At the moment I am writing this, I have 5% left, so there isn't much point in doing the reset again. I'll see how it does tomorrow.

My stats now, at the end of the day:

    5%

    Usage: 4 hours, 56 minuets

    Standby: 14 hours, 32 minuets

It's not that these stats are terrible, but I've seen people post here who are getting doulble my usage time (over 8 hours) and can leave the phone on standby for days. I wish mine could do that.

I might try that. That's a good idea. Thanks. I'm going to see what happens tomorrow, and then maybe I'll reset the Settings a third time. I might try the restore idea over the weekend when I have a lot of free time.

Tomorrow, I'm going to try to not use my phone at all, or as little as possible, to monitor the standby drain.

For anyone new to the thread be sure to go through these steps to address the battery after updating to iOS 5.0.1:

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

    2. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd

    4. Fully discharge battery

    5. Fully recharge battery

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!

I must say my battery life wasn't bad today. I unplugged around 5am, left the phone in stand by for a hour and left the house with 100%. I listen to music via regular headphones for 1hour, was in a no signal area for 45mins, sent around 30 texts, check and deleted a few emails(including this thread) and read news via a few apps for a hour or so. Also I was on a call for 50 mins with 1% left by the time I had got home and enable wifi. Here are the pictures:

    download (1).jpg

The above picture was right after I left work. One thing I notice today was my friend who had the iPhone 4 started the day off with 96% while I was at 89%. The usage at the time for me was 1hr 10min and 2hr stand by, his was alot less, around 24min usage and 1hr stand by. As the day progress we did similar things with our phones; on and off texting, some browsing. Checking each other battery life as we went along. By mid day I was at 68% and he was around 74%. He had wifi on and so did I(didn't realize until my lunch break since I disabled "ask to join") but none of our phones where really "connected". Anyway, I later disabled mine and few more hours later we were only 4% apart from each other, during these last few hours we both had our phones on stand by.

The following picture was after I got home and turn back on wifi, I was at 21% when I got in. I spent a hour on the phone reading news, I notice my phone stayed at 18% for a good 15mins. After which I made a call to apple to get apple care:

    photo 2.PNG

After a good hold time my battery soon gave way at 1% so I started to charge it up. Here is a my full day usage and stand by:

    photo.PNG

So, what are your thoughts on this? What do you think of my battery life? I'm still unsure if it's good, great or what..

    Thanks,

    Ram

    Hello,

i just followed the discussion for a few days, because at the first moment my battery seemed to be much worse with the new IOS 5.0.1. So I checked the status different times. And it seems to be okay -working fine.

    Here're the details:

    After 5 h 10 min Standby and 25 min Usage = 93 %

    After 7 h 12 min Standby and 35 min Usage = 89 %

    After 8 h 30 min Standby and 43 min Usage = 86 %

    After 10 h 30 min Standby and 56 min Usage = 82 %

    After 1 d 1h Standby and 2h 9 min Usage = 66%

    After 1 d 15 h Standby and 6h 15min Usage = 1%    (note: 40min of the Usage playing Rainbow Six)

I'm using 3 IMAP accounts without push and one Exchange (push) and push via Cloud (only mail).

Bluetooth is of, Timezone and local Weather disabled.

    Updated to 5.0.1 vi Iphone.

That's the result during the week. Of course the weekend can be a bit different- playing more with my iphone...

I posted in the other thread, the one spamming my email 100x/day,

Don't worry about this Battery Problem,

Because its not a Battery problem,

(a legit bug *may* have been patched in 5.0.1, but it's raison d'etre is to patch another kind of "bug")

Specifically the 0xCharlie kind of bug.

iOS 5 makes heavier use of your Radios (iCloud Sync, iTune Sync, Siri, LocationServices, your net connection and your cell phone are all competing against the Truth that you can only FIT so much juice in a small package.

Our batteries are ALREADY the best in class, mlook up the specs.

apple has to wait for certain data from the field, on an implementation so critical,

Too many Humans, all skill levels, just too much complexity to model in a lab.

This issue it a Temporary Inconvenience. Turn off a service or two (any that keep radios active), and you will survive.

For reference I'm now using my 4S all day and it's holding up just like my others, even though INSIDE all the parts are Bigger badder better.

    Hi there,

Im having problems with my iphone 4s battery, just done get it at all!

At 12.43pm today i checked my usage etc and it was the below -

    Usage - 2hrs and 4mins

    Standby - 3hrs and 57 mins

    Battery - 69%

If you had those times together, it adds up to 6hrs and 1min.

I only took my phone off charge this morning at 8.43am so it was 100% then! That is only 4 hours between 8.43am and 12.43pm! know i most definitely have not used 2hrs and 4mins of usage, im at work!

    Help!

I posted a few days ago. Mine works really well now, although battery drain is faster than all of the past iPhones. Just to reiterate, it appears that dragging over info from past phones is a problem. I set up my iPhone 3, 3GS, 4 as a new phone when I got it, and set up my iPhone 4s as a new phone. This was recommended to me direct from Apple. Then I synced with iCloud. Fortunately I backed up the 4 on ICloud before the 4s came out.  Bottom line, don't ever set up a new iPhone with backed up garbage. Always set up iPads and iPhones as new. I think my success with battery life are directly related to the fact that I did that with all my past iPhones. Good luck.
