Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

that is probably a good idea. tell them the steps you have gone through. sorry it didn't work out. i am hearing that the are working extremely hard on this and should have annother update shortly that would not require my process. i am not sure that it would fix you issue which maybe the actual battery.  good luck

    Continuing from my original post on page 11, after following the advice from davidch.

     

    Overnight battery drain was originally around 20% is now only 3% which is about the same on my 3GS which I've had for about 2 years and the battery life is still just about as good as when i bought it.

     

    I had 12% remaining today..with:

     

    Usage: 6 hours, 15 minutes
    Standby: 22 hours 12 minutes.

     

    I consider this to be very good and thanks davidch for the advice! I leave location services off and only turn on 3g when I need to use it. Most of my usage is iPod, E-Mails, Websurfing, 15 minute facetime, about 3 dozen texts, camera apps such as instagram and in iPhone editing plus a bunch of calls.

    Hi David,

     

    I tried doing the method indicated however when resetting I was never prompted with "set up as new phone" just took me straight into "set up wifi connection".

     

    I'm guessing this means it hasn't been done properly? It won't give me the option to set it up as a new phone.. All of the settings changed- went back to default I assume?  But I'm curious as to whether this is still going to work? Any reason why it won't give me an option to set up as new phone??

     

    Any help would be much appreciated.

    I just call to apple and what they said is that problem is more deeper then they were thingking. They working on 5.0.2 update. So let's wait as all this method of resetting etc is just or waist of time.

    you could be right.  i have not had a chance to research that yet. it was definitely causing some issues with the original 5.0.0 release, but may have been fixed with the 5.0.1 update.  i just recommended to turn it off to be conservative, but will look into it when i get a chance.  let me know your results

    yes, this does happen sometimes on "reset all settings", but i have not seen it myself.  others users that did not see the "set up as new" option, performed the reset again and saw it on the second try.

    I did not get the 'set up as new' option either, but it clearly reset all my settings. My battery 'drain' improved (after the deep discharge cycle) even beyond what I considered a good battery usage on my 4S.

    Regarding the battery drain issue, we are all waiting for 5.0.2. But in the meantime, what I'm not seeing a lot of people report is their phones warming up. A few do, but with such massive drains, that is a lot of energy expended, and I would think the phone would get warm (as it would when I had my mail corrupted and the activity wheel just keep spinning).

     

    It makes me think the main part of the issue is battery calibration, where the phone 'drains' and shuts down, but in fact the battery is still pretty well charged. And Davidch's fix seem to be the answer for most.

     

    Is this true, do most of you that lose 50% or more in a few hours, not experience an overly heated or warm phone?

    your welcome and glad hear it worked out for you also.  it does dramatically improve the standby drain in my experience for most users having the issue.  in my personal opinion, it is definitely a system level "software" issue (processes, etc) that causes some sort of battery calibration problem.  it seems the 5.0.1 update fixes the problem, but the settings and calibration were also damaged by the issue.  by resetting and recalibrating, everything gets fixed for most people.

    viewfly, I am having the rapid battery depletion on my 4g iphone. I notice my phone gets a just little hot during charging, but I think it was doing that at times before the update.  However, since the update it seems to charge up surprisingly fast. Would that be an indication that the battery is still pretty well charged?

     

    FWIW, I went to the Los Gatos Apple Store yesterday and got minimal help (e.g., suggestions to turn off location services, turn off Auto-brightness, manually retrieve mail). The two "geniuses" I spoke with did  not appear to be up to speed with this issue at all. One guy said he'd not heard of this issue with 5.0.1, but  the woman admitted she has the same problem on her personal phone.  After showing the guy davidch's solution, he didn't seem able to explain to me the impact of Reset All Settings, so he said to completely drain and charge the battery 3 times in a row (which sounded a bit Wizard of Oz-ish to me, but hey, I'm not an expert). If that did not work, he suggested a full backup and restore. If that did not work, he suggested getting a new phone under warranty.

    A warm phone during charging is normal since you are rapidly putting energy into the battery. Likewise a rapid battery drain (and you didn't say how rapid yours is) would produce excess heat too. You can get this by having long phone calls for example.

     

    It you are having a rapid 'drain' without heat produced, the phone software may only think the battery is draining, but it may not. Unfortunately, to save a battery, the software shuts down the phone, not the actual  state of the battery.

     

    I would ignore the apple genius advice, and not due a restore. Rather follow davidch method instead. A full discharge/recharge should be done afterwards, and after that about once per month or few months (as per apple recommendations, and dell, HP, etc, etc).

     

    Rumors are that 5.0.2 will be out late next week...but try davidch's method now if you are having big problems.
