Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

    Hi, David,

My 4S is quite new, bought a few days ago. The battery life is not that ridiculous but still not satisfactory for a new phone. After I saw your post, I followed your method EXACTLY step by step. And I've try the whole process twice, but haven't seen any improvement. Here is my battery data:

    97% 25min usage 1h22min standby

    84% 1h5min usage 3h34min standby

    68% 2h2min usage 4h55min standby

    53% 3h12min usage 6h27min standby

    39% 4h9min usage 9h27min standby

    16% 5h29min usage 12h48min standby

You might think it's not too bad, BUT the data is not true! I didn't use my phone that much, and my phone is generating usage all the time when left standby! So I guess something is constantly running? (but I normally shut down all the background apps after using them.)

The true data is: Currently my battery drops about 2% per hour when standby and 1% every 3min when in slight usage. I've also found that when I go to some places where the '3G' disappear from my top bar, my battery can sustain twice as long (1% every 6min in slight usage).

I'm thinking about changing for a new iphone or waiting for 5.0.2. What should I do? Help!

After suffering for a week with my iPhone 4S (previously had an iPhone 4) I followed these steps and this was my first day of usage (after following davidch's recommendations.)

    Remaining Battery: 1%

    Usage: 6 hours, 5 minutes

    Standby: 1 Day, 5 hours

    Good? Bad? Average?

I did my recharge (after draining the battery) in the afternoon so I left it unplugged overnight. The battery only dropped like 5% during the 7-8 hours I was sleeping. However, the battery seems to drain much faster while it's sitting (idle) at my desk. Is that b/c I likely get less things pushed to my phone (mail, notifications, etc) during the day versus middle of the night?

here is a suggestion for iphone designers for the next generation

make the phone .25 of an inch thicker and put a real battery in it that YOU think should last a month, then maybe normal people can go a day or 2 without charging, don't get me wrong I love my iphone, features etc. but batteries have always been a low point on all models, everyone i know with an iphone of any design seems to carry their cable with them if going anywhere for more than a couple of hours. I keep one in my car, one at home and one at work. but still hard to keep it going all day if used a lot. portable means not needing a cable!

I would say your battery usage is fine.  You are draining at about 3.41% per hour; that's within specs (assuming mixed use of the phone).

    hello davidch,

thanks for providing the method for resetting the device.  I know you mentioned that if you follow your steps that you will still have all your apps, but the one thing I am concerned with would be losing my contacts.  I am on Verizon if that helps

I'm Verizon too. You won't loose your contacts however you may loose contacts linked to text messages. If that happens just do a *228 and close phone and message apps and reboot.

If you go into text messages some of your contacts their will only have a phone number. Others will have their name. It's a weird bug. If you experience it just try the above and you should be fine.

Just for reassurance, if I do set up my phone again as a new phone, I will not lose any apps that I have downloaded?  Granted I only have a few apps seen as I purchased my 4S a few weeks ago, but all the apps I currently have on my phone should remain intact, yes?

all your data should be preserved (apps, contacts, mail, photos, etc), but it is always a good idea to backup all your data first and reguarly (for that matter).  you can backup to iTunes and/or iCloud (if you need sometime in future).  however, when you perform the process do NOT restore from backup.  setup up as new phone.  sounds kinda of confusing, but all your information will still be there.  ONLY the basic system level info will be reset (i.e. wallpaper, wifi, etc)

For anyone new to the thread be sure to go through these steps to address the battery after updating to iOS 5.0.1:

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

    2. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd

    4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!
