Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

    51%

    16hrs 50min Usage

Left in Standby/lock mode for approx 10hrs over night, went from 69% to 58%.  So approx 1% drop per hour, which would translate to 100 hours of standby time, not 200. I'm not so much concerned about that, but about what my usage is getting.

Do the numbers above seem ok?  Any other thoughts to what is a reasonable average?

Thanks davidch, for taking the time to help so many people and discover a useful procedure to help out.

Barry1616, the expected 'usage' time ( a unknown mixture of calls, browsing, txting, etc) is about 7-8 hours. So at 51% your expected usage time would be  3hrs 45min/(1-0.51) = 3.75hrs/0.49 = 7.6 hours. So as davidch said, you are right on target if your standby time is 16 hours.

However, the other item to take into account is whether or not your 'usage time' seems reasonable to your feeling on how much you have used your phone and compared to your standby time (your 16hr 50min in your case). If you are using the phone very lightly over a 5 hour period (for example), you might have 50 minutes of usage time over 5 hours of standby time. I found that before using davidch's procedure, my 'light' usage time might be 1 to 2 hours over 5 hours, with a corresponding lower battery % percentage. The calculation would still come out to 7 hours or so...but the battery would be down to 30-40% at the end of my day. Something just didn't seem right, even though my phone was lasting throughout the day.

Now it is more likely to be at 60-70% at the end of the day. The ratio of standby to usage is much higher than before, and seems reasonable to how my other iPhones worked and more normal for me.

Is that usage time (7-8 hours) on 3G or Wi-Fi? I can get near that on Wi-Fi (by doing your calculations), but nowhere near that on 3G.

When I use Wi-Fi the whole day (like if I'm home the whole day) I can easily get around 7 hours of usage (by doing the calculations). But for some reason, when I did the calculations from my times when I'm out of the house for most of the day (and therefore using only 3G) I only get about 3-5 hours from the calculations. It shouldn't be that big of a difference. If I had my 'Wi-Fi battery" when I used the 3G, it would be perfect.

My current battery (shown below) compared to Barry1616's is still pretty bad. He had almost double the standby time I have, and we have just about the same battery percentage. AND I was on Wi-Fi the whole day!

    55%

    Usage: 3 hours, 30 minuets

    Standby: 9 hours, 57 minuets

sfomenb, Disable iTunes Wifi sync. This will increase battery life on wifi.

Ok, I'll try this. I wish there was a way to improve battery on 3G though.

You could try disabling PUSH and setting everything to FETCH for 1hour..I actually saw an improvement. Funny thing is my emails seems to come in less than the interval.I think it also seems to refresh once you turn on your screen. I think.

I use a mixture of wifi and 3g.  Today it was mostly wifi, but a couple of few hours of 3G too.

    For today:

    2 hr  22min of usage

15 hr 26 min of standby

    battery at 65%

Usage time will vary a lot. For example  iPod'ing consumes very little power, while camera, LED's on, GPS,  consume a huge amount. You can use a program like Battery Doctor to help you figure out , what are the battery hogs.

I have push on 3 email accounts (and a lot of emails from this thread!), plus exchange calendar. I did browsing,   a few phone calls today, and a few photos.

It seems to me that you are doing well.

Just when I thought I was confused enough, Viewfly had to throw math into the mix!!!  :-P

    Currently at 18%

    7hrs 10min usage

    22hrs 55min Standby

I would probably be classifed as a moderate to heavy user....mainly today checking email, texts, ipod and a few games which I'm sure use up more battery life.

    Thanks

your welcome and glad it is working out!  after going through the frustration and figuring out a solution.  just wanted to share the joy, i guess.

this was nearly my identical experience when i first started using my iPhone 4S.  i could make it through a day at 20-30%, but just did not "seem right" compared to my previous iPhones.  that is why i researched and tested it to figure what was going on, especially after the iOS 5.0.1 update.  after my process, it now works as good, if not possibly better than my previous iPhone when new which was really my end goal.

i mostly use 3G myself throughout the day and use wifi when i get home at night and sometimes in the morning.  i run a mixture of data usage mostly web, email and texting and some talk.  i have iCloud on push, a personal biz account on IMAP w/ hour fetch.  i still have not begin using much beyound reminders and mail with iCloud but will likely start trying some of that this week (i.e. photos, calendars, data synching, etc)

    current stats:

    45% battery  Usage: 2hrs, 58 min  Standby: 1 day, 11hrs

Agreed.. 5.0.1 did improve battery life, but it's still not what it's supposed to be. I have done this, restored as new phone, and disabled ear siri. It's bearable.. but not what its supposed to be.  Patiently waiting for the release of next ios update.

I think i need to follow these steps because i think something may be wrong with my battery. I did notice today for aobut 3 hrs on standby it only dropped 1% but as soon as i picked it up to use it, i started to notice the drain. I used my phone for about 7-10 mins... made 1 call, went on twitter and facebook for aobut 2-3 mins each tops, and i dropped all the way down to 94%. is that normal? what should i do? it seems like my standby time is decent but as soon as its in use the battery drains awfully fast. HELP ME PLEASE!
