Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

Have your tried the "reset all settings" fix? I seemed to have worked for me but i am still testing that theory out. My stats for this morning were 7+ hrs usage 24 hrs+ standby and 1% battery.

    Hi Davidch.

Thanks a bunch, and I owe you a beer for all your efforts. I did everything you suggested and it seemed to help for the first day, but I have some phantom usage going on and I'd like your thoughts.

I went to bed last night and lost 24% in ~8 hrs. That seems wrong.

The usage, though, sticks out in a weird way.

Went to bed: Battery 100%, Usage 36mins, StandBy 59 mins

    Woke up: Battery 76%, Usage 5hrs 47mins, StandBy 9hrs 37mins

What was going on for 5hrs that I was asleep?

    Here's what I have on:

Notifications: Weater, Phone, Messages, Reminders, Calendar, Facebook, Mail, GMail

Location Services: Camera, Safari, Siri, Weather, Find Iphone

Mail: Push (Yahoo, Exchange for GMail)

Bluetooth is off, Wifi is on

iCloud & Wifi Sync are On, but last Sync was when I charged

Here's my data the First Day After your Fix

    100% to 0%: Usage: 15hrs 26mins, StandyBy: 1Day 0 Hrs

Usage is also very, very high (and I'm not on my phone that much)

    Breakdown:

On Wifi, plus after sleeping: Battery 43%, Usage 12.24hrs, Standby 18.39hrs (not decimal, but you get it)

    On 3G for the rest

Wifi Use: 2 phone calls, 10 texts, 1 email, and reading email, plus facebook

3G Use: 1 phone call, 5 texts, 2 emails, and reading email, facebook, listening to podcast and 30 mins of streaming audio (to kill the battery)

Sorry for the long post. Thanks to anyone for their thoughts/help.

    AJ

    Round 2 update:

    1%

    7hrs 21min usage

    1day standby

I think this is about average, and decent battery life.  I figured after reading all these posts, and what I've seen so far if you are around 3-4hrs at 50-60% battery then you are about average.

I'm not sure if it's worth another charge cycle, so I'll probably just now keep it charged as much as possible and do a monthly drain.

    Thanks

This looks to be good.  Glad it worked.  1-3 full discharge/full charge should do it.  After that I would just back to your routine (mine is typically charge every night even if it is no where near empty).  Then, do a full discharge/full charge about every 3 months or so.  Enjoy you phone and try not to think too much about it anymore.  Some folks are even turning off there % icon now which is nice to hear...

Has anybody done davidch's method while on 5.0 and NOT on 5.0.1?  If so, was it effective?

This solution seemed to solve my problems.   Now I can get 1 1/2 days of moderate usage from a single charge with everything turned on except Settings->Locations Services->System Services->Location-Based IAds and Settings Time Zone

I want to try this method really badly, but I'm not sure if I need to update to 5.0.1 beforehand.  I'm afraid 5.0.1 will mess up other things on the phone (namely the speaker issue that some people are having).

My results were almost identical after the reset and drain:

    1% remaining

    7hrs 20 minutes usage

    1 day, 1 hour standby

I'm going to do two more drain/charge cycles over the next few days to see if it improves from here.

    Hey David,

I did the reset earlier today and I'm about fully discharged. After I fully charge her once more, I may just wipe her completely and let her run down tomorrow. What do you think? I just saw on a post  where people are having problems with their iPhone speakers. I guess that explains it. After I did the update, the speakers ceased working when using the iPod for music. They're fine for telophony. It will all work out.  It's good of you to take time helping everyone out.

    Thanks,

OK It's the end of my work day and I am sitting at 2 Hours 48 Minutes Usage, 10 Hours, 53 Minutes Standby and 60% left on the battery.  I have not babied my phone today. I made a number of phone calls, sent 12 - 15 emails, a couple of text messages, downloaded a song (Starbucks had Michael Buble up as the free song this week) updated an app, played a game for about 10 minutes and listened to music on headphones for about 30 minutes while working on signing the departments christmas cards.  I am sitting in front of a PC all day so I can do most of my searching there so I didn't need to hit my phone that hard on the web.  The only thing I did on WiFi was download the song.  My company has WiFi blocked up for most things so it isn't really an option for me.

I am going to run it down before bed tonight and do a full recharge so see if that helps any more or not. More reports tomorrow.

I DID IT!! I think these extra settings will help some people!

Well today have been a amazing day for battery life!! I must say I was growing with others on the fact that this would never be fixed. I'm amazed now! Also I think I've found a way to full proof your methods davidch which resulted in my great increase. This of course was after my 5th settings reset.

Today I plugged out my phone around 5am or so and left it on stand by until I got ready and leave out by 7am. Battery was at 99%. I listened music for around 30min on my way to class in a No Service area. I was at 94% at 8am when I got to class. I thought today would have been a worst day for battery life at this rate, man was I wrong. As my day continued I listened to more music on and off for another 30min, going in and out of No Service areas. I was even on o(Verizon's E or 2G service) for an hour which I thought would drain my battery life alot, it surprised me because I only lost 2% in a hour on stand by in a patchy signal area. Nearing the end of my day this is what my usage looked like:

    photo 1.PNG

So far I had listened to about 1 hr 30mins of music via headphones, 1hour worth of voice calls, a game for 5mins, some news reading for 10mins and 5-8 texts. Impressive I thought, but I knew it wouldn't last me by the time I would reach home. Again, I was wrong..

    photo 2.PNG

by now I had started to head home after my final class for the day and was using my phone full on. Listened to another 30mins of music, ask Siri a few questions..

    photo 3.PNG

Referring to the above picture. By now, I was finally home, after asking siri to text and play a song and  another 30min call!! WOW! it gets more interesting. I read on the news that there was some deals on games, so got one and had it download 500MB in the background while doing another 10 texts. Finally my battery hit 1%, of course it still had another hour of stand by in it left. Here is my final usage!

    photo 5.PNG

I AM SPEECHLESS TOO ..lol..I think I just fell in love in my iPhone again..

I'll describe the extra steps to take in another post following..

    Hey Thom_D,

I think you are actually getting average usage and don't have an issue.  I did 2 rounds of a full charge cycle, and both times I ended with around 6-7hrs of usage and 15-24hrs of Standby time.

If you are on pace for over 6hrs of usage and 22hrs of standby time, on one charge I think that's normal.  Alot of the battery life comparisons people are looking at, and I was guilty of this initially, is only doing 1 thing, not doing the 5 or 6 things we all do with our phones.  So checking email, using apps, making calls, will all use up the battery at different rates.

From what I have seen in reading almost all of the posts in this thread, and my own experience, 6-7hrs of usage at 1% battery life is normal.

Just as I'm typing this I am at 74% battery life, 3hrs 18min Usage, 4hrs 36min Standby time.  Fairly low standby time but the usage is on par with what I've seen in previous testing.  Also I just got off a 40min call so I'm not too worried about battery life at this point.

I think if we consistently see a less than 6hr total usage on a full cycle then it might be cause for concern.

Good luck and I hope it works out for you!

    Thanks

WOW. You guys are so lucky. I can only get about four hours of usgae on my phone per day. When my battery was at 75%, I only had one hour of usage.

It's amazing how you guys can get 7-8 hours of usage on your phones, and I can barley get 4-5.

    sflomenb,

Try all the steps plus my additional steps in my next post. If they don't work then you have a hardware fault. Just look at my previous post to see how bad my battery life was..I'm now confident 2-3days of stand by is possible with moderate use.
