Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

Try all the steps plus my additional steps in my next post. If they don't work then you have a hardware fault. Just look at my previous post to see how bad my battery life was..I'm now confident 2-3days of stand by is possible with moderate use.

I already reset my Settings and drained my battery for the fourth time. I'm in the process of recharging it. I guess I'll have to try your method tomorrow. I'm eagerly awaiting to see what you did to get such amazing results

Now using davidch original steps and attaching the tweaks I made to get me more usage. As shown on page 29.

Go through these steps to address the battery after updating to iOS 5.0.1:

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

    2. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd

    4. Fully discharge battery  (till it shuts off with the spinning wheel)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

    6. Disable Siri 'Raise To Speak' and REBOOT *( if possible use another camera to verify the                 infrared is off after the reboot).

    7. Set emails, icloud and calendars to fetch. ** test. Mines on hourly.

    8. If your in a no signal and your phone is saying "Searching..." even after 10mins, reboot while in that area and after 1-2min it should say "No Service". This mainly applies to Verizon customers and improve battery life in these areas.

    9. *optional* Goto Settings > General > Network and you will see "Hotspot.." loading something, wait a few seconds and it should say "setup personal hotspot" then exit out.

    * I notice a great improvement after disabling this and rebooting. This increased my "screen on" usage or at least helped it. Make the change.

** I have not tested push yet to narrow down the drain but I had this change on my phone. I believe exchange push is responsible for some stand by drain. As for icloud, haven't notice much of a difference. Just try it for a day. My email still came in fast most times. Again still testing, will report back on these..

davidch, if you want you can amend these additional steps to help everyone get more battery life.

Well i hope it helps. I know you've see some of my previous results and I was ready to give up and **** loud. I just kept messing with settings and trying different things...I still have calendar in my notifications, I don't close apps, unless I feel like it, I annoy Siri when I feel like it, my location is on for most of my apps except the ones that don't needed and the same for push notifications. Anyway good luck!!

BTW, this week had made it my sixth settings reset!...the above made the most difference for me.

4 and 1/2 hours is pretty poor to get by 1%.  It is pretty far out of normal than I or most users get (7hours).

What are you doing with your phone? Not all activities consume the same power. GPS, camera, LED on is by far the worst.

Having the screen-on itself is just like browsing the web...for any OS or phone (I learned this with  non-smartphones) the screen consumes power. I make sure to have screen Auto-Lock on to 1 - 2 minutes, tops, and lock my screen when I'm finished with the phone. No password needed. Having the screen on while you read or flip around...it is normal to watch the meter deplete in front of your  eyes...you are using a bit of power there.

Some examples 'usage' time for a fully charged phone:

8 hours of ONLY 3G talk time

6 hours of ONLY internet on 3G; 9 Hours on Wifi

40 hours of ONLY music (ipod), assuming the screen is off

3.5 hours of ONLY camera or video recording.

2-3 hours of ONLY GPS usage.

2 hours of ONLY LED on (like flashlight)

    4 hours of ONLY Facetime.

4 hours of ONLY playing a 3D game.

10 hours of video playback (7 hrs of youtube playback)

What you actually get is a mixture of these, with 7 hours being a good average (for most people) before you deplete the battery. Even with davidch's fix, I think there are still some problems, but davidch's got me back to a normal range.

So if you are still getting only 4.5 hours with your 2nd phone, I'm curious as to what you are doing with your phone? For example someone only using it as an iPod will have larger usage time ( 15 hours or more), but someone making videos all day with get just a few hours.

I have all notifications set on manual, screen at 50% on brightness with auto brightness on. Screen lock on after 1 min, wifi off unless I'm in a wifi area, I'm pretty much at bare minimum on e erything. Location services all off except for find my phone. On my first phone after the 5.0.1 update I went from fully charged to dead in about 4 1/2 hrs regardless of usage. I have yet to get 7 hrs of usage out of the two iPhones that I have had in the last month or so. Im open to anything that would help. I'm not really to keen on getting 5.0.1 just yet.

I just reset my 4s according to the instructions.  Here's something noticed since Day 1 of having the phone, the Battery Percentage Toggle was non-responsive (meaning the % remained "on" EVEN after I had turned it off).

With the reset and update of 5.0.1, the Toggle now works, so I am hoping for the best. Am going to completely discharging the battery and then charging it to 100% tonight.

Will update and see if there's any improvments. Thanks!

Reposting this to show that really good results are possible. I also think that the carrier for some reason can make a difference, I would be interested to see what other Australian Optus users are getting. Have done a reset after 5.0 and again after 5.0.1, drained to 0% twice - this made some difference but I don't think my battery was too bad to start with.

In notifications I have: weather, mail, calendar, reminders, phone, messages and Facebook.

Location services have maps, Siri, and weather on, with compass calibration and mobile network search in services.

I have iCloud and gmail accounts both set to fetch every 30 minutes.

Bluetooth only on when in the car.

Last and best results so far are, with 1% remaining:

    Standby time - 1 day, 21 hours

    Usage time - 9 hours, 55 minutes

Here's the image to show it

    http://db.tt/sBnD36Bm

I have achieved 2 days plus a few hours standby with about an hour less usage. I use mostly wifi but some 3G, mixed use, lots of emails, texts, some calls, music, game playing, browsing, twitter and Facebook.

    Very happy with the 4s

    89%

    Usage: 30 minuets

    Standby: 3 hours 44 minuets

    -_-

I'm very upset and fed up with this. I'm going to the Apple Store this weekend

    72%

    Usage: 1 hour, 20 minuets

    Standby: 5 hours, 29 minuets

If there is a hardware problem, I have a few questions:

    1. Will they just replace the battery in MY phone, or give me a whole new phone?

    2. If they give me a new phone, will they give me one right away, or will I have to wait for one?

    3. I'm worried about my ~1300 pictures and videos on my camera roll. If I get a new phone, I'll set it up as new, but how can I keep all my pictures?

    1. Probably just replace the battery.

    3. Backup in iTunes and use iCloud.

Hey Waynejd, just a quick question does your gmail really fetch every 30 minutes once you set it so? I have set mine to hourly but it seems to come at random timings (albeit rather quickly) that only gmail would know.

Oh and BTW I don't think turning off Siri's "Raise to Speak" actually disables the infrared sensor. You notice this by turning it off, make a phone call and raise your phone to your ear (OR just touch the part next to your front facing camera with your finger) and the screen will turn off. I believe this function is supposed to save battery life when you are making a call (esp. a long one).

Just curious what kind of usage are you actually doing? Like during the 1hr 20minutes what did you do with your phone?

if u turn off the location and icloud, some apps is useless and it doesnt make sense. whats the use of using iphone as smartphone if we're just going to turn off all the features of the celphone just to save the use of the battery.

Hi davidch.  After I reset settings, should I completely turn off/shut down phone before draining battery or not necessary?  Also, should I drain battery until dead or just under 10% or so?  I'm sure you may have gone through all this and, if so, I apologize.  I'm new to apple discussions & reading all this from my iPhone.  My eyes are burning :-)   Thanks!
