Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

For anyone new to the thread be sure to go through these steps to address the battery after updating to iOS 5.0.1:

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

    2. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd

    4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!

Can you put a post on here with the complete steps to take. I just updated my new phone to the 5.0.1. The phone was at a 100% on battery so I went ahead and reset the settings. From what I can see I am losing battery life pretty steady. As of right now here is what I am seeing on my usage screen.

39 minutes of usage with 3 hrs 40min standby and I'm at 86% on battery.

I do not have anything turneded on at all though. Suri is off completely, iCloud is off, no notifications are being pushed, I have used Facebook app once, and maybe 10 minutes of Internet usage. As I type this I have dropped down to 85% now. I want to see if you could list step by step the process to see if I might fix the problem.

Me, my friends, familes all carefully followed all your instructions provided. Still doesn't make a difference in regards to the pathetic battery life for any of us.

Note I've personally done everything you said 6 times already. Battery still drains like water going down the sink.

It seems you are extremely dissatisfied as you have already reported on many other support threads now. To have actually tried my process 6 times would have take 6 nights which i find hard to believe after reading all your negtive posts. Also, i don't understand how your friends and family actually have iPhone 4S phones since already stated in prevous postings that you had recommended them not buy them here:

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16746070#16746070

and with your remaining complaining posts here:

i think it would be best if actually have an iPhone 4S to return it, get your money back and move on...  good luck

Yes I spent countless nights trying to resolve the battery issues by reading suggestions from different forums including yours. How hard is that too believe? and yes some of my friends and families member did purchase the iphone 4s on the same day as me. That doesn't mean everyone I know has bought one.

Yes I am very dissatisfiy with the current state of the battery, considering I spent my hard earned money to buy product that is almost next to useless due not being able to do anything much on it without having to take the charger with me where ever I go.

Mate I wasn't having a go at your post. I'm just simply very frustrated. I been buying apple phones since the first generation, and have been happy with its use functionality etc... So I'm willing to give apple a few more weeks to see if they will release the 5.0.2 update, before I return it.

Either way, your "ranting" attitude on this and other threads is non-constructive and against Apple Support Forum polices (https://discussions.apple.com/static/apple/tutorial/tou.html).  I started this thread specifically to provide a solution, not create another "complain" session.  My process after installing the iOS 5.0.1 does fix the issue in most cases. I have personally performed and/or assisted over 10 direct users and seen numerous more successes now posted throughout this 30k+ viewed, 400+ posted thread.  If it does not fix the issue you most likely have a hardware issue and I recommend taking it to an Apple Store or associated carrier for review.

In notifications I have: weather, mail, calendar, reminders, phone, messages and Facebook.

Location services have maps, Siri, and weather on, with compass calibration and mobile network search in services.

I have iCloud and gmail accounts both set to fetch every 30 minutes.

Bluetooth only on when in the car.

Last and best results so far are, with 1% remaining:

    Standby time - 1 day, 21 hours

    Usage time - 9 hours, 55 minutes

I have achieved 2 days plus a few hours standby with about an hour less usage. I use mostly wifi but some 3G, mixed use, lots of emails, texts, some calls, music, game playing, browsing, twitter and Facebook.

    Very happy with the 4s

    wayne,

good to hear it worked out so well for you.  enjoy your phone!

    Usage: 4 hours, 49 minuets

    Standby: 16 hours, 9 minuets

I'm going to the Apple Store on Friday.

OK...I see promising results. My battery did hold 100% for a much longer period time. This is my second cycle, so hopefully things will get better from here.

I do want to ask, is it normal for a fully 100% battery to discharge itself when still plugged in? I am currently typing on it. It was 100% (with cable icon), then for a split second or a few minutes of use, it dropped from 99%, then back up to 100% with the charging icon.

I haven't really seen this with my other APPLE products (ex. MBP remains 100% (cable icon) when I am using it and is still plugged in.)

Hope it's not a hardware problem. Oh..now the battery is 100% (with cable icon, again).

I'm very upset and fed up with this. I'm going to the Apple Store this weekend

    72%

    Usage: 1 hour, 20 minuets

    Standby: 5 hours, 29 minuets

If there is a hardware problem, I have a few questions:

    1. Will they just replace the battery in MY phone, or give me a whole new phone?

    2. If they give me a new phone, will they give me one right away, or will I have to wait for one?

    3. I'm worried about my ~1300 pictures and videos on my camera roll. If I get a new phone, I'll set it up as new, but how can I keep all my pictures?

Go to the Apple store. They will check it out, and give you a replacement on the spot, if necessary. Before you go synch  through iTunes on your computer.  I assumed that your 1300 videos/photos came from your PC...but if they are on your 'camera roll', did you really take that many (1300) media events with your iPhone since you purchased the phone?

Anyhow, when and if you get a new    4S just synch with iTunes and it will restore from your  backup and you will not lose anything. They will not   change the battery on the spot , but more likely give you a new phone.

You seem to  get   4.5 hours consistently. I don't see that you have answered the question asked several times, what activities are you doing with the phone?

    Hey there Yi Jia

Hmmmm not sure about Gmail, it seems to be about 30 minutes as there is usually a stack coming through at once rather than one very minute or so - especially notice the bulk delivery with posts to this thread coming through!  It may be a little random, but for the most part about right.

Re: Siri and the proximity sensor - turning off raise to speak doesn't turn it off, but it does stop it being on almost all the time. If raise to speak is on it activates almost constantly to see if it is close to your face so it can activate Siri. If off, it only activates when you are on a call etc. I'm pretty sure that's how it works but happy to be corrected.
