Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

    davidch,

yesterday was my final full drain of my battery and now something seems to be the problem. I took my phone off the charger last night @ 100%. My usage was about 15 mins standby 1 hr and some.. and it dropped to 97% rather quickly. I woke up about 2 hrs later and it was on 95%. something seems to be wrong with my battery after this 3rd full drain after resetting all my settings. Ive gone to bed before woke up in 6-7 hrs and only lost maybe 2-3% in that time period. Is there something else i should do? I have a feeling is going to end up dying very fast today. I also noticed when my phone did full die yesterday, I had gotten less usage time (about an hr and a half) then the previous days. Thanks

Most of those pictures are from my iPhone 3G, which I've had since 2008, and I restored the backup to my new phone. I took all of them, and some are from the internet/text mesages (such as wallpapers).

I'm not doing anything out of the ordinary on my phone. I never play games, and (suprisingly) don't take many pictures throughout the day. I just use apps which require connection to 3G/Wi-Fi a lot. I don't belive I'm doing anything out of the ordinary.

Some apps I use frequently are:

    Facebook

    ESPN ScoreCenter

    MLB At Bat 2011

    Reader

    Safari

    and other similar apps

2-3% drop in 6-7 hr period sounds normal... that is less than 0.5% per hr.  the % meter can very from time to time.  also, you will rarely get the exact performance from day to day due to all the variables going on (networks strength, specific type of usage, etc).  over a few weeks that with a consistent typ of usage, it should be fairly consitent on an average basis.  i recommend not look at it to hard and just use it for a while.

to backup you pictures independently from an iTunes or iCloud backup follow these steps on PC or Mac

    PC

    1. Just plug in the device

    2. If iTunes comes up, Just exit the program once it finishes loading

    3. Open up Windows Explorer and look for iPhone drive letter mount (i.e. similar to how a USB memory card and external hard drive with some alpha letter mapped to it like D, E, F, etc)

    4.  Create a new folder in you pictures folder called "iPhone Pictures" or something similar

    5. Now, just select all your pictures from the iPhone mount drive letter and copy to your new folder

    Mac

    1. Just plug in the device

    2. If iTunes comes up, Just exit the program once it finishes loading

    3.  Create a new folder in you pictures folder called "iPhone Pictures" or something similar

    4. Open up the "Image Capture" located in the Applications folder and you should see all your pictures from the iPhone in a tiled viewer.

    5. Now, just select all your pictures from the iPhone in the viewer and download to your new folder

    Good luck!

    Davidch,

I'm curious as to why you give this advice, sidestepping iTunes.  And it raises a question I have been meaning to ask this group and you.  With 5.0 and 5.0.1 my battery life has been good. Following the reset setting procedure in this thread improved it even further.  Yesterday, I decided to use fetch to 1 hr instead of pushing my 3    email accounts.  The battery increase from that has been really good. 14 hours and I dropped to 94% (50% usage...a low day).  I'll go to push on the accounts when needed.  Too much mail from this thread!

But my question. When I need to synch to iTunes, I assume it will sink to my most recent phone settings, and I don't need to 'reset settings 'again.  That should be the way it works. Isn't that correct?

I hope that Apple  gets 5.0.2 out and fixes this for everyone soon.  I know that Tim Cook took an unusual step and gave everyone a week Thanksgiving's break (good idea). But this mucking around outside of official updates to the OS reminds me of    the 1990's when I left Apple, getting tired of my personal fixes. I haven't had to fool around with the iOS with any of my iPhones (3G,3GS, 4 and now 4S) and  those iOS's.

Not    complaining too loud, since I'm  in pretty good shape, but I feel for the other guys going through this.  And I also realize that it is only about  20% of user having these battery problems.  Something to keep in perspective as the  complaints roll in.

When I use Wi-Fi the whole day (like if I'm home the whole day) I can easily get around 7 hours of usage (by doing the calculations). But for some reason, when I did the calculations from my times when I'm out of the house for most of the day (and therefore using only 3G) I only get about 3-5 hours from the calculations. It shouldn't be that big of a difference. If I had my 'Wi-Fi battery" when I used the 3G, it would be perfect.

Going to the Apple Store is probably a good idea.  They can spec out your phone. Perhaps you 3G hardware is at fault, if you WIFI times are very good. Wifi does use less power, the apple specs for the 4S are:.

Internet use: Up to 6 hours on 3G, up to 9 hours on Wi-Fi

If you are getting 5 hours of intense internet ot 3G, maybe it is not so  bad. 3 hrs is a bit low.

By comparsions, what were your  3G usage times on your old iPhone 3G?  Some questions to think about.

If you are doing the normal things well on the 4S that you did on the 3G, I wouldn't OCD too much about it.  Each person will get different numbers based on their patterns.

But go to the apple store and see what they do.  They will give you a new phone...no one here can do that!

After I did this my contacts became somewhat disconfigured. When I would make a phone call for example to Mom Cell it would call and then when I would look in recent calls it would show up as the actuall numbers and not Mom Cell, how can I fix this, it has happened to a lot of my contacts.

I did the fixes, but it didn't work that much. Any one know why usage overnight is high?

    11:27pm go to bed

    Battery: 100%

    Usage: 36mins

    Standby: 59mins

    8:05am wake up

    Battery: 79%

    Usage: 5hrs 47mins

    Standby: 9hrs 37mins

Slept for ~8hrs and my phone was in use for over 5hrs?? What's going on??

    All apps were closed.

    Here's what I have on:

Notifications: Weather, Phone, Messages, Reminders, Calendar, Facebook, Mail, GMail

Location Services: Camera, Safari, Siri, Weather, Find Iphone

Mail: Push (Yahoo, Exchange for GMail)

Bluetooth is off, Wifi is on and I was connected

iCloud & Wifi Sync are On, but last Sync was when I charged before I went to bed.

I've been sitting today, turned my email to fetch. Usage still seems high.

To fix the contacts problem do this:

    1. dial *228 and press 1 to activate.

    2. Wait until call is finish and says "software update completed"

    3. Double tap the button and close Phone, Message apps.

    4 Wait 1min

    5. Now open your call logs or messages.

    6. It should now be fixed, some may still remain but if you get a call or dial, the proper name should show in the call log after. Just delete the old entries with just numbers.

    7. If it doesn't work fully, reboot the phone(turn off the regular way, wait 20sec and turn on).

    GOOD LUCK.

That worked! Thank you, my battery is still rapidly going down but I will let it drain out and then do a full charge and see what happens with my normal use. One more problem though, my iMessage is not working right now and I do not think any of my texts are going through, what is the fix for this? Thanks for your help and support.

Well don't think this worked for me. At least after the first battery drain and recharge and resetting of the phone. Here are the details so far and it does not appear to be good at all.

1hr 6min usage with 3 hr 28min standby and I'm at 64% on the battery. This is with almost everything turned off. The only location service that is on is Suri no Facebook and a little bit of Internet usage. Pretty pathetic numbers if you ask me. I should have stuck with the 5.0 and not updated to 5.0.1

Ok well here are my numbers and I am definitely not satisfied with this product from Apple.

3 hrs usage 6 hrs 3min standby and I'm at 18% on the battery. If anyone has some thoughts or ideas of how I can improve this please let me know. I pretty much have everything turned off except Suri.

It seems to be a syncing error loop. My contacts are syncing flawessly again between my devices and iCloud, and yes, the battery stopped draining, which is the main topic here.

I followed instructions from Buxbuster (look for his workaround in the thread link below) and an additional BIG step to restore contacts and syncing, as seen in a MacRumors forum.

    This is what I did:

    1. Make a backup of your Address Book, using the vCard option (or both, it doesn’t hurt). Save it for later.

    2. In your iPhone, delete iCloud account. When it asks, accept both: delete AND delete from my iPhone.

    3. Reset network settings. The iPhone will restart, then will ask you to unlock the SIM card.

    4.Turn Wi-Fi on.

    5. Add the iCloud account again.

That’s for Buxbuster’s workaround. For some, it might work just like that. My iPhone repopulated from iCloud after step 5, but I still had that “server error” on iCloud. I had to do some extra steps, since my Mac was not syncing to iCloud and couldn’t edit anything on my Mac or iCloud. Syncing back had to be fixed, too. If not, the syncing loop would continue from my iPhone, and the battery would drain awfully again.

    1. In System Preferences -> iCloud, I turned Contacts off. I chose “keep on My Mac” those contacts, but I got an empty Address Book after a while. And a few minutes later, iCloud contacts were empty and my iPhone also. It is scary at first! Now, before importing that vCard backup…

    2. Turn Wi-Fi off. This is important, since your contact-empty iCloud will attempt to wipe your Address Book from your Mac in seconds after importing.

    3. Import your vCard backup to Address Book. Just drag it to your blank Address Book window; it asks if you want to import “x” number of cards. Of course, say yes.

    4. Turn Wi-Fi on, and then iCloud contacts on again (System Preferences -> iCloud). It will offer to merge your newly populated Address Book with iCloud (which is empty at this point). It should upload every single contact to iCloud, and then to your iDevices. If not, a fifth step would be to import the vCard file to iCloud, but it shouldn’t be necessary.

So, with iCloud syncing working correctly, there is no battery draining! Again, that was my particular issue.

I can’t tell if this is the single answer to the widely spread battery draining problem, but it sure can be fixed with these workarounds, and yes, Apple should address the problem with a future update, for we affected customers don’t need workarounds in the first place

    This is the MacRumors discussion:

    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1256807

    And the other thread:

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3391947?tstart=0

Dont’ forget to check buxbuster’s fix, video, and THANK him!

    Regards,

    R.
