Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

to backup you pictures independently from an iTunes or iCloud backup follow these steps on PC or Mac

    Davidch,

I'm curious as to why you give this advice, sidestepping iTunes.

i am not trying to side step iTunes which only provides backup or importing/synching pictures (but no export).  this is just another normal way to get pictures off the phone (i.e. export) onto your file systme, etc.  you can also have export directly into iPhoto on Mac as another option.

But my question. When I need to synch to iTunes, I assume it will sink to my most recent phone settings, and I don't need to 'reset settings 'again.  That should be the way it works. Isn't that correct?

"reset all settings" has solved problems and issues on iPhones all the way to the original.  however, once you get your phone working well, i do recommend doing a full backup and resync (to make sure you now have a relatively clean backup for the future)

I hope that Apple  gets 5.0.2 out and fixes this for everyone soon.  I know that Tim Cook took an unusual step and gave everyone a week Thanksgiving's break (good idea). But this mucking around outside of official updates to the OS reminds me of    the 1990's when I left Apple, getting tired of my personal fixes. I haven't had to fool around with the iOS with any of my iPhones (3G,3GS, 4 and now 4S) and  those iOS's.

be careful what you read and hear.  the press will do whatever they can over the next few months to discount apple and tim cook (i.e. w/o steve jobs, etc) for a variey of corrupt reasons related to the equity/stock.  it will pass... apple had plenty of problems with every iPhone release (3G had connectivity and battery problems), (3GS had yellow screens) and (4... have you ever heard the term  "antennagate")

Not    complaining too loud, since I'm  in pretty good shape, but I feel for the other guys going through this.  And I also realize that it is only about  20% of user having these battery problems.  Something to keep in perspective as the  complaints roll in.

you can't be a "complainer"... you saw what i had to do to that last guy...

That worked! Thank you, my battery is still rapidly going down but I will let it drain out and then do a full charge and see what happens with my normal use. One more problem though, my iMessage is not working right now and I do not think any of my texts are going through, what is the fix for this? Thanks for your help and support.

Good luck with fixing the standby drain issue.  As far as messages, I have seeen a similar issue.  Just go to the "Messages" settings under the Settings app -> Messages.  Turn message off and turn it back on again.  In my case, it forced a reset of the Apple ID and phone number.  Everything has worked since.  Good Luck!

Ok well here are my numbers and I am definitely not satisfied with this product from Apple.

3 hrs usage 6 hrs 3min standby and I'm at 18% on the battery. If anyone has some thoughts or ideas of how I can improve this please let me know. I pretty much have everything turned off except Suri.

jrez... i would recommend you try it again.  be sure you "reset all settings" first then fully drain battery and then fully recharge in that order.  good luck

I was having some problems with my screen freezing up and an issue I mentioned in a another discussion.  So I reset my phone thinking this would clear up any problems if I had any.  I never had battery problems before the reset. Now I fear I may have cause a problem where there was none before.  And what’s really odd is that my usage and standby time are exactly the same time.

Can you explain what maybe happening?

Ok well I let the battery go to completely dead. Recharged to a 100% percent and reset the phone again. I'm still not seeing much by way of battery life. I'm at 1hr45 min usage with 4hr6min standby and I'm down to 64% battery. I wouldn't mind going back to 5.0. At least I could get 4 hrs of usage and over 24 on standby

I don't think you want to discharge/recharge and then reset. Reset first and then do the battery cycle. davidch correct me if I'm wrong, but resetting loses the battery calibration, so that should be done first.

that is correct.  it needs to be done in that exact order to work

continual screen freezing is very uncommon on iOS devices and it sounds like you may have a hardware problem.  i suggest you take it into apple store for review and possible replacment.  resetting settings is completed supported by apple to address possible corrupt settings and preferences.  it should not cause other isssues.  again, it sounds like you may have a hardware problem that may be related to the screen freezing issues and this is something apple can help you with and should be covered by warrantly.  good luck

For anyone new to the thread be sure to go through these steps to address the battery after updating to iOS 5.0.1:

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

    2. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd

    4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!

So you loose only 0.5%/hour on 3G??? I loose 4-5%!!! (and yes, I did the Settings Reset fix!)

Do you have iCloud on? Notification (like Facebook, ecc...), Push, ecc... ON or OFF?

Please, I need to understand where is the bug... :O

    Thanks.

I own an iPhone 4 and had no issues with iOS 5.0. I ran the over the air update for iOS 5.01 a couple nights ago and my battery has discharged from a full charge to less than 20% in the course 5 hours. I rebooted the phone, same issue. Trying the factory restore now, but not sure this will help based off of multiple comments all over the web. Any suggestions?
