Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

Ok here is the steps I took. Since I updated to 5.0.1 days ago I can not follow these steps exactly. Anyway, what I did was charge the battery to 100%. Today the battery got down to 5% I went to reset and reset all settings. Then let the battery drain til the phone cycled off. I placed the phone on charge for approx 5 hrs til it reached 100%. Here are my numbers as of now: 46 min of usage 3 hrs28min standby with the battery at 86%. If this is the correct process I do not see a significant increase. I have iCloud off, all notifications off, nothing pushing to me and all location services off. Guess I will try the process again to see if there is any help at all.

This seemed to do the trick with my phone.

I had a better battery life than others with 5.0. I then did the 5.01 update and it made my battery worse. I did this update today, and after following the steps for resetting the phone, it took me a really long time to try and kill the battery when it was at 50% when I had done this process. I had turned off wifi, and then I had Pandora running in the background while purposefully going to junk pages in Safari. Litterally took me 3+ hours to drain the battery.

Before I reset the settings, I was losing 1% almost every minute with browsing through Safari. Now it seems like my battery will go all day without problems.

That's great when knowing this processing.

    Hi,

Thanks everyone for their suggests. I followed the steps from numerous threads about the iPhone 4S battery life and I can only get 9+ hours maximum (as reported in the usage section of the phone) after 100% charge. I have removed everything from notifications, removed email accounts and only left my business critical email accounts with 'push' enabled, turned off location settings, data and usage reporting....almost everything I can think off; reset settings, stood on my head , sang Mary had a little lamb, got a rabbits foot...well now I am being silly, I know, but nothing has worked. Work up this morning  at 7:30am to find my phone powered off due to low battery and it was 100% charged at 8pm last night.

Thanks again to everyone for their suggestions, but if I have to turn of "features" then I beleive the iPhone 4s is 'not fit for purpose', it is going back to the shop.

    Cheers.

Get a replacement handset since you have tried everything. I'm beginning to worry about mine as well, yesterday I got 4hr usage and 10hr stand by. Now I'm back to turning things on and off..annoying.

I'm now seeing the charging bug some users reported. Where you leave your phone on charger overnight and wake up with a full "icon" at 94%! I've seen this two times now.

You're complaining about getting "only" 9 hours of usage? WOW. I can barley get 4.

When I went to the Apple Store yesterday, they told my my battery was normal, and to turn off Notifications and Location Services that are unnecessary. They also suggested to possibly restore the phone. I do have a lot of apps with both these things, but it's ridiculous to have to turn off all the features just to have a decent battery. I consistently only get about 4 hours of usage every day. Today after about an hour of usage, my battery was down to 75%. This is awful. I even had half of my apps' notifications turned off.

Guys, 5.0.1 definitely helped some. Davids solution has definately helped some. Apple is working on an update to further help. So while its frustraiting to have shorter than anticipated battery life remember it takes power to run all the features and items the iPhone 4s is capable of. Want a week of standby and lots of talk time, get a regular phone. Want all the cool features that smart phones are capable of (especially the iPhone4s) then realize it will require more frequent charges. Before I get slammed here, I do realize there is a problem and I had it until I did the update to 5.0.1.  That made a big difference for me. Does it last like my old Motorola Razr? No, but is it WAY cooler and more useful ? Of course! So I plug the dang thing in when I need to, typically at night when go to bed, and more during the day if I see I need to  (hadn't needed to since 5.0.1) And I am looking forward to the next iOS update that is slated to improve it to better than any smart phone ever. Again I get it that its frustraiting but be patient cause you probably have the best phone made to date.  I am conifident Apple is all over it. Thanks David for your contributions!  iOS 5.0.2 soon hopefully for the rest of you that have not seen better results.

Hi 'sflomenb', Sorry for not being concise, by usage I meant 'turned on', so to put it correctly it was in standby as I was asleep, i.e. I wasn't not using my phone. 8pm it was 100% charged, went to bed at 10pm (didn't use my phone at all.) and woke up at 7.30am to find my battery was flat. So that is about 9 or so hours of 'standby'. If I use my phone I would be lucky to get 5 to 6 hours out of it tops, so I know excatly what you are going through.

Like 'ram130', turning features on and off just to get battery life is absolutely ridiculous. I am in business I can't spend time worrying about a phone so it doesn't go flat! My iPhone 4 with iOS 5.0.1 would go for about 2-3 full days of regular usage, 5 emails accounts fetching and send email, browsing the web, sending SMS, voice calls, voice messages, location services on, notification services on (and AB!) - you name it, I was doing it. As additional proof, my wife's iPhone 4 has iOS 5.0.1, which she got the same time as my iPhone 4, runs for about 4-5 days before getting to 20% of remaining battery life. She doesn't use it much anymore becuase she brought an iPad, but that iPhone 4, like mine, is like chalk and cheese compared to my iPhone 4S.

It shouldn't come down to the end user having to worry about their phone, like I never had to worry about my iPhone 4. I never had to worry about checking the battery level before I left the office, but now I have to with my 4S and I have it plugged in all the time to make sure I don't get caught with a flat battery halfway though my day when I get called out of the office.

Cheers everyone and good luck, and if you decide to stick with your 4S then I hope the next iOS patch improves things.

I was not getting great battery life on the 4s. I did the settings reset.  Set up as new phone and drained and recharged the battery to 100%. As of right now 31 mins of usage and 12 hrs 57 min. Standby. Notifications- weather, phone, messages and reminders. 95% battery left. Does that sound ok?

    Thanks

    Davidch,

I think there is some phantom usage going on with my phone. I do run wifi all night because i read somewhere that will help your battery because the 4S constantly looks for cell service.

This was my usage at night. My phone was on standby for about 3 hrs before it started to run down from 100%. I also noticed at this point that there was some phantom usage going on because i only used my phone for maybe 15-20 mins and the numbers read for than that.

As of 1 hr ago these are what my numbers looked like. im at 88% now. so i guess you can say my battery went down about 1%. Im really convinced there is some sort of phantom usage going on. I went through my phone and cleared cookies, deleted some apps, etc to see if maybe there was an app i downloaded was constantly running in the background or something.

I've seen the same phantom usage but I'm happy it's not as worst as some users here. Mine is the same as yours though. Just relax, at least it's not like Android battery life in stand by where they loose 40% in 16hours.
