Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

Well battery life seems better. I did a bump charge for 10mins and got a extra 5% while playing music but otherwise i would be down -5%. Anyway I listen music for a hour via headphones, I was in a no service area for a hour where I also read some news, did some light browsing, made a one hour phone call and sent 200 texts. I am now convinced bluetooth is draining more battery life than it should on days I use it.

I think I figure out my battery draining issue overnight. Before I was losing 20% over night, and the usage was high even while sleeping.

Turning off all Location Services makes the battery last.

    Night 1: Battery 35%, Usage 3hrs 30mins, StandBy 13hrs 45mins

    Next Morn: Battery 27%, Usage 3hrs 42mins, StandBy 20hrs 31mins

    Night 2:  Battery 69%, Usage 1hr 57min, StandBy 11hrs 23min

    Next Morn: Battery 63%, 2hrs 10 mins, StandBy 20hrs 34mins

The Location Services I had on were: Camera, Maps, Siri, Weather, Find My iPhone

Pretty sure there must be a bug in Location Services or one of them that causes high usage and batter drain.

    Bad Apple, Bad!

Ok after the 3rd time of going through the resetting process this is where I stand.

2 hr 4 min of usage 3hr 46 min of standby and I'm at 69% on the battery. Th whole time I've been in a wifi area so it seems to me that the draining is excessive. The other thing is that my battery gets hot while charging and at time when in use it heats up some. Does the usage sound about right compared to the battery drain?

@devidch, thank you very much, i done all the steps , and now charging My iPhone4 overnite, I hope it will work to optimal now, during going through this blog i under stand this whole procedure to be done few times...? is it? if yes how many times.

#2 ) after this charge can i connect iphone to my mac book? will there be possibility to again sync all old settings?

#3) I noticed that during roaming I mean when we moove place to place rate of battery drain is bit faster than we are stationary... is it?

you should be able to sync again, but i would wait and see how everthing goes after my process is done.  if succesfull, i recommed you then connect iTunes.  this should backup the fixed system and resync any changes.

I was not getting great battery life on the 4s. I did the settings reset.  Set up as new phone and drained and recharged the battery to 100%. As of right now 31 mins of usage and 12 hrs 57 min. Standby. Notifications- weather, phone, messages and reminders. 95% battery left. Does that sound ok?

    Thanks

yes... this sounds ok.  enjoy you iPhone

    Davidch,

I think there is some phantom usage going on with my phone. I do run wifi all night because i read somewhere that will help your battery because the 4S constantly looks for cell service.

This was my usage at night. My phone was on standby for about 3 hrs before it started to run down from 100%. I also noticed at this point that there was some phantom usage going on because i only used my phone for maybe 15-20 mins and the numbers read for than that.

    photo(2).PNG

As of 1 hr ago these are what my numbers looked like. im at 88% now. so i guess you can say my battery went down about 1%. Im really convinced there is some sort of phantom usage going on. I went through my phone and cleared cookies, deleted some apps, etc to see if maybe there was an app i downloaded was constantly running in the background or something.

90% battery after 16 hrs standby, 48 minutes usage.  0.5% loss an hr standby would get you to 92%.  another 2% for the usage.  this sounds normal to me.  enjoy your phone

12% battery after 26 hrs standby, 6 hrs usage.  this seems good to be ram130

jrez.  how well does it hold up when just in standby.  also, next time just recharge completely w/o letting it drain (i.e. start around 40% or so) overnight.  good luck.  once the calibration starts to work well, it seems to get better to me. i have not used my phone the last day or so (home and off work).  current stats are:

    Battery 46%  Standby: 2 days, 5 hrs   Usage 2 hrs, 30 min

@davidch, I took it of charge this morning about 5 and it was in standby mode for approx 6 hrs and I lost about 15%. I still do not have hardly any extras running. Ill try charging it tonight without draining and see what happens. I'm at 3hr 8mins usage and 6hr 30min with 54% on the battery. Im still only getting about 6hrs usage a dim in a wifi area the whole day so I still don't think this is good battery use but I could be wrong. Not sure what this compares to with others and how they are doing.

Hey David, I have done your procedure and it worked, but my usage was continually high during the night.

I will try and turning Location Services back on, but turn off "Find My iPhone" and see if that makes a difference.

But, my old 3GS (which is now an iPod for all purposes) has Location Services on and doesn't have this problem.

I've "Reset All" on my 4S twice and drained. I just think it is a bug in Location Services, but not sure what/where.

Hi, well I'm back! I must say that after the frustration last night and before heading off to the shop today,  I decided to do another complete phone reset and let the phone charge up to 100% then I went and tuned the phone with the three settings only that I made particular attention to, with thanks going to davidch!

After reset and 100% charge, I left iCloud disabled; turned of cell network search; set my carrier manually; and left Siri disabled.

I have everything else up and running including push and fetch email, notifications (all) , location services (excluding cell network search as I said) although I am yet to setup sync with iTunes, but I can tell everyone that I have lost only 15% of battery life after 9+ hours including a few phone calls and wifi.

More testing needed but I too believe that something gets stuck and canes the battery to no end, which I never experienced with my iphone4.

I will be in touch, thanks again.

    Hi everybody,

New here, and new iPhone user.

I must admit that I was a bit worry about buying iPhone after all that battery problems discussions around but decided to give it a go and...

Got it on Friday evening, T-mobile Croatia and first impressions was good, but then I get in the area without 3G signal, meaning phone was using EDGE and battery was draining with the speed of light. During almost 3 hours it dropped from 86% - 8%...

Location servics off, SIRI off, WiFi on.
