Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

@devidch, i done procedure, after all step charged phone , I am always be optimistic, and product like apple cant be wrong, i may be expecting lott from it. I mean now i dont use it to listen music also, forgeot about all other apps, I use it as normal phone , so now i am happy , because in late evening when i return from my work i atleast can make a call and can recive it either.

i think here in india where there is no seamless network of 3g, apple and phone is always hunting for some network , so battery drain shall be more anyways i find a solution atlast, thank you . i hope apple shall come up with some real solution.

i am repeting your procedure again today, but then i didn find any logical probabilty of doing this again, though we shall always hope some good happen by repeting and practice.

Ok, so the suggestions provided for doing a factory reset fixed the issue. I know many people that have the iPhone 4 (not the 4S) and they all have not had the issue with the upgrade, but they have all done the upgrade through tethering/iTunes and not OTA. I suspect that the OTA update made some sort of network connection that got "stuck" somewhere. I am no iOS developer, but that is my guess. I won't go into the boring details of my usage or drain, but I can say for certain that the reset did fix my issue. Huge, HUGE improvement. My 2 cents.

    Thanks for the help guys!

Hey David, I have done your procedure and it worked, but my usage was continually high during the night.

I will try and turning Location Services back on, but turn off "Find My iPhone" and see if that makes a difference.

But, my old 3GS (which is now an iPod for all purposes) has Location Services on and doesn't have this problem.

I've "Reset All" on my 4S twice and drained. I just think it is a bug in Location Services, but not sure what/where.

Let us know if it helped your standby to turn of Find My iPhone.  Thanks.

For anyone new to the thread be sure to go through these steps to address the battery after updating to iOS 5.0.1:

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

    2. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd

    4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!

An update. I think I found my "during sleep usage & battery drain" issue.

I turned on Location Services like David has on. I left "Find my iPhone On", but went to "System Services" at the bottom of Location Services.

I turned off everything except Traffic and Cell Network Search. And my battery is great, as is the usage.

I'm guessing "Diagnostics & Usage" is the culprit.

    Last Night 11:58pm

    Battery 92%, Usage 26mins, StandBy 2hrs 31mins

    This Morning 8:15am

    Battery 86%, Usage 38mins, StandBy 10hrs 48mins

So 6% over 8 hrs, which is my best so far. Yay!

Email is on Push, Notifications are on (weather, phone, messages, calendar, mail, reminders).

Location Services is on (camera, maps, weather)

i tried the systems reset, started as new phone, didn't connect to itunes, drained until it shuts off and charged to 100%.

    usage: 6hours, 33minutes

    standby 8 hours, 53 minutes

just some texting and internet browsing.  no youtube or phone calls.

i have 7% battery life left. no bluetooth or anything.

it isn't any better than before.

going to try it again tonight and see if it helps.

    Sure!

I did it three times, but no effect...

In my opinion, there is something wrong going on in background that drains the battery (and that's why the "Usage" stat is way higher than the real usage time...).

Maybe my settings are different from yours, and the bug is there.... :\

I just tried another method (from another user here in the Apple Support Forum)... Tomorrow I'll be out town all day, so I'll definitely find out if this works!

    Here is the quote:

    "

Sob...I solved my phantom usage issues (for me it was necessary to: turn off siri raise to speak + reset, logoff appstore, remove all accounts including icloud, reset network settings and then re-add).

Now my drain in 1-2% hr or less (in standby, no difference if I use wifi or cellular data), but when I use the iPhone (checking mail, surfing web) the battery drains very fast."

    (source: https://discussions.apple.com/message/16835410#16835410)

    nano,

ok and corrupt mail accounts with hung messages, etc can cause unexpected battery drain.  deleting you email accounts and recreating them can fix it in most cirucstances.  also, you may want to turn off some of you iCloud stuff temporarily to see if that may be an issue.  i am currently using just mail and reminders, but plan to add more next week.

Things here seems to be much better now... My standby usage is no more 6%/hour.

I have lost 10% in 8 hour, this night... It seems good to me!

Anyway, I'm not 100% happy yet...

On sunday I was in a low signal area, and I've lost 10% in the first hour, and 3% in the next hours... (and my phone was in a bag, so really no usage...)

I really hope that 5.0.2 will fix all of theese bugs...

    Hi,

Just letting you know that my iphone4S now seems ok after the last reset (yesterday) I have just sync'ed it with iTunes so here's hoping. If this goes well then tomorrow night I will re-enable Siri.

Anyway, I thought people might like to look at this...http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=8381626

    Bye for now.

Hi I have two 4s now, One white 32GB and One Black 64GB. Even After updating to 5.0.1 the white one seems still to have a problem. Both are configured in the same way, the black has more accounts but. The white one is loosing much faster battery. I charged it to 100% and after 4 hours without using and display turned off battery is down to 86%. The other one get off 5 % with some usage which seems to be normal. So comparing to iPhones I am pretty shure the white one has a problem. What to do?

    Thanks for the tips.

My 4S seems to be draining much more slowly after following your advice. I seem to be getting at least 3 days of light to moderate use out of it.
