Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

I don't understand how you guys are getting such good battery with your phones. My battery is still awful as usual:

    34%

    Usage: 3 hours, 2 minuets

    Standby: 10 hours, 11 minuets

Apple said it was "normal" and to turn off Notifications and Location Servies for apps I don't need them for, and that has done absolutley nothing. They also told me to restore my phone. I wish they would just give me a completley new phone, which would probably solve all these problems.

Today my battery dropped 6% after 10 minuets of usage.

I don't know what to do anymore.

Did you follow the reset tip? Also take a look here for more info .https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3526981  Nice compilation of tips and things to check. The reset/battery drain seems to be the best option for now.

The file is correct. The questions that remain are:

    1. Who's going to back up there phone and try it.

    2. How is battery life on it compared to 5.0, 5.0.1?

I've not seen any reports on the above yet ..

    Update to my status...

Battery was charged overnight from 9% to 100% and lasted 2 days. I put it to charger last night when it was on about 20% and again charged it to 100% overnight. Now I'm at 98% after 3 hours with no usage of phone at all...

Firmaware is 5.0.0 that came with phone as I don't dare to upgrade it to 5.0.1...

So, i was guessing if the "Automatically send" option in the diagnostics data settings, is also a culprit.

Rather i think, it should send data only once in a day, if connected online.

    Hey davidch,

Nice to see that many users got their issue resolved through your post.

I have the same problem of battery drain but on a higher side. 2-3% every 20 mins.

Tried the "Reset all settings" 2 times now, but yet to drain the battery and do full recharge.

Can you tell me how long to charge the battery after draining it out?

I have already resetted the settings and chose "select as new phone" option (don't remember the exact name)

    Regards!

I'm not David but will attempt to answer your question . Drain it until the spinning star comes on and the phone shuts down. Then charge it til it gets to 100%. Leave it on maybe an hour after the 100%. As for time it takes, well sounds like the discharge will be pretty quick. The full charge is like maybe 2 or 3 hours from total dead  if I recall.

This is as important as the reset all settings as it calibrates the software to match the actual battery life.

I have just done a battery rundown test of my iphone whilst using it as i normally would:

Wifi always on, 3G always on

Siri off, diags off, system services off except for traffic and compass calibration

These are my results with 6% battery life remaining:

33.2% (1 day 3 hrs) has been lost on standby where only 13.5% should have been lost.

16% (13 hrs) was lost overnight on standby.

59.8% has been used for** (6 hrs 20 mins).

3% has been used for calls over 3G (13 mins 2 secs).

**texts, browsing over wifi and 3G, reading emails, YouTube, e-reader app.

    As you can see with the results above, my iPhone 4s 32gb 5.0.1 is running fine except for one thing;

The standby is half of what it should be. I am losing over 1% an hour where I should be losing only 0.5% an hour

So apple, please do something about the standby time!!!!

Note: 80% of the time I was in an area of full coverage (4-5 bars). And the wifi was also at 100%.

I believe majority of post is about the standby time, so there must definitely be something on when the phone is on standby!!!

i tried the systems reset, started as new phone, didn't connect to itunes, drained until it shuts off and charged to 100%.

    usage: 6hours, 33minutes

    standby 8 hours, 53 minutes

just some texting and internet browsing.  no youtube or phone calls.

i have 7% battery life left. no bluetooth or anything.

it isn't any better than before.

going to try it again tonight and see if it helps.

    *****

Sorry to hear it did not fix.  Try a couple of more times and if no success, I recommend taking it to Apple for review

Hi I have two 4s now, One white 32GB and One Black 64GB. Even After updating to 5.0.1 the white one seems still to have a problem. Both are configured in the same way, the black has more accounts but. The white one is loosing much faster battery. I charged it to 100% and after 4 hours without using and display turned off battery is down to 86%. The other one get off 5 % with some usage which seems to be normal. So comparing to iPhones I am pretty shure the white one has a problem. What to do?

    Reinhard,

Did you try my process below.  Be sure to follow in order and step by step.  Good Luck

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

    2. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd

    4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!
