Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

    Thanks for the tips.

My 4S seems to be draining much more slowly after following your advice. I seem to be getting at least 3 days of light to moderate use out of it.

Good to hear it is working out for you.  Enjoy your phone

Thanks for the tip! My iPhone 4 was draining about 3% during a 7-8 hour period while I was asleep, then skyrocketed to 8-10% after 5.0 and 5.0.1. I just reset all settings this afternoon, and the phone only drained 2% in 5 hours! I'm letting the battery drain coimpletely, then I'll do a full recharge. Thanks again!

    Hi Davidch,

I just followed your step.  After I reset all the setting the battery remaining percentage was 5%, after 3 hours of standby the battery is still 5%. Comparing to earlier today before following your steps my phone was draining 1% for each 30 minutes standby.  If using the phone for e.g. texting, 3G for a few minutes, I can see the battery draining 1% per minute. Now I am recharging my battery to full recharge and will see whether it is improved or not.

However, I have some questions.  This is my first iphone (I bought 4s).  I really have no ideas whether my phone battery is OK or not. So here is the statistics:

    Usage: 4 Hours 7 Minutes

    Standby 14 Hours, 32 Minutes

    Battery Percentage left: 21%

    Talked time: 7 Minutes

    IOS 5.0.1

I have turned off everything: no push mail, location services, notifications, SIRI, bluetooth, wifi, cellular data etc. Is my battery OK?  This statistics is just before I reset the all the settings.  After I reset, the standby time is 1 day and the battery remaining is 1%.

    Thanks for your answer.

    Guys,

Good News!!! In fact Great News!!

After I did the "Reset phone settings"  --> Battery drain to NIL --> Recharge to FULL --> + 2-3 hours of more recharge, I am getting a significantly HIGH improvement.

Almost 7 hours now on STANDBY and battery still at 100%  (can't believe it... )

Earlier it was draining like 20-25 % in 4 hours.

This is huge improvement!! I think my battery problem is solved.

Keeping fingers crossed for some more time now...so to check if the battery works normally with the Wifi, location services, and other stuff.

sflomenb, the process is on page 1 of this thread. However here is another thread with a noice compilation of tips to help battery without having to dig through a million posts. The reset info  from DavidH is what seems to help the most people. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3526981

Also a reset without doing the erase all will not delete your apps and contacts and such so no restore is required actually. So follow as stated and you will need to add your wi-fi settings and "who you are" for siri on the 4s but otherwise your stuff will remain. Good luck!

    Davidch,

My phone battery drained really fast yesterday into today. I will attach my stats.. I would say i used it moderately. more than i normally do but still not what i would consider to be heavy use. SHould i do another settings reset or full battery drain? I did 3 of them last month at the end of the month.

This is what my battery usually gets and has been getting for a few weeks

i only get a day or a day and a half.. some ppl get three days of battery life. whats the point in having a smart phone if you have to turn all the features off. defeats the whole purpose.

Guys, I would have to say that multiple resets every few days is not going to help the situation. Also a battery drain and recharge constitutes a "cycle" so you are really just wearing out your battery doing this over and over. Pretty much "A" reset should be clearing any corruption in software its probably not going to help to keep doing it over and over. Clearly there is something else going on. Maybe an app you are using or could actually be a faulty phone. Perhaps for troubleshooting sake you erase all content in the reset settings area and restore to factory settings (this will loose all your data so backup first with iTunes or iCloud). and see how the battery does afterwards WITHOUT restoring your backup. Also maybe turn off the timezone location and iAds in the system settings tab under location.  IF it still dont help then maybe a trip to Apple is in order to fix faulty device. Otherwise if it works then add things back one at a time to see what may be the offending application.

    chaboogie,

A day and a half is pretty good battery life for any smart phone. I guess it really comes down to choosing do you want features available with a smart phone or do you just want to "save your charger" and only use it once or twice a week?  I mean unless you are in the woods camping or something just plug it in. Not to start anything here but come on folks whats the problem with just plugging in your phone every night when you go to bed?  While I am sure some are in fact having a few issues with battery it just makes no since why folks state (when I wake up my phone had dropped x percent and almost dead. Well plug it in every day while you sleep and in the morning you start with a fresh full charged device to enjoy all day.  Anyone thinking the days when you had a phone that you charged once a week still exist with a full featured phone  are just mistaken. All those features require power. And before I get beat up, yeah they could put a bigger battery but then folks would complain how big the phone is.

So again not to ruffle any feathers here but if you can get a full day's use with a smartphone be happy and just enjoy your phone.

    That's right!

For me davidch's method wasn't the solution... I really started seeing better battery results, only after I did theese steps (and I'm not sure which one actually did the trick... ):

    - Delete all the mail accounts.

    - Turn off iCloud.

    - Log out from the AppStore.

    - Do a Network Settings Reset

    - Add all again.

    Also:

    - Turn off Siri's raise to speak (If you have already OFF, then turn it ON, then OFF again, then do a hard reset).

    - Turn off iTunes Wifi Sync.

    Hope it helps.

    Bye!

P.s: note that I didn't find this method out by myself, I've found it on another discussion on this forum!
