Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

Ok guys... I did my 5th "reset" today. I hope it works. Probably not at this point

as i mentioned in early threads, if  reset all settings, full discharge, full recharge process does not work by the 3rd try, you likely have some other issue...  good luck

    Hi Davidch,

I just followed your step.  After I reset all the setting the battery remaining percentage was 5%, after 3 hours of standby the battery is still 5%. Comparing to earlier today before following your steps my phone was draining 1% for each 30 minutes standby.  If using the phone for e.g. texting, 3G for a few minutes, I can see the battery draining 1% per minute. Now I am recharging my battery to full recharge and will see whether it is improved or not.

However, I have some questions.  This is my first iphone (I bought 4s).  I really have no ideas whether my phone battery is OK or not. So here is the statistics:

    Usage: 4 Hours 7 Minutes

    Standby 14 Hours, 32 Minutes

    Battery Percentage left: 21%

    Talked time: 7 Minutes

    IOS 5.0.1

I have turned off everything: no push mail, location services, notifications, SIRI, bluetooth, wifi, cellular data etc. Is my battery OK?  This statistics is just before I reset the all the settings.  After I reset, the standby time is 1 day and the battery remaining is 1%.

    Thanks for your answer.

0.5% drain per hour in standy is normal.  stats also look ok

i only get a day or a day and a half.. some ppl get three days of battery life. whats the point in having a smart phone if you have to turn all the features off. defeats the whole purpose.

    chaboogie,

a day and half with with over 5 hrs usage seems normal to me.  anyone getting much over 2 days with any normal amount of usage is beyond normal in my experience with any iPhones.  i have had several iPhones now and getting a good solid day with normal usage and/or 2 days with lighter usage has been pretty much the norm.  your stats look good to me.  this also pretty much falls within apple's spec and expectations, imho.  tgif

A day and a half is pretty good battery life for any smart phone. I guess it really comes down to choosing do you want features available with a smart phone or do you just want to "save your charger" and only use it once or twice a week?  I mean unless you are in the woods camping or something just plug it in. Not to start anything here but come on folks whats the problem with just plugging in your phone every night when you go to bed?  While I am sure some are in fact having a few issues with battery it just makes no since why folks state (when I wake up my phone had dropped x percent and almost dead. Well plug it in every day while you sleep and in the morning you start with a fresh full charged device to enjoy all day.  Anyone thinking the days when you had a phone that you charged once a week still exist with a full featured phone  are just mistaken. All those features require power. And before I get beat up, yeah they could put a bigger battery but then folks would complain how big the phone is.

So again not to ruffle any feathers here but if you can get a full day's use with a smartphone be happy and just enjoy your phone.

completely agree.  my process just addresses a software issue that abnormally drains any iOS device running 5.0.1 primarily in standby mode.  in most instances users with standby drain of 2-4% per hr or more can be reduced to 0.5% per hr or less.  if it does not fix the issue after 1-3 tries, you likely have some other software issue (i.e. stuck/corrupt email, etc) or a hardware issue and need to take the unit in for review.  Otherwise, you have a good phone.  Enjoy it.

I have followed DavidCH's instructions and had pretty good luck improving my battery life since I upgraded to iOS 5.0.1.  The biggest help has been doing a Reset All Settings reset and then fully draining the battery and fully recharging it a few times.

But I still felt that I could be getting better battery life even though I could go a full day, 6 am till midnight, with what is normal usage for me, i.e. 10 - 12 phone calls, some web surfing, manually check email every couple of hours, playing about 30 - 40 minutes of some of my games, IMDB searches, facebook and twitter checks a couple times a day, check the weather in the AM before leaving the house, reading iBooks or Kindle books, for about 30 minutes at the end of the day.  Doing all this without any time spent on the charger during the day left me at about 20 - 25% battery life left.  I would then watch a couple of YouTube videos to fully drain the battery if I was going to do a full drain and recharge cycle as this really seems to condition the battery and battery meter (Which I think is probably a culprit in this whole problem).  But as I said I thought I should be getting better life than this even. You know, new phone new battery using only the minimum number of notifications and locations.

Yesterday I spent the day in a training room in the building I work in that appears to have much better 3G reception than I do at my desk (My desk is next to a window facing north in the AT&T center in Los Angeles, pretty ironic isn't it?)  Anyway, I walked to the training room on the west side of the building on the same floor, less than 300 feet from my desk and managed to get 3 - 5 bars all day long.  And guess what, I had 85% battery left at 4 in the afternoon!!!  I obviously wasn't using my phone as much being in a training class, but I did do some emails, web searches, etc.

My guess is that since I was getting a much stronger signal the phone didn't have to keep checking for a 3G connection (See my rant about why did Apple take away the option to turn off 3G on the iPhoen 4S) So without having to constantly search out a 3G connection, the battery didn't take the pounding it does at my desk where I get 1 - 2 bars of service when the phone doesn't drop out of 3G altogether and start searching for a 3G connection, over and over and over.

Back at my desk today and I am seeing 1 - 2 % drain just sitting on my desk not being used.

At home I have an AT&T MicroCell so I don't have the 3G search problem.  I apparently whined enough to the customer services reps that I was one of the lucky ones to get a free MicroCell so this is a perk for me.

Thanks for the tip! My iPhone 4 was draining about 3% during a 7-8 hour period while I was asleep, then skyrocketed to 8-10% after 5.0 and 5.0.1. I just reset all settings this afternoon, and the phone only drained 2% in 5 hours! I'm letting the battery drain coimpletely, then I'll do a full recharge. Thanks again!

    Lucas,

good to hear it is working out for you already.  the full discharge and recharge should even impove things more.  good luck.

    Guys,

Good News!!! In fact Great News!!

After I did the "Reset phone settings"  --> Battery drain to NIL --> Recharge to FULL --> + 2-3 hours of more recharge, I am getting a significantly HIGH improvement.

Almost 7 hours now on STANDBY and battery still at 100%  (can't believe it... )

Earlier it was draining like 20-25 % in 4 hours.

This is huge improvement!! I think my battery problem is solved.

Keeping fingers crossed for some more time now...so to check if the battery works normally with the Wifi, location services, and other stuff.

    (iPhone 4S 64 GB iOS 5.0.1)

sounds great... enjoy you phone and have good weekend

Ok after doing this process several times I decided to take my phone to Apple store. Of course these people act like they have no idea that there are issues with the IPhone and the battery. Anyway after they did a diagnostic that found nothing they went ahead and wiped my phone out and reinstalled the software. And what do you know the battery issue is fixed! Ya, not so much. I am still having excessive battery loss. Or what I deem excessive. Here is what my phone is showing right now:

Took the phone off the charger at 430 am@ 100%

    Usage shows 2hrs 8mins

    Standby 10hrs 50mins

    Battery is at 47%

Now can anyone tell me if this is about average. I have no idea anymore what is supposed to be good and what isn't.

    hi david,

sorry to bother you.  i've done the reset settings two more times.

    battery 8%

    usage 7hrs 42min

    standby 17 hours, 3 minutes.

probably 40 minutes of talk time.

is seems improved.  however, my phone has been off the charger for only 17 hours total.... not the ~25 the above apple numbers add up to.  is this sounds right to you?

once again, we all appreciate your help.

Ok... It looks like my battery has definitely increased. Nowhere NEAR as close to the battery you guys get here, but it has looked better than normal today (my 5th settings reset process)

    About 11:00 pm:

    21%

    Usage: 4 hours, 47 minuets

    Standby: 16 hours, 0 minuets

    My best stats are

    Standby  : 1day und 8 hour

    Usage: 20hour

with Airplane Modus ON over night

But the usage counter is ********.

    i hear 2h music, make a 4 Min.Call and a little bit Webbrowsing and E-Mail checking

so i used the iphone not over 3hour but the count says over 20hour

    Why???

    But!

After a fullcharge without a SIMCard

    - Airplane Modus ON

    - WI-FI OFF

    - Location Service OFF

    - Time Adjustment OFF

    - PUSH OFF

    - Bluetooth OFF

    - SIRI ON   Raise to Speak OFF

    The Stats are fine

    Usage: 26Min

    Standby: 11 hour 26 Min

    Akku: 100%

    duration: 29.11.11 20:41 - 30.11.11 7:57

After a fullcharge with an unlocked SIMCard

    - Airplane Modus ON

    - WI-FI OFF

    - Location Service OFF

    - Time Adjustment OFF

    - PUSH OFF

    - Bluetooth OFF

    - SIRI ON   Raise to Speak OFF

    the stats are poor

    Usage: 3 hour 48 Min.

    Standby: 11 hour 33Min

    Akku: 88%

    25.11.11 20:50 -26.11.11 8:23

i have one IMAP Account and icloud

i hope a new simcard is the solution

Hey,. iv read and did all types of settings and resets etz... Still have crap battery time.

Im just sick of it,. I mean this is a APPLE product. we shouldendt be needing to do all this. Thats why we love apple ! , it should just work as a dream right out of the box.

I buy this phone because I want all these functions as email, icloud, gps, internet etz. But if I use these my battery needs recharging at lunchtime. Why have these functions when you cant use them without recharging 2-3 times a day.

I belive this is a major issue for apple and really hope they do drastic fixes. My buddy has the HTC desire S and after dinner time when im recharging hes at 75%.

So if this isent fixed I will sadly be forced to leave the iphone family.

So Peter, you have tried the reset procedure described by Davidch? Other options I would recommend is resetting to default and not loading any 3rd party apps. See how the battery performs then. If better then there is likely some app you have killing it. Otherwise if it cant run with Apple default apps then there is a problem. Also I have read folks have had good results dong the DFU update.  That is basically a firmware reflash. You can google that and see the procedure. May be worth a try before you go back to Apple for a replacement or refund.
