Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

yes... it will reboot and you will go through initial setup process like when you first get the phone (i.e. choose lang,  setup wifi, enable location services, enable Siri, etc).  toward the end you will have choice to "setup new phone", "restore from iCloud backup", or "restore from iTunes backup".  choose "setup new phone".  again, all you data, apps, mail, etc will still be there like before.  it is a little confusing terminology, but hope that helps.

    Hello David,

I fOllowed the instruction above on my wife's iPhone 4S but there's no option to setup new phone or restore from iCloud, etc. after I setup all the normal settings like you mentioned, it just went to the normal screen.

Would be good if you have a screen shot. I know it'll be troublesome but it'll help alot.

    Thanks.

Can it be true??? Did it work?  Just finished the complete discharge/recharge and it's looking pretty good.  Time will tell.

Also, the *228 reprogramming for Verizon to fix my contacts worked too!

    Thank you all!  Especially Davidch!

that should be ok... one other poster also mentioned that screen did not come up but have not seen that myself.  i think it was right before the "start using your iPhone" screen but not exactly sure.  anyway, as long as your basic system settings have been reset.  You may want to try "reset all settings" one more time to be sure.  if it is the same the second time, i would recommend just going a head and do the battery recalibration (fully discharge and recharge) and see if it fixes your battery standby drain

Question - I am on the 4s. I updated to 5.0.1 on Thursday.  Right now my battery is at 75%. Standby is 20 hours and 58 minutes. Usage is just 1 hour and 14 minutes (no calls, just email, Facebook, etc.).  Does this sound pretty good?

It's much better than my old 3G, athough I do notice the battery drops a few percentage points each time I use it.

I think that is good.  So for a 1/4 of the battery you have 21 hrs standby with say 1 hr of usage.  To me that looks extrapolate to somewhere around 80hrs or about 3 days standby with 4 hrs usage.  If I could get that I would be very happy. Currently I am ok charging overnight. Before the last hard reset I did this weekend, I was getting about 18 hrs standby with 4 hrs usage (almost all emails reading and writing) at 40% battery.  That is with fetch on emails at 30 minutes.

After doing the update to 5.0.1 I noticed my battery was draining almost twice as fast. So I did what the apple care tech told me to do. That was to turn off my iPhone and plug it into iTunes while holding the power and home button, releasing the power button at 8 seconds and waiting for the restore pop up option in iTunes. Then just set up iPhone as new. It still didn't fix my issue so I tried resetting all settings. Still the battery drains al

Oat twice as fast. As I type this reply my battery was at 100% and is now at 86%. This is the same case on my iPad I should have never got rid of my iPhone 3GS. I would much rather go back to that. Apple has replaced my 4S twice since I got it on the 29th.

Echoing thanks to Davidch for a good discussion thread on steps to improve with the Reset All Settings.  And good outline on how to go about doing it.  I stumbled around before I found this thread so it is definitely helpful.

Thanks for the reply, dgsmith.  I am generally charging my phone every other day. Used to charge the 3G every night.  I did do a hard reset after the 5.0.1 update (sleep and home button).  So, I'm going to be happy with how my phone is working now and not do anything else.  Just wasn't sure what was considered good.

    csal09,

i understand this can be frustrating, but you need to try my recommendation in the exact order that i suggest.  i have seen it work consitently many times now.  again try "reset all settings" under the settings -> general -> reset.  once the phone reboots, go through the initial setup process (lang, wifi, sir, enable location service, etc) and choose "setup new phone", then "start using phone".  next, go to settings -> location services -> system and turn off timezone and iAd location services.  next, completely drain your battery (watch youtube watever until it goes off with the spinning icon), let it sit and cool off for a few minutes, then completely re-charge it overnight. if that does not improve the standby battery drain issue, i recommend you take it to an apple store.  they will likely offer you a replacement or a refund.  they also still offer the 3GS for free w/ 2 yr commitment if you want to go back to that.

    best of luck

I'm currently draining my battery. I really hope this fixes the problem. Does anyone know of a quick way to drain it? I still have 40% left.

The reset of the Settings actually fixed another one of my problems. Before, in the Purchased section of the App Store, the All list and Not on this iPhone list were identical. Now, the All lost shows all my apps correctly, instead of the ones not on my phone.

Well, the Purchased part worked the first time I used it after the reset. Now it doesn't anymore.

I think davdch deserves a medal for answering all of these questions!

I think resetting all settings is a good idea after applying the 5.0.1 patch, just to kind of give it a refresh! I don't know the ins and outs of theiPhone OS but it does make sense.

Also, draining to zero/off once a month won't do any harm either. I remember when I first got the phone the battery was shocking. I did the reset back on 5.0 and a full battery cycle a few times and the phone gradually started to last longer...

Then the update came and it sent me back to square one... But the reset and battery cycle seems to have helped again, the battery seems to get a little better each day.

This is the best phone I've ever had - I've had an android and a blackberry. The 4S is amazing compared to both of the smartphone platforms I've experienced. Let me tell you - my android phone I had to carry a plug and cable around with me. That is what you call battery drain.

Hope you all start seeing your phone improve soon, follow the instructions here, look through your settings - don't turn stuff of you need/want on/use. But anything you think is pointless being on all day (for me Bluetooth) just turn it off.

    Good luck!

    hey everyone...

just want to say YOUR WELCOME to all your thanks and kind words... that includes ALOHA and CHEERS.  i am trying to monitor this and a couple of the other related threads to try to help out so be patient with me if don't get back to you right away... i also have a wife and kids .   i don't work for apple but am very familiar with their products and many competing products in the phone and computing industry.  i do work in the mobile computing business and have long background in mechancial engineering, system programming and system support and i will do what i can to help.  i started the thread primarily because many of the other threads on the apple support forum became too much of a "complain session" and would like to keep this one from becoming that, so let's please do what we can to stay positive.  i have looked at the problem fairly hard and tried several different tests and my recommended process and settings seem to work in most cases.  just follow carefully everything step by step in the first few posts and i am fairly confident now it will resolve the issue for most users with the standby drain issue.  if it doesn't, i recommend taking it to an apple store or authorized provider for further review.

    good evening too all!

i did this today after two days of my phone lasting only 8 hours with everything off...

one thing i noticed is during this full charge and some light usage the phone is cool, it was warm the last two days like the processor was cranking away.

    we'll see tomorrow!
