Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

Completed your instructions a couple times and followed it precisely

    Usage: 3 hours and 20min

    Standby: 5 hours and 30min

    With 47% left???

    Is my phone defective?

Lost 5% logging on and typing this from my iPhone 4s which is my second one btw.

Attention phone buyers: it is time for apple to slow down and perfect what it has offered to the market, rather than trying to hit the next home run every year. Apple will lose customers, if it doesn't attack and fix the weakenesses like battery life and battery replacement. I  was a first iphone buyer and then a 3gs buyer, but not a 4s buyer, untill they get the battery life issue fixed, or get a better battery. I suspect I am not in the minority. Serri is a good idea, but will not get used, until battery can support it. So, come on Apple- dont do the right thing, do the thing right!

    eggoverlight,

i understand your frustation, "but" although apple provides some of the best products overall in its respective markets, it is far from perfect and has had its share of issues with all iPhone models.  apple had plenty of problems with every iPhone release (2G had dropped calls, 3G had dropped calls and battery problems), (3GS had yellow screens) and (4... have you ever heard the term  "antennagate").  remember,  a large percentage of users are not having these issues.  in my experience after performing my process, I have as good battery life now as I did with my previous models when they were new.  Siri is great by the way... having a 1 hr commute in each direction, I am not sure how I ever got by without it...

also, changewave released a survey a few days ago that shows the "overall" satsisfaction level of the 4S @96% is actually better than what was reported with the 4 @93% at this point in time after introduction of each models, so apple must be doing something right.  my process does fix the issue for most issues and i would appreciate it we keep the thread focused on trying to impliment that and not become another "complain" session.

    thanks again davidch !!

Now i m noticing in the following days that the battery starts draining out if i use Wifi. In fact it started draining while i could see it...4-5% is some 20-30 mins

But, still the standby improvement is huge. At the very start of it...the battery lasted almost 2 days.

I recharged it again from 19%, and again 1 full day is over and it is still 89%.

However a lil concerned over the WiFi usage. Is it that the battery drains about 5% in 30 mins of WiFi usage like video playback, downloads from App store, etc. ??

In fact iPhone 4S has some sort of antennagate, or wifigate at least. Touching the metal band affects your wifi signal badly often.

Even when i start playing some game on my iPhone 4S, the battery drops suddenly...i could notice 5% drop in battery in 10 mins of play...    Is this normal?

My standby battery problem is more or less solved.

Battery life as of 9:26 pm tonight:

    57%

    3 hours, 1 minute

    Standby: 13 hours, 36 minuets

    *HOWEVER*

My phone was on Wi-Fi for literally the entire day. I wish I could get this while on 3G most of the day.

I'm going to leave it unplugged overnight and see what happens.

Edit: I noticed from one of my previus screenshots after 3 hours of usage and standby of almost 9 hours on a "normal" day (when I actually leave the house and use 3G most of the day, not like today when I was home all day and on Wi-Fi) my phone was at 40%. So there is still a drastic difference of almost 20% on Wi-Fi vs 3G. I realize that the battery lasts longer while on Wi-Fi than 3G, but I wish I could get my Wi-Fi times using 3G. Then my battery would be fine.

I'm very happy with the time I get on Wi-Fi. Not so much with 3G.

My stats before I went to bed last night:

    56%

    Usage: 3 hours, 3 minuets

    Standby: 14 hours, 2 minuets

    At 7:16 this morning:

    50%

    Usage: 3 hours, 11 minuets

    Standby: 23 hours, 27 minuets

So overnight, it drained 6%, gained 8 minuets of usage and 9 hours, 15 minuets of Standby.

What do you guys think? (it was on Wi-Fi)

Re: 5.0.1 update--even worse battery life

    Nov 23, 2011 6:57 PM (in response to art_in_motion)

For anyone new to the thread be sure to go through these steps to address the battery after updating to iOS 5.0.1:

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

    2. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd

    4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!

Hi all, my wife and i both recently took the plunge and converted from HTC and Samsung to an iPhone 4 and 4s, but we are both experiencing issues. We both suffer with poor battery life, even just opening a few apps looses 2-3%, we both suffer with intermittent WiFi loss and also poor signal quality. Our iPad (non 3G) is okay and all three devices are running IOS 5.0.1.

I must admit we are very dissapointed on the performance side, with no obvious resolution from Apple, the who reason for changing was the brand, especially as everyone we know was raving about the phones. Having moved from Android to Apple I now wish we hadnt, which is a shame. We have both turned off a majority of the functions highlighted from numerous people on this and other forums, with no change, if we turn off much more I may as well buy a Nokia mono screen just to get decent battery life and signal quality. Please sort this out Apple, your customer satisfaction and repeat client base and loyalty is being tarnished here

Those numbers look pretty good to me.

You used only 6% during almost 9.5 hours of standby, and 8 minutes of use.

I suspect the 8 minutes of use was either an app that you didn't shut down and was runnning in the background, or maybe you did not say "no" to allowing your phone to send out diagnostic data. I suppose it could be the phone checking on the availability of wifi from time to time.

May I suggest turning your phone off overnight, unless you actually need to leave it on?
