Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

That didn't work.  But my situation may be a little funny.  I have Gmail set up as an Exchange account (it is initially how I synced my contacts) and iCloud is setup to sync my contacts.  Initially, however, I had Contacts set to "off" in Gmail (because they synced the first time and didn't need to sync again since iCloud handles this).  I turned it back on in Gmail and then went to Mail, Contacts and Calendar settings and saw that the "Default Account" for contacts was set to iCloud.  I changed this to Gmail since I turned the contacts back on.  I then noticed that my messages were associated with names at this point.  I then went into Gmail and turned the Contacts "off" and the names were still associated.  And also, since those contacts were turned "off" at this point, there was no option for Default Account for contacts.  It is now fixed -- I know that was lengthy, but maybe it will help someone.

Tottally agree about reset all settings - general - reset - reset all settings :) I did this and I can see my 4s stay on 100% for about 3 hours or more. What I did was disable all location services and Siri ( she's beta anyway ) and resign my wifi password, don't send diagnosis,  turned all iCloud services off until the next update fixes the battery suck - it seems to me all the new additions make a great phone if it could actually perform without draining the battery - I know right why turn everything off, well it's all the same as if it was before iOS 5 in a way - a bit sad but all the location services and Siri's communication with iCloud seems to drain the phone fast - or I could be a couple of apps. Hope it helps.

glad it is working out for you.  also, you should be able to comfortly run Siri and some of the other location/notification services... just don't let them get out of hand. the only one taking Siri away from me is my wife (she may be getting jealous). enjoy your iPhone

I have now owned my iPhone 4S (my very first Apple purchase) since Thursday and I absolutely love it.

However, the battery drain does seem to be very quick, so I am trying your instructions David.

I did the settings > general >reset and then ran thru the setup questions.

now... in step 3 of your instructions that I printed out.. it says

"turn off system location services timezone and iAd"

I can't find those.... where are they?

thanks in advance and thank you for these instructions.  Hopefully they will help keep my battery charged longer.

as a new Apple customer, this is obviously a new phone and am using it from a clean (factory) slate.. i.e. no upgrading from a previous iPhone or any "i device."

    Susan,

Those settings can be found in Settings>Location Services>System Service (at the bottom of the screen)

    I found them !!!

Settings > location services >  system services

I now have them set this way:

    Cell network search - On

Compass Calibration - Off  (is that just used by the Compass app?  or is there another use?

    Diagnostics & Usage - Off

    Location based iAds - Off

Setting Time Zone - Off  (what does this do if on?)

Traffic - On   (what is this?)

I have iCloud turned off because this is the only Apple device that I own.

    I have Wifi turned off.

    I have Siri On

Should I have mail set to Push or Fetch?  I understand the difference but not sure which to choose.  I'm retired so don't get a ton of email and nothing that is urgent.   I'm guessing that Fetch is more battery friendly?

Anything else I need to do other than letting the battery drain completely and then recharging it completely?

    Thanks again !!!

it certainly won't hurt anything.  smart phones do use more battery than standard phone, but you should be able to get 1-2 days on one charge with moderate use (i.e. 1 day heavy, 2 days light).  note, that my process typically solves the battery drain issue in standby.  you can check your usage in settings -> general -> usage (at very bottom).  also, when you received you iPhone was iOS 5.0.1 installed already or did you need to update it.  just curious.  thanks and good luck.

iOS 5.0.1 was already on it, unless the young man at the Sprint store updated it without me knowing about it.... as I said.. I bought the phone last Thursday (Dec 1st) and I bought it at the local Sprint store if that makes a difference.

which leads me to another question.. sorry.. I don't want to distract from the subject of this thread.. but a quick newbie question..

does the phone automatically install iOS upgrades or do I do that manually?

thanks for all the help !!!

You will need to manually update it.  It can be done from the device under settings app -> general -> software update or you can install it using iTunes where it shows up on the first screen when you connect the device.  When an new update is available that you do not have, apple will typically give a notification on reboot of device and in iTunes when connected.

For anyone new to the thread be sure to go through these steps to address the battery after updating to iOS 5.0.1:

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

2 a. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

2 b. If you do get the complete new setup screen with language setup and setup as new phone or restore from iTune/iCloud backup, be sure to go back to #1 and reset all settings again (it should happen the second time)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd (settings -> location services -> system services)

    4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!

    hey everyone...

just want to say YOUR WELCOME to all your thanks and kind words... i am trying to monitor this and a couple of the other related threads to try to help out so be patient with me if don't get back to you right away... i also have a wife and kids .   i don't work for apple but am very familiar with their products and many competing products in the phone and computing industry.  i do work in the mobile computing business and have long background in mechancial engineering, system programming and system support and i will do what i can to help.  i started the thread primarily because many of the other threads on the apple support forum became too much of a "complain session" and would like to keep this one from becoming that, so let's please do what we can to stay positive.  i have looked at the problem fairly hard and tried several different tests and my recommended process and settings seem to work in most cases.  just follow carefully everything step by step in the first few posts and detail process above and i am fairly confident now it will resolve the issue for most users with the standby drain issue.  if it doesn't, i recommend taking it to an apple store or authorized provider for further review.

    good luck too all!
