Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

    Daryl,

Follow Davisch's post exactly. It does not use iTunes restore feature. Its all done directly on the iPhone itself. Also do not use the "erase all content"  option that WILL delete all your data. And you do not want to restore you settings from the backup as the current backup is a backup of your device with the problem. So effectivley it will restore the items you are attempting to get rid of.  Since this procedure does not impact your data/apps etc there is no need to restore it anyway.  Certainly you still want a backup just in case but after the process is completed and all is well, THEN backup again with the "fixed" version and you will be good to go and have a good backup of the phone in a working state. Luck to ya! Hope it helps.

Oh another issue regarding the backup.

I think David did mention not to restore from itunes/icloud. Would that mean that I shouldn't actually use my old backup pre-update?

that is correct... after you perform the process and determine that your standby battery drain issue is resolved, it would be good to then perform a new backup to iTunes and/or iCloud.  note that if you do need to return to older "pre-process" backup for some reason, just re-run my process and it should fix it again...

    davidch,

Thank you so much. I have followed your procedure and I currently stand at:

    1 hr 53 minutes usage

    1 day 0 hours standby

    70% Battery remaining

walter... that looks good now and i am glad it worked so well for you.

When the 4S arrived, I charged it fully and restored my ancient iPhone 2G backup to it. The 4S promptly began losing 2% to 4% per hour on standby.  Dismayed, I scoured them intarwebs until I came across your post. Following your directions -- Reset All Settings, Set Up As New iPhone -- appears to have achieved reasonable battery performance.

yes... as a long time iPhone user (bought a 4G iPhone 2G on day 2), i was pretty frustrated myself with my battery performance of my 4S the first few days.  once i figured out a solution and tried it a few times on other folks iPhones with the issue, i figured it was time to spread the joy to the forums.  i tried a couple of post on the other threads, but the complaining and negativity was hard to break through so i started my own.

The battery life is no better than my original 2007 iPhone, but at least it is not much worse.

agree, the battery life of my iPhone 4S seems very similar to my original 2G new (maybe a little better), but you gotta admit it can certaintly do a lot more now and virtually flys doing it

I'm still not sure I have seen any difference. 5min of Internet 5min on Facebook and about 20 text messages and there I've lost a lot of my battery. Usage is showing 1hr 27min and 13 hrs 24 min on standby with battery at 60%. I removed the phone from the charger at 5am and around 930 turned it on for the first time. It had been in my pocket asleep during that time. Usage showed 30 min which leads me to believe there is some phantom programs running or something not sure.

    Hey guys,

I have done all the necessary steps already and have set it up as a new phone.

Question now is... after doing everything, I connected it to iTunes but it didn't probe me to ask whether it's a new phone. It went straight to sync and backup again. Is it correct? Am I suppose to get any notification from iTunes saying that it's a new phone?

    Thanks again!

That would almost be correct. As stated earlier there is no need for iTunes for this process. The phone itself asked you whether you wanted to set as new or restore yes? And you selected set up as new? Then walked through the wizard selecting the "out of box" options? If thats what you did then you are set.  Once you have completed just let your phone run down until it cuts off with the spinning star. Then fully charge to 100% (pref overnight) but at lease a few hours after 100%. If you backed up already you have overwritten your backup you had before the process.  I suspect you dont need it but its good to have a backup anytime you fool with the phones settings just to preserve your data  in case something goes wrong.

Oh and Daryl, If you dont specifically need wi-fi sync with iTunes, if you cut that off it seems to really help the battery life even more. You can try it both ways and see your particular results

I just learned something.   I'm a beginner at all this, so it may not be important to the battery problem, but here it is.

A friend sent me an article of 20 tips for using the iPhone 4S.   Included was a tip that said that apps keep running even after you are finished using them.

It said to press Home twice and at the bottom of the screen will appear all the running apps.   Hold down on one of the apps and they will all start to jiggle with a horizontal dash in a red circle.   Tap the red circle and the app will close.   (I found that I had to double tap the red circle to close it, but it worked).  All of the apps that I have used all day long were at the bottom of the screen.

Would having those apps "running" even after you stop using them be contributing to the battery problem?

and, second, why ----- when you stop using an app -------- would it not close automatically?   I'm totally confused about that.... help !!!

    Susan

Hi davidch, 1AppleADayNoWay, allother kind hearts out there,

This is my first iphone, it’s an iPhone 4S loadedwith iOS5.0.1 out the box, bought it last Nov. 25. It’s also my first iDevice and sofar I love it, but I’m concerned for the battery life.  L

There’s no Apple store here in thePhilippines and the warranty center is a country away SG or HK. I really savedup a lot just to buy this I hope it’s not wasted because I’ll be heartbroken. L

I have tons of questions I hope you have time to enlighten me about them, most of them make sense and they matterwith regards to the overall experience of the phone especially battery usage, here goes:

    1. In Standby or using the phone: does leaving more apps in themultitasking bar burn more battery than leaving none open?

Or no difference? Even if there's no wi-fi andthe phone's locked but should iteven matter considering that the phone is on sleep mode?

Also Does the number of unclosed apps, enabled wifi, affect the battery drain even on standby? Or it should not?

    1. Is locking the home screen same as pushing the sleep/wakebutton wherein the phone should go into sleep?

    1. As a best way of charging the battery, should I turn it offevery time I charge - or ON is OK?

Related question is it best practiceto charge the phone even if it’s not depleted yet or still more than 20%? Or itdoesn’t matter since it’s a Li-Ion battery?

Withregards to this procedure to save my battery life:

    1. Will this work for my iPhonewhich is Ios5 5.0.1 out of the box?
    2. When recharging back to 100%,do I need to turn it off until its 100% (Oh come to think of it how would Iknow it’s 100% already -_-)

    1. AnywayI’ll be trying this procedure when I can then I’ll update you definitely.

    Here’smy current situation:

    1. In standby mode my iphoneburns 2-3%. NO wifi, JUST 3 apps in the MT bar whatsoever, no date usagewhatsoever because 3G is disabled
      1. Ithought initially that this was normal but reading this thread I found thatit’s not supposed to be that way.
      2. As formy usage statistics – are these acceptable numbers? It charged to 100% 12 AMSGT yesterday Monday, Dec 5, 2011. Now at 17:32 PM SGT, Dec 6 it’s 25%, itsays:
        1. The Usage is 6 hrs and 4minutes (plus some minutes while still writing this reply)
        2. Standby is 1 day and 17 hours
        3. Even if these were kinda acceptable compared to other Usage Statistics in this thread,I didn’t feel I really used the phone that much most of the time I’m working :/PLUS the 2-3% standby battery drain should not be that way right…
    2. Overnight, with wi-fi setting to ON (but my router is dead), with 12-13 apps in the multitasking bar, from57% it went to 48% after 9 hours L It shouldn’t be draining that much at standby even if there are lot of open apps, right?

Very sorry for the number of questions, I don’t hope to get a response any timesoon.

I really, really hope you canenlighten me with my questions I’d be sooo happy. Even more happier if thisprocedure works for me! Otherwise Apple would make me sadder

Thankyou for your initiative of helping people via this thread!

Hopingfor your responses to my questions. Thank you so much in advance!!

    Cheers,

    Michele

well yes there is. However if you have wi-fi off all the way then its already not using it. In iTunes on the general tab there are options at the bottom to open with iTunes and allow wi-fi sync. Thats where you turn it off. If you have wi-fi available where you are it really works well to have wi-fi turned on. Its fast and saves your data allotment from your carrier. With wi-fi sync off, the iPhone appears to turn off wifi automatically when phone is in sleep mode and fires back up when you open it.
