Susan, the apps running at the bottom is how the iPhoone can multitask. That gives you an easy way to switch between apps you are using and they come up faster and where you left off. So instead of scrolling through your screens and groups, you can simply doubletab the home and find the app you were using. I tend to close oput some that I may open but dont intend on using again. But I dont think it makes a huge difference unless the ones running are constantly using location services or something like that all the time. Others may have another opinion on it but I would not worry to much on leaving them alone for the most part. Again if you have something running you know you will not need or be using then may as well close it. Cant hurt.

sbailey4 - Thank you.  That makes sense and now I know what to do if I am using wifi.  At the moment, Sprint still allows unlimited data on its individual plans.. but I'm sure that won't last... lol  At my house, wifi is a lot slower than 3G which is why I'm not using it.

back to batteries....  Last night, I let my battery drain to 0% and the phone shut itself off.  It has been charging all night.  I'm about to go get it and see what happens after doing David's reset program yesterday......

Thanks again sbailey4.  I'm a weather nut, so I have 3 weather apps and they all use location services, so I'll try shutting them off when I'm not using them and see if that helps !!!

Great hope the reset helped! Keep us posted.  And 3g faster than your home internet? The unlimited data is a nice perk. I still have that with Verizon with an old Alltel plan.  Oh and for weather, send the dog out, if he comes back in wet, its raining so grab an umbrella   I personally like the built in weather app and like you always looking at it. Have a few locations programmed in there. Not really sure why tho haha

I'll keep you posted on the reset.....  Internet connection is Time Warner Cable and it's always been a problem.... don't get me started on that subject... lol

    thanks again.....

    davidch,

Your procedure has help my usage/standy time and many, many other people. Thanks!

This is just speculative question, but since it is a clear fix for most (not all), what in the world is taking Apple so long to put out 5.0.2 update that fixes this, so we don't have to go through this procedure? With OTA, it is a pretty easy matter now.

I think of the countless thousands that don't make the effort to search and read forums, that are living with poorer battery life. Having said that, the majority of users didn't get this problem with 5.0.1 (or maybe even 5.0), so I hope that is not the reason to address this right now.

    any thoughts?

    When I looked in the log-aggregated-2011 ....

    I found this:

    appBackgroundActiveTime.com.apple.mobilephone

    102649

    com.apple.power.wake_reasons.baseband

    929

    com.apple.power.wake_reasons.other

    167

    com.apple.power.wake_reasons.rtc

    12

    com.apple.power.wake_reasons.user

    9

    com.apple.power.wakecount

    949

Can someone tell me what this various items mean?

My iPhone's usage time increases while it's in standby mode (everything like bluetooth, locations services, icloud etc is off)

    Someone can help me?

Thanks for your reply and advice,. iv tryed resetting all settings. Think iv done all possible changes, battery is still to bad for me,. iv used HTC desire and that worked fine for me, after that the iphone 4 and that was not as good in battery time as htc but still was ok. I did what I needed in my day with emails, pics and other.

And now with the 4s its just no way I can get thru 1 day with my normal usage. And to be honest, paying that much for a phone and it works this crap cant be good. I wont accept it

I will let apple have a couple of weeks to do something to fix it or it will be a HTC again.

Peter, Have you tried to eliminate any particular apps causing the issue? I mean the iPhone may be fine and there could be a certain app with some corruption etc causing excessive battery drain. May be worth a try to default it, add your essentials like email and contacts and such and see how it performs. If it stays the same with 'out of box' options then certainly the phone may have an issue. Otherwise if it works then maybe install an app at a time and see how it does. I have read of a few apps causing a severe battery drain and once they were eliminated all was well. May be worth a try. Of course if out of box and still severe battery issues maybe a trip to Apple for an exchange is warranted.

No,. iv done nothing to my apps,. and maybe there is something I should try to do.

I thank you for you positivity hehe,. just now im just angry on the phone hehe.

But I will try a last time with the apps and we will see.

    Thanks again for your help

Also,.. what apps have you noticed drains more battery?

  • sbailey4 Level 1 Level 1 (5 points)

I cannot for the life of me remember. One in particular (maybe in this thread)  100% identified than when a certain app was installed battery was in the gutter but when it was removed all was well. I had heard similar stories on other forums as well.  Sometimes maybe a particular app in general just creates problems and sometimes maybe just corruption in the install of an app, so a removal and reinstall may fix. So to troubleshoot whether its the iPhone in general a clean slate should tell, then if all well adding apps backs 1 at a time while a slow process may point you to a resolution you can live with.
