Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

I hope I'm not speaking too soon, but I think I've found the battery problem. I went to Settings>General> Siri raise to speak turned off

    Current Stats:

    62%

    Usage: 2 hours, 6 minuets

    Standby: 7 hours, 57 minuets

    Things are looking good !!!

I followed David's instructions yesterday, then I let the battery drain to 0% and the phone shut itself off, then I charged it overnight for over 9 hours.

At the moment, 5:08 p.m. east coast time, my usage shows:

    usage:  1 our, 19 minutes

    standby :  7 hours 44 minutes

    battery at 72%

that's a huge improvement from what I was getting before.

I have Wifi and iCloud turned off.

    Location services are on.

    Siri is on.

    Bluetooth is on.

Mail is set to fetch every 30 minutes.

    I think that's it.

Clearly, I haven't used the phone a whole lot today, but before the reset the battery % was dropping 1 - 2% as I held the phone in my hand just watching it...

Thanks David !!!   I think you have solved the problem.

Great news Susan, One other item to suggest. You may want to set your email to manually. It downloads quickly when you press the mail app. I figured for me (2 email accts) I dont really need the mail sitting there until i am ready to view it.  I mean just because its there dont mean I am ready to actually open it to read so I just check mail whenever i need to and it comes in within seconds of starting the app. So that saves all those 30 minute cycles of checking mail. Just a suggestion. Some folks open mail every time a message comes in. I get to much to do that. Glad that worked for you .Davidch is really on to something I believe.  Great results for a lot of people.

Thanks sbailey4.   I'll set the mail to manual and give that a try.   I also don't need the mail sitting there waiting for me..  If it pops up quickly when I hit the Mail app then that's all I need...

Interestingly the default fetch time is set for manual. So if you just put it back to manual you can leave the mail accounts set to fetch. Apple made a few different options there so you can change different accounts different ways. That is available in the Advanced section at the bottom.

Anyway, anyhow the phone is not suppose to be tweak...to have better results.

no one have be capable to  let the phone doing nothing with it and have 200 hours stanby.....the best i see is 125.

do you know someone that can talk 8 hours in one day :no

watch video or film: anyway or impossible you can acheive 10 hours........

try to web for 8 hours ............in the same day.......impossible.

whe have the half that the specs give for that phone..........in a long run people will forget and use to it.

and will buy the IP5 and that phone will have at least 1900 or 2000mah instead of 1450.

you must turn the phone in a flip phone........or a flop phone that is...........

Sorry, If you look at the fetch schedule settings, they are:  Every 15 min, 30 min, hourly and manually. The default fetch schedule was set to Manual out of box.  So in reality setting the mail to a Fetch schedule would be effectivly setting it to manual. If you have changed the fetch schedule to 30 min then you either need to set the fetch schedule to manual OR set the email acct to manual instead of fetch in the advanced options (options there are Push,Fetch and manual)  Basically setting the acct to Fetch makes it follow whatever fetch schedule you define, 15,30,1hr or manual.  Hope that clears it up

    Thanks again sbailey4 - I think I've got it this time !!!

David - thank you so much for coming up with a fix that works and for your patience in answering all of our questions.   You have made the difference between my first Apple purchase being a joy and it being a big frustration.   I love my new iPhone 4 S and would have hated to have given up on it.. which I would have done without your fix !!!

    An anecdote for you all...

I'm still going on the same charge since following davidch's advice.

    Current status:

    • Usage 5 Hours, 27 Minutes
    • Standby 2 Days, 11 Hours
    • 9% battery remaining

Average of ~1.4% battery consumption per hour.  I can live with that.  I just hope it stays this good

It's about bed time here and I'm tempted to see if standby survives until morning...

Hi David. I think my battery life has improved with a few resets.

    Usage - 5:22

    Standby - 17:45

The usage was just texting and some Internet. No games or videos or music. It is much improved but after seeing what other people are getting I'm feeling greedy perhaps.

I contacted apple and they're sending me a new phone. I just hope it isnt any worse haha.

I am extremely frustrated with this battery issue.  I've tried everything mentioned here, except letting my phone drain completely.  I don't have all the stats but I know for a long while I had to recharge my phone twice a day and find that unacceptable.  Lately it hasn't been too bad, but I called Apple last night anyway.  The girl I spoke with was useless.  She told me to turn off the "Push" notification for email, NOT to let the battery drain completely and to shut the phone down every day for at least 25 minutes.  That's it.  Then she told me to keep on eye on the battery and if I continued to have a problem I should call back and they'd make an appointment for me to come in with the phone.  BTW, I have a 4S, but I know it's a software issue and not hardware, except maybe the battery is defective.  I've also noticed lately that loading ANYTHING takes forever.  IDK why.  I watched my battery last night after I charged it to 100% about 7pm.  I used it lightly until bedtime and then again during the day, and found it had gone to 51% by 2pm.  Not bad.  Then between 2pm and 4:30 when I left work it was down to 26%!  I hadn't done anything different and in 2 1/2 hours it drained by 50%.  I'm going to Apple on Saturday.
