Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

doreenwings... you need to do the entire process step by step including "draining the battery completely".  without draining the battery, the battery settings will not be recalibrated and the issue will likely remain.  again, ALL the steps and the ORDER are important to get this to work.

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

2 a. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

2 b. If you do get the complete new setup screen with language setup and setup as new phone or restore from iTune/iCloud backup, be sure to go back to #1 and reset all settings again (it should happen the second time)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd (settings -> location services -> system services)

    4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!

doreenwings - I highly recommend following David's instructions exactly - including the part about draining the phone to 0% and letting the phone shut itself off when it gets to 0% and then charging it for about 9 or 10 hours.

I think the drain/re-charge is a necessary part of the solution.

The difference in battery drain pre-David and post-David has been dramatic...

    Worth a try !!!

Perhaps David would be kind enough to re-post the latest up-to-date tweaked list of instructions for newcomers.

It can't be repeated often enough.

yes... i recommend turning on location services.  just be conservative about how many apps you allow use it.

I would update to iOS 5.0.1, then perform the reset, then drain the battery all the way down til the star circles and the iPhone cuts off by itself. Then charge it back to 100% and leave it a few hours after it reaches 100% . Good luck with the update.

Ok, I will try it.  I guess what do I have to lose?  I have all my info backed up on my computer if I should lose anything.  I'll let you know how it goes.  I charged it to 100% late last night around midnight.  Went to bed, checked it at 5am and it was down to 76%.  It's ridiculous.  I used to charge it before bed and get up in the am to 98% before this stupid update.  I made an appt at the Genius bar for Saturday, but maybe I can avoid going.  I'll let you guys know.  Thanks!

After the update and following David's steps, my battery life has improved a little but it's still better than nothing

Thanks David and sbailey4 for your help and advice! By the way for the step 2b, maybe it will be less confusing to new users if you add a "not" after the first three words haha.

    Cheers~

For anyone new to the thread be sure to go through these steps to address the battery after updating to iOS 5.0.1:

2 b. If you do not get the complete new setup screen with language setup and setup as new phone or restore from iTune/iCloud backup, be sure to go back to #1 and reset all settings again (it should happen the second time)

It has worked for many, many users now. hey everyone...

just want to say YOUR WELCOME to all your thanks and kind words... i am trying to monitor this and a couple of the other related threads to try to help out so be patient with me if don't get back to you right away... i also have a wife and kids .   i don't work for apple but am very familiar with their products and many competing products in the phone and computing industry.  i do work in the mobile computing business and have long background in mechancial engineering, system programming and system support and i will do what i can to help.  i started the thread primarily because many of the other threads on the apple support forum became too much of a "complain session" and would like to keep this one from becoming that, so let's please do what we can to stay positive.  i have looked at the problem fairly hard and tried several different tests and my recommended process and settings seem to work in most cases.  just follow carefully everything step by step in the first few posts and detail process above and i am fairly confident now it will resolve the issue for most users with the standby drain issue.  if it doesn't, i recommend taking it to an apple store or authorized provider for further review.

    good luck too all!
