Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

    davidch,

well that day i got 8hrs on standby it was probably a mix of 3G and wifi but most likely i was mostly 3G. For example today its been off the charger for 20 hrs standby 4hrs 4 mins usage.. ive been on it alot today texting, facebook, twitter, etc so i guess thats normal.

last night when i pulled it off the charger and let it sit to kind of test it out, it stood at 100% for about 4 hrs with very very light usage.. all on wifi. when i woke up this morning it had 14 hrs standby and 96% battery but i had a lot of notifications so i guess that had been running for a while

also, my wifi has been going out a lot lately. i dont know if its the phone or my router itself. that also seem to have affected the battery alot... going from wifi to 3G and vice versa

boogie - try disabling Search for Networks in Wi-Fi settings. Just in case your router is having intermittent problems.

    Worth a pop.

That's the one. Useful to disable anyway as it will detect Wi-Fi all over the place, in which 99% of the time you ignore or cancel :¬)

This imporved my battery life DRASTICALLY !! Thank you so much! Pretty much getting the same performance I had on my iPhone 4, with no real change in usage, and multiple settings turned off.

    A new problem...

After following David's procedure last week, my new iPhone 4S (my first Apple purchase ever so no restores from a previous phone) stopped draining the battery so fast.  All was well.

Yesterday, I took the phone off the charger in the morning, it was at 100%, put it in my purse, headed out the door and took my phone out of my purse at 11:00 a.m. to make a call and nothing.. it was dead.   Got home.  Plugged it into the wall charger.. nothing.  dead.   Came to these message boards, found a thread about the issue, learned how to do a hard reset, did that... started working again.

Just to be safe, I called Apple Tech Support, the woman had me do a reset to factory settings thru iTunes, then she said to charge overnight, try it for a few days and call back if I had any further problems.  That was at 4 P.M. yesterday afternoon.

This morning, phone is working fine.

BUT..... here it comes.....  I now have the fast draining battery issue back again... sigh... this Grandma is not a happy camper.

I took it off the charger 3 hours ago.  It was at 100%.   Now.. having NOT used the phone at all.. the battery is at 77%.

    Totally unacceptable.

    David help !!!

Should I do your procedure again?   What happened?

And who knows if the phone-going-dead-issue is resolved.  I can't believe that resetting it to the factory settings would have fixed that.

    Help !!!!

Most likely all you needed to do was the reboot. But run the reset settings process again. It wont hurt to do so. That will most likely get you fixed again.  Probably no need to run the calibrate battery again but if the reset dont help you may want to in the next day or so.

Hey, I just wanted to say that I went through your process and it significantly improved the preformance of both my iPad 2 and iPhone 4.

I bought my iPad a month ago so I was a little bummed when it started acting weird. Thanks to you I can actually enjoy using the device again. Prior to resetting, draining, and fully charging my iPad it was getting hot during simple web browsing.

I actually started quoting this thread and posting it elsewhere to see what kind of results other people have.

Just out of curiosity, when you did the reset on your device ... were you logged into your apple ID and activly using icloud? If not, did you delete the account entirely from your phone prior to the reset or did you just keep it enabled?

i did your method and it seemed to work out fine..all of a sudden, i charged it to 90% and after an hour it has gone to 74%, all i have done is send text messages and play one game of hanging with friends. is it because i am on the edge network? i cant get great 3g signal at work and the signal goes in and out..would this be the issue?

Hello, i've got ios 5 version on my iphone 4s have nearly all of only 3g on and my batery at the moment is 64% and usage 1:40 min standby 2h this is phathetical situation what i can do to solve this.. Please realy need

jose... i recommend you try my process step by step and in order, if you haven't yet.

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

2 a. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

2 b. If you do not get the complete new setup screen with language setup and setup as new phone or restore from iTune/iCloud backup, be sure to go back to #1 and reset all settings again (it should happen the second time)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd (settings -> location services -> system services)

    4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!
