Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

    A new problem...

After following David's procedure last week, my new iPhone 4S (my first Apple purchase ever so no restores from a previous phone) stopped draining the battery so fast.  All was well.

Yesterday, I took the phone off the charger in the morning, it was at 100%, put it in my purse, headed out the door and took my phone out of my purse at 11:00 a.m. to make a call and nothing.. it was dead.   Got home.  Plugged it into the wall charger.. nothing.  dead.   Came to these message boards, found a thread about the issue, learned how to do a hard reset, did that... started working again.

Just to be safe, I called Apple Tech Support, the woman had me do a reset to factory settings thru iTunes, then she said to charge overnight, try it for a few days and call back if I had any further problems.  That was at 4 P.M. yesterday afternoon.

This morning, phone is working fine.

BUT..... here it comes.....  I now have the fast draining battery issue back again... sigh... this Grandma is not a happy camper.

I took it off the charger 3 hours ago.  It was at 100%.   Now.. having NOT used the phone at all.. the battery is at 77%.

    Totally unacceptable.

    David help !!!

Should I do your procedure again?   What happened?

And who knows if the phone-going-dead-issue is resolved.  I can't believe that resetting it to the factory settings would have fixed that.

    Help !!!!

susan (aka grandma)... try doing my process again as sbailey suggested and let me know how it works out.  sorry for the delay getting back to you... been swamped at home and work last few days

Hey, I just wanted to say that I went through your process and it significantly improved the preformance of both my iPad 2 and iPhone 4.

I bought my iPad a month ago so I was a little bummed when it started acting weird. Thanks to you I can actually enjoy using the device again. Prior to resetting, draining, and fully charging my iPad it was getting hot during simple web browsing.

I actually started quoting this thread and posting it elsewhere to see what kind of results other people have.

Just out of curiosity, when you did the reset on your device ... were you logged into your apple ID and activly using icloud? If not, did you delete the account entirely from your phone prior to the reset or did you just keep it enabled?

john... glad my process is working out so well for you.  i did have my iCloud account setup, but only have it set for email (push) and reminders.  good luck and enjoy your iPhone 4 and iPad 2...

anyone here about this supposed iOS 5.0.1 upgrade from the November release?

    http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/12/15/apple_releases_apple_tv_4_4_4_twea ks_ios_5_0_1_for_iphone_4s.html

chaboogie... i doubt there are any significant changes to that code (probably related to the international release as the link suggest).  if it had siginficant changes, apple would call it 5.0.2 or 5.1.

Thanks David !!!    I did re-do your procedure as sbailey suggested and the battery is now behaving itself !!

You have helped so many people with this procedure and you have been very generous with your time in answering all of our questions.

As I've said before, Apple owes you... big time !!!

Hopefully, my phone is now "stable."   We shall see :-)

    davidch,

do you know anything about wifi disconnects? I dont know if its my router or my phone but i reset my network settings and my wifi would not connect. i had to go into my router settings, rename my network and then plug the new info into my 4S and then it connected again.

    anyone been experiencing wifi issues?

I am on my 4th 4s. Each one drains battery to the point it is dead in 4 -5 hours with virtually no use. It also gets very warm. Each one has done the same thing. It's on AT&T and apple has replaced it three times at the store with the same results - no change. . I'm trying to find your fix but can't locate it. In the last hour it has been in my pocket and has lost 30% of the battery. I'm about to ditch the iPhone and go droid out of frustration. Can you help me :)

My battery has been great this week. Normally when I get out of school, without using my phone, the battery is usually down to the low 70%, and sometimes 60% or 50%. A couple of days this week, my battery was higher than 80% at the end of school.

in addition to just battery cycle, i recommend you try my process below step by step and in order.  it may take 1-3 times to get it work, correctly.  if that does not work you may try to delete your mail accounts and recreate them.  i corrupt and/or damaged account or mail message can also cause drain issue.

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

2 a. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

2 b. If you do not get the complete new setup screen with language setup and setup as new phone or restore from iTune/iCloud backup, be sure to go back to #1 and reset all settings again (it should happen the second time)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd (settings -> location services -> system services)

    4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!

no, never seen any real issues with wifi drops in reasonable range of the router.  in fact, in my experience, iPhones are one of the reliability mobile devices for connecting to wifi and maintaining connection.  have you seen the same thing with an other routers you connect to?

i have addressed over 10 users directly and hundreds now on this thread and have not seen that kind of drain.  since you have it on 4 phones now using your backup/personal data,  it is definitely not a hardware problem, it would lead me to there is something wrong with your backup that causing the excessive drain.  i recommend trying my process below which clears up issues with backup corruption in most cases.
