Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

I followed the steps David suggested, but didn't see much improvement. In just under an hour after I unplugged, I was down 5 percent on mostly standby and the phone ringing twice but no talk. I discovered this thread last night, drained the phone overnight and recharged this morning. I did a few things on the phone while it was recharging, including a phone call, txts, etc. Should that have any impact on the process?

I had tried this before on the suggestion of AppleCare and they had me do a full reset - - settings and contents and then setting up phone as new. Problem with that is that you lose everything and I had to end up restoring from itunes. I tried restoring from icloud but could never get that to work.

i tried davidch's method about a month ago, and it seemed to work.  unfortunately a few days ago my battery started draining alot again and, my usage and standby time are equal, an issue that I have never had before.  i was going to do davidch's method again to see if it would work.  im trying to do as much as i can to avoid going into an apple store or dealing with tech support because i feel like i wont get anywhere with them.  any tips/suggestions would be much appreciated!

David,  I used your procedure and it seemed to work.  With nothing on the phone but music the drain in standby was down significantly. Then...I added my exchange e mail account and BAM the drain was back just as bad. I don't get it as there have been no changes to the account or settings. Have you seen this before and do you have any suggestions?  Thank you very much!!

I have heard of that quite a bit. If you can set youe exchange acct to fetch instead of push I understand that helps. Also actually you can set for manual unless you have to have your email sitting there waiting for you when you want to read it. It only takes a moment to download new messages when you open your mail app so you may want to consider manual.

Have you installed a lot of apps since then? Perhaps sone of those have insisted on location and notification services. I would turn off any location services you really dont need as well as any locations services you may not really need. While all  those are a little handy, its not really worth the battery drain having all apps use location and notifications (IMO). Certainly you can run the reset process again as that does not destroy data but I would look at the other apps you may have installed first.

i havent installed alot of apps since then. i dont know if it i had anything to do with a new update for the facebook app that came out.  i did however shut my phone off and turn it back on sometime last night (holding down the sleep/wake button till slider appeared) it did stop this morning and now its 5 hours apart, which i dont know how that happened.  i put it in airplane mode for now because im going to do the reset when i get home.

i fully charged it from from 20% at around 7pm eastern time sunday night, right now my stats as of monday, 256 pm eastern time are:

    27% battery life

    14 hrs 58 min usage

    19 hrs 52 min standby

i think those are phenomenal stats if i was really using my phone for almost 15 hrs, but I rarely used my phone at all today

Yeah I suspect you charged it some but not all the way to 100% so the stats will not reset. It will tell you that just below the stats if its been plugged in since last full charge. The reset you can do without being home. You do not need iTunes and if you follow Davidch's instructions your data will remain. Other than your wifi network and a few other minor ones.  And yeah Facebook could certainly be causing some issue. Maybe try turning off its location and notifications and just see if it helps.

I changed from push to fetch and am still seeing the drain but not as bad. It is now draining at 7% per hour in standby no activity. Does this seem normal. On my iPhone 4 I had much better battery.

    Hi @ll!

After i Update to the New Build 9A406 5.0.1

    I have a Standby about 3 days 10 hours .

With activ 3G and Wi-Fi i lose about 1% per hour. In Airplane Mode 1% in 5 hours.

Check your IOS Build. If you have 9A405 installed make a update.

Interesting info. What build were you on prior? The 9A406 is supposed to just have a sim card issue fix that a few users were having not specifically anything to do with battery. Maybe the fact that a reset of iOS fixed you or I suppose its possible that the modem/simcard drivers were a cause of battery drain.  Anyone else seen  seen this yet?

Did a restore as new phone via DFU mode then sync to library. Battery improved tremendously, After 14 hours of heavy use, I'm at 43% I hardly lose any power in standby. Who knows maybe the preinstalled carrier software settings were to blame or maybe it is a fresh uncorrupted update of ios 5.0.1 9A406 that did the trick..I dont care as long as it's working.

If you are on Verizon dial *228 and then option 1. wait until it finishes. Then close the phone and message app (double tap home button, hold an icon until the  red circle shows and tap each app to close). After a minute or so try it.

Hey guyz, this is Farllei Herisson from Brazil,

I´ve just done everything you guyz guyz have guided me to with my iP 4s bought last saturday.

Its performance is ridiculous and I hope it´s not a problem with the new A5 processor and Antennas.

I´ve set as New Phone and everything. I will let the battery run out so that I can give a full recharge on it.

I hope my existing icloud account does not cause any damage once I set it again.

If it gets successful I´ll let you guyz know about it.
