Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

One thing you can try is do a "double click" on the indented button with the little white square  at the bottom of the iPhone.  This should show the Apps that are open on the bottom of the screen.  When you are not using the Apps, hold your fingure over one of them; they will start to wiggle and show a minus sign on each one.  You can then touch the minus sign on each open App and each App will disappear.  This closes the Apps and therefore extends battery charge.

When you want to use an apps, just select it as usual.  I hope this helps.

I happened just like that with me too.

I just tried david´s method and apparently the same thing happened to me.

It just needed a few seconds right after I added my exchange email and icloud email everything happened again.

My moment of happiness did not take more than 5 minutes. I wonder when apple will solve this matter and put this engineering team back to work in order to solve it, the iphone 4s purchases worldwide don´t stop, though.

I am really frustrated, and as I know how it works down here in Brazil, I won´t waste my **** time coming back to the store where I´ve bought it, cuz they will give me a lot of excuses and stuff to not give my money back.

Guyz I think we are all like slipknot song - Left behind.

I think I´ll wait ultil they fix this **** and release a new update online.

God be with us! (sarcasm with dissapointment and anger)

PS: Guyz while using siri right now it comes to my mind that anything related to 3g usage is gonna affect battery's life, but i don´t know if it´s something related to the new A5 processor and the 2 antennas.

    Very intriguing!!!

Set your exchange email to manual instead of push. That should help a lot as well

    What up guyz,

Yesterday, after reading looots of comments and advices, I restored my whole system,

Reset the settings, put all my data back up on device, configured as a new phone,

since then, notifications off, location services on but all apps off including siri,

emails as push manually, I used all day on 3g mode, just so you know now it´s 4:50 pm

in Brazil, and I still have 35% of battery, it definately got better ( of course i didn´t not expect

to have all these problems and go through all these different methods to have a little

    bit more of battery life).

I didn´t wait intil battery was 0% yesterday so I could recharge to 100% but I´ve seen improvement.

I recommend you guys to try the same until apple becomes real mobile company and updates the current

    system.

At least, after one day of restoring the whole system, I didn´t even need to recharge it yet!

    Best reagards,

I tried doing all the resets and calibirations etc. None worked.  I have also turned off almost all the services including the locations etc.

Strangely I have seen the battery going down even if I don't use it..........in flat twenty minutes its gone down from 100% to 97 %...........untouched.:(

The best solution I found was to carry the Battery Case and extra cables at work, home and also my classes...........Since I have spent so much money on the iPhone 4S.......spending another few thousand bucks did not hurt me as much it hurt for purchasing iPhone 4S.

For anyone new to the thread be sure to go through these steps to address the battery after updating to iOS 5.0.1:

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

2 a. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

2 b. If you do not get the complete new setup screen with language setup and setup as new phone or restore from iTune/iCloud backup, be sure to go back to #1 and reset all settings again (it should happen the second time)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd (settings -> location services -> system services)

    4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!

    hey everyone...

just want to say YOUR WELCOME to all your thanks and kind words over the last few months... i am trying to monitor this and a couple of the other related threads to try to help out so be patient with me if don't get back to you right away... i also have a wife and kids .   i don't work for apple but am very familiar with their products and many competing products in the phone and computing industry.  i do work in the mobile computing business and have long background in mechancial engineering, system programming and system support and i will do what i can to help.  i started the thread primarily because many of the other threads on the apple support forum became too much of a "complain session" and would like to keep this one from becoming that, so let's please do what we can to stay positive.  i have looked at the problem fairly hard and tried several different tests and my recommended process and settings seem to work in most cases.  just follow carefully everything step by step in the first few posts and detail process above and i am fairly confident now it will resolve the issue for most users with the standby drain issue.  if it doesn't, i recommend taking it to an apple store or authorized provider for further review.

i have been very busy over the last few weeks with the holidays and have not been as active as usual. i would like to give a special thanks to sbailey for helping out so much. enjoy the holidays and Merry Christmas!

    Here is the outcome:

    - It loose 3-4 % after 8 hours standby at night: confirmed with Davidch

    - It loose 1 % for around 4 minutes web browser by wifi, still not reach to Apple's ad (9 hours by wifi)

    - It loose 1 % for 5 minutes for video playback, again it not reach to Apple's ad (up to 10 hours)

Anyway how others people? Is mine Iphone OK?

Recently got the 4s and experienced the same battery issue everyone else has. Well first 4s had a defective volume button so I had to return it. When I got new one from Apple store in Richmond, VA I was told by the genius bar to follow the same directions as "davidch" has on here. After the reset and 2 full discharges here is my battery life right now:

    84%

    Usage - 1 hour

    Standby - 13 hours 30 min

Just a little over 1% per hour! VERY satisfied!

    Thanks davidch!

    davidch and all thanks

The iPhone 4S running IOS 5.0.1

A major problem with the iPhone 4s here is the situation let say you trying to call someone in the contact list or dial pad and accidently press in the wrong contact / Number and immediately press end call … your will get call failed and 2 option cancel and callback HOWEVER no matter what you do the call goes through and other person phone ring and nothing happened on the iPhone 4S

This is very bad if we trying to call home or a friend late at night and accidently press the wrong name . number no way of stopping the call

Called apple tech support no information the tech person did not know what to say about that and did restore same result

Apple wont acknowledge the problem this bug on all iPhone locked or unlock "Canada or USA”

No dice for me.  I did the proceedure to the letter with the addition of shutting off Siri totally.  My results as I could capture them after the proceedure:

    Battery Life Remaining     Useage     Standby

    90%                                45min          1hr, 45min

    80%                               1hr, 13min     2hr, 47min

    70%                               1hr, 41min     3hr, 45min

    60%                               2hr, 8 min      4hr, 13min

    50%                               2hr, 43min     4hr ,58min

40% went by to fast to catch

    30%                               3hr, 30min      6hr, 6min

    20%                               3hr, 56min     7hr, 23min

    10%                               4hr, 12min     7hr, 52min

    1%                                 4hr, 26min     8hr, 30min

One of the biggest things I noticed was how MASSIVLY exagerated/inaccurate the "usage" time is.  During this entire test period the backlight was on and the phone was in use for no more than 1 hour.  Its almost like if i checked the battery percentage in automatically tacked 10min onto the useage even if it was only used for a second or two.

The reason I started this whole test to quantify the issue was because i had the phone on my niightstand the other night 100% charged and "linked"to my M-cell (no weak signal searching going on here).  Did not touch phone and 10hr later I picked up the phone and it had 17% battery life left.  This is so enraging.
