Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

This was the best case for me. And like I said that is with everything turned off. No location services on, Suri off, all notifications off, no email being pushed, the screen brightness turned lower than the 50%. I'm not ******** to *****. I'm just trying to see if I can get something more out of this phone. I have had a android for almost 3 years prior to this iPhone. On average I'm only getting 5 hrs of usage and about 19 hrs of stand by. To me this is unacceptable considering this phone and the issues that have been noted with it. I don't think people are just whining and moaning for the heck of it. To me if I have to turn everything off just to get this phone to work for a day that *****. And I do not have the ability to just plug my phone in due to my job. And I don't think I should have to.

I'm not getting even half of what your getting for battery life on your iphone.  I posted my results a few days ago after trying this procedure.

I am getting about 4.5 hours of useage and 8.5 hours of standby on a full charge. And I am not sure how iOS calculates it bt that useage number is totally inflated.

I have tried this reset approach a couple of times. The best result I have seen was 7 hrs usage and about 25 standby. Does not seem like very good numbers since I have everything turned off. And I do mean everything. The only difference between this and my iPod is a can make Phone calls. I have read several replies of people updating to 9a406 version due to an issue with the SIM card. I am on Sprint and to my knowledge there is no need for a SIM card on there network. Does anyone know if there would be an issue with just removing my card since its not needed. I'm up for anything right now. As long as it involves not taking the phone to the Apple store so I can be there for 3 hrs and not get anything resolved.

jrez... 7 hrs of usage combined with 25 hrs of standby is good and well within specification.  apple official specification is the following:

    • Talk time: Up to 8 hours on 3G, up to 14 hours on 2G (GSM)
    • Standby time: Up to 200 hours
    • Internet use: Up to 6 hours on 3G, up to 9 hours on Wi-Fi
    • Video playback: Up to 10 hours
    • Audio playback: Up to 40 hours

note that those are independent maximums which means you will get 200 hrs "or" 6 hrs of 3G data usage not both, etc. so, according to spec and asumming you had an even mix of 3G/Wi-Fi data usage i get the following:

for standby, 25/200 -> 12.5% standby usage.  for 3G/Wi-Fi (i.e. 7.5 hr average), 7/7.5 -> 93.3% data usage.  12.5 + 93.3 = 105.8%.  that suggest that you ~ got 5.8% better than the official specification which is very good.  sure all these are estimates, but that is still very good.

Please help!  My iPhone 3GS heats up and the battery drains real fast.  What should I do?

Follow my steps below and in the exact order as specified... good luck!

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

2 a. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

2 b. If you do not get the complete new setup screen with language setup and setup as new phone or restore from iTune/iCloud backup, be sure to go back to #1 and reset all settings again (it should happen the second time)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd (settings -> location services -> system services)

    4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!

Ok my final test is as follow :

    Usage : 6 Hours

    Standby : 2 Days , 6 Hours

And i still have 4% Battery remaining!

I think that is 13% better than the official specification which is good

What do you think davidch ?

hey!Davidch -  cheers mate! I'd given up hope - and to be honest was a bit cynical about the drain and reset theory = tried it and my battery is still sitting at over 80% - off charge for 8hours - vast difference! very pleased if it stays that way....now - just the weak wifi to deal to - new antenna on the way but may wait for mext OS upgrade first! Got any more magic for that one David??

bladester... cheers . glad it worked out so well for you!  no "magic" to improve wifi, but in my experience iphones are typically very good with wifi (strong signals and staying connected).  have you tried any other wifi routers to be sure the current one is not the issue.  also, phyically moving closer to it can help a lot

    Hi

I just recently did the steps on my new iphone 4s also. My battery life seems to be average but my caller ID have stopped working after settings reset. All my contacts are still there but calls coming in or recent calls, there is no name just number.

How can I fix this? I'm on Verizon.

    Thanks

this is a common problem wth verizon... dial *228 and then option 1. wait until it finishes. then close the phone and message app (double tap home button, hold an icon until the  red circle shows and tap each app to close). after a minute or so try it.

    attaax,

after setting up the iPhone as a completely new phone (no transfer of previous backups, etc), a "reset-all settings" is probably not necessary, but certainly won't hurt either (you will just go back though those basic new user steps, but no added data will be deleted).  either way, you still want to calibrate the battery to the software and, accordingly, will need to fully discharge and fully recharge.  again, steps #1 and #2 are probably redudant in your situtation, but certainly won't hurt.  you still want to follow steps #3, #4 and #5 with you new iPhone 4S.

    good luck
