Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

Just got my phone a couple days ago, it came installed with 5.0.1 (9A405 not 9A406), says it already has latest software so i cant get 9A406 but never mind that for now. Since turning it on iv been writing down the time and current battery % to try and work out how my battery is but even with all the stats and numbers i cant figure out whether its good or not, there are simply too many variables. It is currently at 1% after its first full charge with Usage: 5hrs 53mins & Standby: 1day 3hrs. Can anyone please tell me if this is good, bad or average? Sry for the lame question but i just need to know, its driving me crazy.

edit: my usage was mainly browsing the app store, testing games & watching a few vids

    davidch,

i have a couple of questions:

Yesterday (1-6-2012) i charged my battery to 100% after it completely died (phone turned off). I used it for texting and voxer (walkie talkie app) until the battery was fully charged. I didnt use it the whole time but on and off. Well, when i took it off the charger, it was off it for about an hr i think, could have been less, and it started to drop.

photo(3).PNG this is what my battery made it to today (1-7-2012). Is that normal?

I usually let my phone standby for 3-4 hrs after it fully charges but this time i did not.

    photo(4).PNG

This is what i usually get out of my battery when i let it fully charge and dont use it for a couple of hours. if I use it right off the charger the battery seems to not last as long. Again, is that normal?

This was a mixture of wifi and 3G. mostly wifi until my router stop working. then it was all 3G usage.

    chabboogie...

according to your first graphic (6.13hrs usage, 20 hrs standby)... according to spec assuming you data was 50/50 wifi/3g.  for standby 20/200 -> 10% standby usage; for data 6.13/7.5 -> 82%.  so 100 - (10+82) = 8% expected remaining.  since you reported only 3%, you are about 5% shy of spec.  however, that is till close considering all the estimation and would still consider it fairly normal (maybe slightly low).

according to you second graphic (9.17 usage, 26 hrs standby)... according to spec assuming your data was again 50/50 wifi/3g. for standby 26/200 -> 13% standby usage; for data 9.17/7.5 -> 122%. so 100 - (13+122) = -35% which suggest you are 35% better than spec if you were at 0% remaining.  since you are reporting 5% at that point.  it suggest 40% better than spec.  again, if your 3g/wifi were even this is extremely good and well beyond spec.

in sum, it appears that your recent report is rather normal while your previous one was abnormally good.  not sure why the amount of time before actually using after charging would matter, but will look into it.

his data usage is less than yours... remember standby can theoretically last 200 hrs when there is no other usage.  3G only data usage is limited to 6 hrs total battery life, wifi only data usage is limited to 9 hrs total battery life.

that means that standby life is ~33 times 3G data usage or ~22 times wifi data usage on average...

Also guys just to mention Apples spec is UP TO each of the areas. So for example Standby is Up to 200 hrs not necessarly guaranteed 200hrs.  They also state "All battery claims depend on network configurations and many other factors; actual results will vary."  So if you are close to this you are actually fine. Below is for reference to give you an idea on what to expect for Maximum spec stated use:

    • Talk time: Up to 8 hours on 3G, (100%/8hr = 12.5% per hr) Up to 14 hours on 2G (100%/14hr = 7.14% per hr)
    • Standby time: Up to 200 hours (100%/200hr = 0.5% per hr)
    • Internet use: Up to 6 hours on 3G, (100%/6hr = 16.6% per hr) Up to 9 hours on Wi-Fi (100%/9hr = 11.1% per hr)
    • Video playback: Up to 10 hours (100%/10hr = 10% per hr)
    • Audio playback: Up to 40 hours (100%/40hr = 2.5% per hr)

    Davidch,

I followed your instructions, and i'm not gonna lie, i was surprised when it worked, I did a full recharge, went to sleep, and when i woke up the battery was still on 98% (nearly 9 hours later, not bad)

However, i did my first recharge after the procedure(i only charge when the battery is below 20%), its been 3 hours now, and the battery is already down to 92%, with very light use.

    Any thoughts?

    Davidch,

After following your instructions for the reset I cannot load the App Store.  It says 'loading' and nothing happens then eventually pops back to the main page.  Any suggestions?

    Thanks

**Nevermind... I shut off phone and then turned it back on and App Store loaded fine.  In the process of draining battery to recharge.  I so hope this works!

My percentage right now is 99%. I've had it standby for 16 minutes and usage is 25 min. Is this right? Btw I intensely switched back and from this to iMessage and settiings.

Anyone else have issue with battery at ~96% after a full night charge?

I charged overnight from 2% and this morning the battery icon shows full but only showing 96%?

    Thanks in advance

Yeah thats pretty normal. It actually most likely gets to 100% sometime during the night but by morning it drops back to 96-97%. Some say its due to the charge shutting down and not kicking back in until like 94% or so.

If you are not seeing this, i mean you never get to 100% at all, you may need to perform the battery calibration process to get it straight.

Also some say could be the same deal as posted here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1909
