Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

Excellent news! I hope it continues. I would let it stay a while as it is to verify all is well wit the device. Then you can add back some apps you really need (I would download from the device your previous purchases of the ones you need) and avoid any you really dont have to have. And do maybe 1 at a time if you can. Of course each app is going to want to use notification and locations so turn that off for ones you dont need  as well and it should help. Good luck with it. Sounds great so far!

Well so far so good.  I have 1 hr 15 mins of standby and 15 mins of usage time, all on WiFi and it is still at 100%.  Hopefully this continues!  I'll post again with what happened over night.

As of right now, the usage time is 1 hour 6 minutes and the Standby time is 12 hours 9 minutes, with the battery at 89%!  This is a monumental improvement!  The apps actually auto-installed once iTunes was done reformatting my phone, so I did not have control over that, but it seems to have all worked out.  I will give it a few cycles before I really celebrate, but for now this is great.

After the software update I did the reset, drained the battery until my phone turned off and then a full charge.  Up until last week I was getting about 23 hours standby and 6 hours of usage.  I thought that wasn't bad.  All of a sudden this week my battery is draining 1-2% just sitting on my desk.  I once again did the reset, restored as new phone, turned off most location settings, etc.  Yesterday I fully charged my phone, made a 10 minute phone call and was on facebook and twitter for about 10 minutes and my phone was down to 87% after that.  I don't know if it's just a problem with my phone but up until last week I was pretty good.  Could it be an app and if so how do I find out?  I do close my apps too.  I am a first time iphone/smartphone user so I am not really sure what is normal.

I followed your instructions, and i'm not gonna lie, i was surprised when it worked, I did a full recharge, went to sleep, and when i woke up the battery was still on 98% (nearly 9 hours later, not bad)

However, i did my first recharge after the procedure(i only charge when the battery is below 20%), its been 3 hours now, and the battery is already down to 92%, with very light use.

    Any thoughts?

not sure... recommend running it out all the way and check usage and standy then

After following your instructions for the reset I cannot load the App Store.  It says 'loading' and nothing happens then eventually pops back to the main page.  Any suggestions?

    Thanks

**Nevermind... I shut off phone and then turned it back on and App Store loaded fine.  In the process of draining battery to recharge.  I so hope this works!

good luck and let us know how it turns out...

    Hello Davidch,

First of all I would really like to appreciate your commendable work on this forum. I got this IP4S last week and have been having battery issues since then, as everybody else on this thread. I have followed all your instructions step by step and have got this battery life. Below are a few screenshots for your observations --

    IMG_0012.PNG

    IMG_0014.PNG

Is this Battery Life Good or Bad ? BTW - I have switched off WiFi and Location Services including System Services like Location Aids, Traffic and Timezone. All this has been after a full charge yesterday. Is this something to worry about ? Should I go knocking the Apple Stores' doors for such kind of battery life ? I am frustrated by this. Never expected this from Apple at all :-( Please let me know your thoughts.

    Thanks in advance.

if you have switch off wifi, you will default to 3G.  wifi gets 50% better usage than 3G on avg (i.e. 9 hrs max vs 6 hrs max).  it is best to use wifi, if it is available for data usage.  according to spec and assuming you were using 3G for data usage on the last graphic.  11.18/200 -> 5.6% standy usage, 3.18/6 -> 53% data usage.  100-(5.6+53)=41%.  your phone is saying 27% which is 14.4% less than expectation.  i would try to run through my steps one more time.  also, you may want to delete your mail accounts and recreate them on the phone.  sometimes a corruption mail message/account can cause extra drain. good luck

Hi Thanks for the tip, sbailey4.

I let the battery completely drain and recharged for like 6 hours and that seems to have fixed the problem.

Now I'm having a new problem.

After doing a reset as directed by davidch, I find that when opening my Settings->General(to check usage) often crash. Like maybe 1 in 10 times, it would crash.

    Anyone have experienced this?

PS. Is there not a search within this topic function on this forum? I can't flip through all 60 pages, lol.

    Thanks

have not heard of any reports of crashing while checking usage.  you willl need to contact apple about a thread seach function...

check out sbailey's app suggestions for velixar a serveral post back.  also, mail account can also create an issue if they get a corrupt mail/account continually trying to connect, etc.  just deleting the mail accounts and recreating them can solve that in most instances.  also per sbaily post a few pages back..

below is for reference to give you an idea on what to expect for maximum spec stated use:

    • Talk time: Up to 8 hours on 3G, (100%/8hr = 12.5% per hr) Up to 14 hours on 2G (100%/14hr = 7.14% per hr)
    • Standby time: Up to 200 hours (100%/200hr = 0.5% per hr)
    • Internet use: Up to 6 hours on 3G, (100%/6hr = 16.6% per hr) Up to 9 hours on Wi-Fi (100%/9hr = 11.1% per hr)
    • Video playback: Up to 10 hours (100%/10hr = 10% per hr)
    • Audio playback: Up to 40 hours (100%/40hr = 2.5% per hr)

    good luck

Never mind that one....usage: 5 hours and 40 minutes.       Standby: 16 hours and 49 minutes.

Percentage left is 1%. Thanks in advance.

    Hi davidch,

Thanks for your reply. Here is the statistic for today. I will try doing the reset again today and will let you know.

    Battery Percentage - 17%

    Usage - 3 Hours, 40 Minutes

    Standby - 11 Hours, 59 Minutes

Is this still something to worry about ? Please let me know, else I can go to the Apple Store. Also I did observe one thing today that after about 30-35 mins of 3G Usage, the phone was getting hotter just below the Apple Logo at the back. This is making me nervous day by day, didn't expect this from my first ever Apple purchase :-(

Please let me know your thoughts.

    Thanks.
