Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

Thanks for your help. I did another reset and I deleted the emoticon app which I got last week and it's a bit soon to say, but after a full charge this morning I have

    Usage - 1 hour, 9 minutes (accurate)

    Standby - 4 hours, 15 minutes (accurate)

    Battery - 85%

MUCH BETTER than the past few days.  Not sure what was going on with that App but evidently something.

There is a built in emotion icon keyboard  if thats what you were wanting. Go to settings>general>keyboard>international keyboards> and add the Emoji.

Thanks. Didn't realize this. My son had told me to buy the other one since he had it on his iPad.

I still see other people getting 2 days of standby but mine is definitely better. I did a few resets like in previous posts on this thread. Restored as new phone, turned off most location services, Bluetooth off and it's been better. Good luck.

not sure... recommend running it out all the way and check usage and standy then

    Hi, davidch.

I just did that, recharged to full 100% and went to bed, just got up and the batery was already at 92%, the readings are:

    Usage: 30 minutes

    Stand by: 8 hours

I didn't use the phone at all, that usage is normal or is it an app/setting running on the background?

No Problem. Plus its 1 less app taking up space and possible causing battery and performance issues. Oh and save the buck for something else!

    Hi davidch,

Thanks for your reply. Here is the statistic for today. I will try doing the reset again today and will let you know.

    Battery Percentage - 17%

    Usage - 3 Hours, 40 Minutes

    Standby - 11 Hours, 59 Minutes

Is this still something to worry about ? Please let me know, else I can go to the Apple Store. Also I did observe one thing today that after about 30-35 mins of 3G Usage, the phone was getting hotter just below the Apple Logo at the back. This is making me nervous day by day, didn't expect this from my first ever Apple purchase :-(

Please let me know your thoughts.

    Thanks.

per spec and assuming that your data usage was 50/50 wifi/3g, 12/200 -> 6% standby usage, 3.67/7.5 -> 49% data usage.  100 - (6+49) = 45%  @17% you would be 28% below spec.  if we assume you data was all 3g, 3.67/6 -> 61%.  100 - (6+61) = 33%  @17% you would be 16% below spec.  seems you may have some other issue (rogue app, mail, etc) or a real hardware issue causing excessive drain.  you could try my process one more time, but if you don't see better results, i would recommend taking it in to be reviewed by apple.

Never mind that one....usage: 5 hours and 40 minutes.       Standby: 16 hours and 49 minutes.

Percentage left is 1%. Thanks in advance.

per spec and assuming even wifi/3g data usage.  16.82/200 -> 8.41% standby usage, 5.67/7.5 -> 76% data usage. 100 - (8.41+76) = 15.59%.  so @1%, you are 14.6% under spec.  if we change data usage to 3g only, your data usage would be 5.67/6 -> 94.5%.  100 - (8.41+94.5) = -2.91.  @1%, you would be ~4% better than spec.  so depending on your mix data usage (3g or wifi), you could be slightly below or easiy in spec.

Wow! Thanks. The whole time I was on 3G. So does this mean that the strategy you produced, works differently on different phones?

My 4s worked great from the day it  ame out until ~ 2 weeks ago when it updated to 5.0.1 and then i was having battery drain like crazy.  I went to the apple store and was given the run around and was told some app was failing to completely close.   I tried Davidch recommendations and saw a little Improvement but nothing like before.  I went back to apple store again and the genius I met with really tried to help and ran diagnostics. He showed me how my usage and standby time we almost identical. He said it was likely one of two apps failing to close properly so I left each one open for 1 day each and left no apps open for a day ... Saw no difference in usage and standby times.  Went back to apple store (good thing it is 1 block from work) and this time they took the phone in back and ran additional diagnostics and found a corruption in the system files.  We had to run a complete reinstall and a new setup to restore phone back to original state.  Pain to reinstall all apps and move then around again as well as resetting all settings I had changed.  Using the cloud and Microsoft exchange made reinstalling everything else ok.

    Phone is working great again.

Davidnc thanks for your help... All your posts really helped me figure things out and made me push apple store to fix my phone and not just blame it on apps not closing.

I am curious to see how soon 5.0.2 comes out...

no... the process would be the same to fix the standby issue.  however, general drain will be different depending on how it is used (data wifi, data 3g, talk, audio, video, standby, etc).  this is all stated in the specfication on the iPhone 4S product page here: http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html .  most specifically this section:

    Power and Battery5

    • Built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery
    • Charging via USB to computer system or power adapter
    • Talk time: Up to 8 hours on 3G, up to 14 hours on 2G (GSM)
    • Standby time: Up to 200 hours
    • Internet use: Up to 6 hours on 3G, up to 9 hours on Wi-Fi
    • Video playback: Up to 10 hours
    • Audio playback: Up to 40 hours

good news is... if you used your phone only on 3g, it is performing better than specification
