Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

For anyone new to the thread be sure to go through these steps to address the battery after updating to iOS 5.0.1:

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

2 a. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

2 b. If you do not get the complete new setup screen with language setup and setup as new phone or restore from iTune/iCloud backup, be sure to go back to #1 and reset all settings again (it should happen the second time)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd (settings -> location services -> system services)

    4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!

    hey everyone...

just want to say YOUR WELCOME to all your thanks and kind words over the last few months... i am trying to monitor this and a couple of the other related threads to try to help out so be patient with me if don't get back to you right away... i also have a wife and kids .   i don't work for apple but am very familiar with their products and many competing products in the phone and computing industry.  i do work in the mobile computing business and have long background in mechancial engineering, system programming and system support and i will do what i can to help.  i started the thread primarily because many of the other threads on the apple support forum became too much of a "complain session" and would like to keep this one from becoming that, so let's please do what we can to stay positive.  i have looked at the problem fairly hard and tried several different tests and my recommended process and settings seem to work in most cases.  just follow carefully everything step by step in the first few posts and detail process above and i am fairly confident now it will resolve the issue for most users with the standby drain issue.  if it doesn't, i recommend taking it to an apple store or authorized provider for further review.

Just wanted to give an update.  I finally needed to charge my phone this afternoon.  Final stats were ~7 hrs 47 mins of usage time and 2 days 20 hours of standby time.  Please do keep in mind though that I never use 3G besides turning it on once a day to see if anyone sent me a photo message and I only turn on wifi when I need it then turn it back off immediately.  Currently my phone is still sitting at 100% charge with 2 hours of standby time.  For anyone having battery issues, if you are not attached to the data that is currently on your phone or can back up your pics/contacts/etc I would highly recommend doing a complete factory restore via iTunes, as it worked wonders for me.

    Hi,

I'm now trying the reset all settings trick. I've done the reset and I'm draining the battery like you said.

Just wanted to let you know I got my 4s just before Christmas and the battery has been terrible from day 1. I've been having a standby drain of around 10% per hour. Done a factory reset and set up as new phone. It didn't help, actually I think it got worse after that. I have also been having so called phantom usage which usually is about half of the standby time even if I do not touch my phone all day.

If the reset thing doesn't help the phone goes back to apple :(

I still have my old 3 gs so maybe I have to wait for iPhone 5.

Sorry about my english it's not my native language.

Well its been one month now since my last reset. Below are my results. 12hours where spent on 3G while at work and in low signal areas(about1hr) airplane mode was used, which saved alot. I browse news sites, read articles for a hour, listen to music for a hour or two and made some calls totaling 30mins. How does this compare to apple specs davidch? Thanks for your help!

and a TIP for users who use SKPE..don't leave it signed in! it drain battery in stand by, it even does this on Android as well. Skype really needs to fix that. I think most folks here use Skype to some extend.

Thanks to davidch and this thread.

This is my 3rd full charge and it has been getting better each time.

Mostly on Wifi, all 3G when not.

I read news, play games and browse the web mostly.

chabogie... what is weird about that? it is showing 99% after well over 2hrs standby which is exactly the spec of 0.5% per hour

per spec and assuming you data usage was 50/50 wifi/3g.  31/200 -> 15.5% standby usage, 6.15/7.5 -> 82%. 100 - (82+15.5) = 97.5%.  that shows you should have 2.5% left on estimate.  even though you only have 1% that is really close and would consider it within spec.

    Hi Davidch,

I have now done the reset all settings and battery usage in standby has gone down some (from almost 10 % to about 4%). It still is much worse than my old 3gs. The phantom usage also is still there.

As an example: 8 hours of standby and 4 hours of usage without me barely touching the phone. Do you have any suggestions or should I send it back to the store?

Also: something strange happened, after I fully discharged and recharged the battery my phone would not accept the sim pin code, there was no message of it being wrong and simply nothing happened it was stuck. I had to turn it off and then on again before it worked.

Just wanted to mention, everything else works. :)(

Be patient guys. As of now I have installed ios 5.1 beta 3 and I am getting results I couldn't imagine that was possible on smartphones. I installed it and then did davidch method. And after the first decharge and overnight charging it is like this.

    Settings for this are

    - 3G off (there is a new button for iPhone 4S users in beta 3 where you can shut off 3G and stay on EDGE)

    - raise to speak off

    - system location only traffic everything else off

    - diagnostics off

    - iCloud push

    - 3 gmail email on fetch every hour

    - auto brightness and set on 20% now

    - wifi constantly on

    - BT is off

    IMG_0040.PNG

So I have around 20% each day with some light/moderate usage.

Thanks! you've been great!! I'm just excited I don't have to worry about battery life during the day and overnight like my Android friends.
