Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

    Hi,

in my earlier post I forgot to mention the usage and standby percentage is per hour. I am also including a screenshot which shows the correct standby time while usage time is shown as much higher, in reality I used the phone no more than 15 minutes. I believe it is this "phantom usage" which eats the battery. Anybody else having this problem and what to do about it?

Some insight would be much appreciated.

Have not done the math but at a glance that looks pretty good. As for the phantom usage, typically that is an app (maybe older one not optimized for iOS5) or just bad programming or corrupt file on an app, or lots of folks trace it back to email accts.  One other thing that comes to mind is iCloud. I had the usage /stdby being equal one day and battery seemed to be in runnaway mode. I noticed I had an iCloud box wanting to enter the password again. Once i did so the phantom usage stopped. I only have iCloud on for backups and find my phone. Not sure why the password and gotten forgotten.  Anyway look for those things. Email accts seem to be pretty common and deleting and adding them back helps sometimes.

    Hi davidch,

Below are the latest stats :-

    -----------------------------------

    Time : 11.27

    Usage : 1 Hour, 6 Minutes

    Standby : 2 Hours, 48 Minutes

    Battery : 76%

    Time : 12:45

    Usage : 1 Hour, 43 Minutes

    Standby : 4 Hours, 6 Minutes

    Battery : 64%

    Time : 13:35

    Usage : 2 Hours, 1 Minute

    Standby : 4 Hours, 56 Minutes

    Battery : 59%

    Time : 17:19

    Usage : 3 Hours, 2 Minutes

    Standby : 8 Hours, 40 Minutes

    Battery : 39%

    -----------------------------------

I did a reset and followed your instructions and reconfigured the email again.

After doing all this I also went to the Apple store as I was becoming a bit unpatient by now. The Genius Bar guy did a diagnostic on his handheld device by going to a URL containing a string pattern *iosdiag* and checked the status of my phone. As per his information his results showed that the battery health was normal and the temperature of the phone was also normal. So, he suggested me to do the recalibration of the battery  a couple of more times and he said that the battery will take its time to build upto full strength after a series of subsequent charges (not recalibration), so he suggested me to observe for 2 more weeks and then come back.

What are your thoughts? How much truth did he tell me OR was it just a typical "sales talk". After reading all the battery statictics above what do you think, do I still have a problem in the hardware or is it still some rogue app ? Are there any other form of diagnostics I should ask them to do apart from this basic diagnostic ?

Please let me know your response....

    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for you reply,

when I do the math the result is a little over 4% battery usage an hour (remember I used the phone no more than 15 min). This will give me a standby time of roughly 24-25 hours. Nowhere near "up to 200 hours".

Thanks for your tip about email. I will try that.

Also want to mention I don`t use Icloud but I do have a MobileMe account set up.

I don't think that resetting is working with my iPhone. I had performed the same instruction yesterday  given by u but the problem remained same after performing the reset all setting. Now I have used

    3 hours 29mins used

    10 hrs 23 mins standby &

    34% battery remain

I felt quite better than before but vast difference with my previous iPhone 4. Plz Can u help me out in this matter?? I have changed my iPhone twice with apple but problem exists the same.

    Thank you!!!

after performing the "reset-all-settings", did you drain the battery completely (til you you get the spinning icon and it shuts off) and then recharge the battery completely (preferably overnight)?  to fix the standby drain issue, you need to perform all 3 steps and in that order.

Yes bro!! I drained until the wheel wipe and shut off. I plugged it to the charger to overnight. morning I wake up and saw the battery was 91% my be due to unplugged after its full charge. Now I have 28% of battery life where I used for 4hrs& 8 mins in standby of 10 hrs 44 mins. I had charged again when I saw 91%. In that period I had done video call on Skype for not more than hour, checked email& fb updates and now surfing in apple site.

Shall I again reset or look for more days to get the battery strength? Please help me out!!

    Thank u

Hi, after applying your steps my battery life time improved with approx. 70%.

Instead of 3h use and 7h standby, I'm now on 5h use and 13h standby (11% remaining). I think this is normal because I use Tomtom without charger for 1h30 (incl. traffic information), e-mail, surfing the web via 3G/Edge and some phone calls. Thanks for the TIP !

From what I experienced is that any usage time above 5h is normal. Depending on what the usage is, this will be more or less around 5.

The thing is so have the usage time as actual usage time and no phantom usage. And that is the hardest part here. If we reduced the phantom usage automaticly it will result in more standby time. And with david it's fix it deletes whatever that was wrong in the first place that caused the phone to work overtime. Now with the 5.1 beta 3 I think they tackled it thoroughly.

    Hi,

just wanted to update on my own post. I took my phone (iphone 4s) back to the store. They will perform some tests on it to determine if there is anything wrong with the hardware.

I did this after talking to my carrier about high battery drainage and the "phantom usage" which was consistently about half of standby time even if I didn`t touch the phone. They asked me to check if the sim programs are working and they were not. They told me this was a known hardware issue with some iphone 4s. Apparently the connection between sim card and sim card reader is not working as it should and this could lead to both phantom usage and battery drain.

Well just wanted to let you know, this might be a problem for others as well. If interested I can update when I get the results.

(In the meantime I am using an old iphone 3gs and it gives me at least double the standby time   )

    Uses 45mins

    Standby 1 hour 25minutes

    Batt per 91% remaining.

    Is this okay or not???

ok... if we assume that your data usage is evenly split between wifi/3g per spec, 1.42/200 -> 0.71 % battery usage, .75/7.5 -> 10%.  100- (.71+10) = 89.29% which suggest that you battery is ~2% better than spec

Hi everyone, I do not know if this has been posted before, but I found something that dramatically boosted my battery life.

A little back story: my phone would only last about 8-12 hours under moderate usage. I would lose around 30% overnight if I wasn't plugged in. I would also put my phone on airplane mode from 7:30am-11:30am, and again at 1pm-4pm. I would have to charge 2-3 times a day, each time running down below 10%. I didn't notice any phantom usage though, maybe a little. My usage time seemed about right though. My screen brightness is also almost completely down.

Anyway, on to the fix: All I did was reset my network settings.

    Setting/General/Reset/Reset Network Settings

I unplugged last night around 9:30. I checked this morning to see I was at 93%, and I had used it in the middle of the night to check texts a couple of times. I did not put my phone on airplane mode today at work, and I didn't use it until around 11:40. I was still at 87%! I then used it to text over the next hour, and I streamed a podcast for about 20 mins. Went back to work, leaving airplane mode off. When I got off, I was around the mid 60's%. I streamed podcasts for another 1&1/2 hours and texted during that time. You can see my usage stats in the picture below: BTW - I was also sending pictures.

    photo.PNG

As you can see, alot of my usage time was spent streaming audio (all but about 30 minutes was on 3g).

I don't know if this will help everyone, but I hope it helps someone. I'm sure if I wasn't streaming the audio, I would still be around 60%! I will give an update with my normal moderate usage (ie. text, light calling, picture message, check email, light amount of games, and airplane mode.)

    Hi Guys,

This is my first iPhone being an android fan boy . Used a HTC Desire up until a month ago. As you all know, the android phones only draw back was you needed to carry your phone along with its charger even during the day.

Till now, I am enjoying the iphone experience. I should say I never really had an issue with a 12-14 hrs standby coming from Android, but then reading Davidch's procedure I thought I might as well give that a shot.

The difference is night and day. 5.0.1 after reset is like giving the iphone battery a shot of adrenalin.

I am still running 30 hrs standby ( 1 day 6 Hrs ) with 5 % left. I am really really happy that I found this thread. Thanks a lot David.
