I can't type after a break insert!

Whenever I make section/page/column breaks, it doesn't let me type on that page anymore.(It moves everything after it to the next page) Why?

Hello TehSmellOfPurple,

(don't you want to correct this: "T"<->"e" hSmellOfPurple or is that something for insider knowledge? 😉

For page breaks the following rules are counting:
To insert something on the same page where the page break is, you have to set the text cursor before the page break marker and insert it there. To see this marker, make the invisibles visible (menu: "View/Show Invisibles"). Now you see a blue line followed by a blue icon that shows you: here is a break. You can insert all you want before that icon, but all after that is only possible on the next page.

Column breaks are a bit tricky (like Brie Fly wrote before):
If you have only one coulmn on the page, it works like a page breaks. But if you have more columns on a page, the break works only in the column with the column break.

The section break:
The section break is for splitting a document "logically" in sections. Since documents consists of pages, it is the normal behaviour to split the document between the end of one and the beginning of the following page.

For all this breaks the rule of the first explanation counts: insert something before this breaks, not behind it.

Frank.

If you insert a column break, the next column will take on the layout characteristics of the previous column setup, including number, gutter, width and, most importantly of all, the before and after settings.

I haven't had much luck using the after settings, everything pretty much just drools down the page, but for the before settings...

Well, say you have a column which has a 'before' setting of two inches, leaving a nice empty avante garde white spaceabove it. If that column or series of columns extends down the page full of boring incredibly interesting text and whatnot, and it stretches down to a half inch of the bottom of page, adding a column break will push the starting of the next column to the next page.

Inserting a layout break will do the same thing. The following column will take on the characteristics of the preceding column until you change it in the layout inspector.

Purple,

(Is that salutation okay?)

You want to use the Layout Break (Insert/Layout Break) to allow you to keep typing on the same page.

The previous parameters will carry over, so if e.g you are using three columns then you are free to change to your now desired settings.
